Losing weight - how aware are Indians about it?

Goddesses should not look like marilyn monroe either.

no one would like slim and trim Goddesses.

Goddesses normally look healthy[ north indian word for a little buxom].have not you seen tamil actresses playing Goddesses in films. How thin and trim they are?

I know many ladies overdoing the exercise bit by repeatedly going to gym. but they become irregular and start blowing up again .

also these gyms are expensive propositions.

how many middle class can go to gym. regularly?

if they maintain themselves even regularly walking or jogging[ I meet many youngsters on morning walk doing jogging with music to keep them company]

simply sweeping, cleaning and some gardening that should keep most fit.

more than anything it is regularity that matters .

also reducing intake helps a lot.

for ladies to be motivated , self motivation is difficult.

it requires a man to motivate them by admiration.. I have yet to meet a lady complimenting another for looking trim and nice.lol

Yes it is true, Krish ji! One need not go crazy with gym membership to lose weight. If we ladies simply resort to the routine women 100 yrs ago did - such as cleaning the floors, washing vessels, doing the laundry, fetching water from the wells all through the day, I am sure we do not need gym at all. However, modern day woman has to work outside for the most part of the day and thus employs servants - out here, everything is automated and you are so exhausted at the end of the day to do chores that demand hard labour. Until my project was on till the middle of last year, I had no time even to cook and thus did not take gym seriously. But now I am home and have free time, and having been so used to automated methods for washing dishes, laundry, etc, I cannot think of doing them manually, hence taking to the gym. To me, whereas I would spend hours doing daily chores (if I chose to) at home, within a short 45 min - 1 hr a day, the workout at the gym helps me shape up! Hence the gym platform! :)

Thanks,

Dear Renuka,

Thanks for the tip regarding the Green tea. Will remember that.

Avocado - never tried it raw! But they make this preparation called 'Guacamole' with it in Mexican restaurants and serve it with say, burritos - tastes great! I heard that Avocados are dense in fat but as you say, rich in heart-healthy fats.

I serve lots of cashews and almonds for my daily naivedyam to gods and take a handful of them following the prayer. Hope they are as good as the rest of the nuts... somewhere I read all nuts are good.

Would love to hear your recipe for protein bars.

Thanks,

I make my own Guacamole..BTW you can also blend Avocado with milk and some berries..its make a perfect smoothie.

Ok here is the recipe for my home made protein bars;

5 table spoons sugar free crunchy peanuts butter

1 cup rolled oats

6 scoops soya powder or whey powder(read the label..some whey powders come with artificial sweeteners ..dont use that)

1 teaspoon vanilla flavor

2 tablespoons chia seeds

Chopped walnuts and slivered almonds..raisins..be liberal with amount.

water

Milk(low fat)

Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl and mox

add peanut butter and mix

add water and vanilla and milk

mix well until thick dough forms.

scoop out and fill in small plastic containers and freeze it.

Eat it the next day.

It melts very fast when taken out of freezer.

tastes great.

If you are a working lady{ I mean a career lady], definitely you may not have time for house work nor for elaborate exercise .

money for gym equipment and such aids for weight control may not be a big issue.

also kitchens with many aids reduces the manual work part of it . so the need for exercise. with gym .

I was talking of housewives with time on their hands with only one earning member , sometimes retired also.

how many ladies over 50 years one gets to see in gyms.[public] or at home having a work out to exercise their muscles.

gyms as an option for exercising is a recent phenomenon promoted by career ladies.

the older generation is neither weight nor figure conscious.

I had recently gone to a function at a friends place . A lady who was head of the household did not receive the guests for half an hour -reason she coolly informed that she

does not miss her daily workouts.she was over 50 years. normally they say they are doing their pooja as the reason .thats how times have changed, lol

Dear Krish ji,

A new family has moved in near by my home.

There is an elderly traditional old Indian woman with all white hair placed neatly in a bun and she must be around 70 years old.

Today morning I saw here wearing a loose top with the local traditional malay sarong and she was wearing sports shoes and brisk walking real fast around the area.

So an exercise granny!

in anna univ campus [guindy college] , boys young and old would queue up to see some lady professor in pants and sport shoes [mostly in late forties and early fifties

jogging .in IIT delhi it was the swimming pool where the boys would wake up early to go and ogle at foreign educated lady prof in swimsuit with immaculate figure .she

used remind all of a whale [

she had been nicknamed whale by the boys].

it was a novelty as such sights not common in india some 35 years back.lol

Dear Krish ji,

I was a consultant for a long time. Now I finished my previous project and sitting at home... not sure if I intend to work again. (I have my own problems). Henceforth I will have plenty of time for housework/gym/TamilBrahmins... ha ha. Maybe I should take to your advice on housework.

You should drop into 3fatchicks.com/forum, Phentermine.com, etc, and listen to the conversations -- those who near 50's (or even above it) are plenty in number attending Zumba (a kind of dance) classes, and sweating through their way in a workout -- really admirable. They say the older women get, their bones lose Calcium and they are easily prone to the Osteo form of Arthritis, and their bones are so weak they fracture easily. Exercises such as walking/Zumba/jogging strengthen the bones too... I somehow admire these ladies.

I have been overweight for the last 5 yrs or so, and only now I decided to take gym seriously and do something for myself, because just like what Renuka ji says, I do not wish to look like a 'balloon' blown out of proportions!

But, all that said, I do not like what your 50+ yr old lady guest told you... it sounds really silly she can't miss a single workout session for attending to her invitees at a function! This is called 'obsession'. :)

Thanks,

Dear Renuka,

The protein bar recipe sounds great. Will try that. My little daughter (aged 10) is into protein bars too, maybe she will also like it.

Thanks,

JR,

Dont give kids protein bars..the high protein content with low carbs is not good for a kids kidney function.

Oh really! Thank goodness, I have not given her my protein bars yet. The ones she has and takes them to school for snack-time are ones especially formulated for children. Thanks for letting me know this.

Pl read this before you start experimenting with food & put your health @ risk!!

NewAge Diet - Disasters.

In short what most people don’t tell you or don’t know :

1. The “great mahanubava” who advocated to eat mostly fruits & veggies died of heart disease & heart attack !

2. The “great mahanubava” who said drink more water so that it cleans the toxins etc… died prematurely of “water disease”

3. Low carb diet leads to sudden death dia cardiac arrest

4. High protein diet will damage the kidneys

5. Green tea supposed to be a elixir of life (LOL) leads to liver damage. US FDA has banned all advertisements talking about green tea benefits !!

6. Drinking fruit Juice every day leads to High Blood pressure & diabetes – UK Medical Authorities have already issued a warning NOT to drink fruit juice every day…

7. Obesity Paradox – Pl google & read this. Those who are fat do not die fast, they may suffer from diseases, but you will generally never hear anyone obese dying early in life !

8. Why it is dangerous to be thin ? – Please google & read how very thin people die suddenly due to cardiac arrest !!

Lastly, not eating ghee can lead to early arthritis - local common wisdom !!

So, please DO NOT change our ancestor diet in the name of health, looking good etc…

http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/521286/Drinking-fruit-juice-daily-increases-risk-heart-disease

Researchers havefound that those who regularly enjoy the popular breakfast drink havesignificantly higher blood pressure than those who only have it occasionally.
Scientists foundpeople who had a daily glass of juice had significantly higher central bloodpressure. This is pressure in the aorta, the large artery into which the heart pumpsoxygen-rich blood to spread around the body.
High centralblood pressure can increase the risk of problems such as a heart attack orangina.
Lead author ofthe study, Dr Matthew Pase, from the Swinburne University of Technology inHawthorn, Victoria, in Australia, said: “The findings suggest the daily use offruit juice may increase central blood pressures, which are known to beassociated with cardiovascular disease risk and cognitive impairment – problemswith mental functioning.

Why Your Orange Juice Is Slowly Killing You (And The TruthAbout Vitamin C)

jaykayji has put out a lot of scare stories. why do people always look at negative side of everything . it is just a mindset

talking of depiction of Gods as thin and trim, artist Ravi varma s depiction of various Godesses are mostly excellent and the Goddesses are are lean and pretty .

Most framed photos of these Goddesses are mostly ravi varmas in most homes.

ketan mehtas film on ravivarma starring nandana sen [playing his model for Goddess] is getting released shortly in india.

Krish - LOL !!. you can easily remove all the scare stories by disproving my points by showing "facts" to the contrary :) yes, it is that simple.. Many people (discarding our ancient wisdom very condescendingly.. lol) in the west were drinking fruit juice everyday thinking they are becoming super healthy till facts emerged to the contrary & stopped this mass suicide - LOL !!!!!

Half knowledge is very very dangerous - another gem from our ancients - LOL !!

Be it half-knowledge or full knowledge, it is important to create awareness about obesity and to fight against it! I do not subscribe to the view that 'eating our food' the ancients lived without diseases for a long, long time. Without dishwasher, laundromat, vacuum cleaner, specialized sanitation and water facilities, etc, our ancients lived and worked in a very different manner from us who belong to the electronic age! So one cannot argue that inventions of today, except for a few, are all wrong. Maybe taking too much green tea as stressed in this thread (in my post) is wrong, but walking/jogging/swimming, etc, are all good and that is the point of this thread - to discuss what could and would work and also to discuss what to avoid. There is no point in discouraging the awareness to lose weight!

JRji
Do you know green tea leaves prices have crashed in india ?

last year it was 13Rs a kilo . Small tea growers are getting only 6Rs instead of 18rs they were expecting. All of them are making losses .

tamilnadu traders are buying in bulk.

Tamilnadu people can drink tea instead of coffee.

Modern appliances do make living comfortable

So alternate ways to lose weight and discussions are not out of place

Creating awareness is the first step to adopt and implement.

Let us get back renukaji and her wise posts if it aids a few more people to get weight conscious and loose excess weight

Let us get back renukaji and her wise posts if it aids a few more people to get weight conscious and loose excess weight

I was waiting for Jaykay to finish but since I heard my name being called I ran here.

JR is right..there is no harm motivating ourselves and awareness is important.

Day in and day out I see many Indian woman who gain so much weight till their menses stops and they start growing facial hair and are infertile.

They keep coming to me(GP) to get pills to make them get menses.

Its hard telling them if they lose weight their symptoms will disappear.

They dont want to exercise.

They then drink all sorts of herbal teas to lose weight and lose nothing!

I admire woman like JR ..she is incharge of her well being and health.

She is doing what is best for herself and by her sharing her tips here she is motivating other women too.

About Jaykay..he is the opposite end of the spectrum..he wants to live in the past!LOL

I dont 100% believe everything in the past as the Gospel/Geeta/Quran Truth!

You see in olden days cow dung was applied to the navel of a new born baby which contributed to neonatal tetanus and death of infants.(Cow dung has Tetanus spores)

Just imagine if we still followed these?

So not everything from the past is right and not everything from the present is wrong and vice versa.Moderation is the key.

I was seeing a dance show yesterday(Dil Se Naachein Indiawale) where a young girl aged some 10 who was a contestant was asked which celebrity judge there she liked the best and she said she likes actor Sonu Sood becos he has 6 packs!

She then asked actor Sonu Sood to come on stage and show his 6 packs!LOL

So Jayakay ji..better start working out..6 pack is mandatory!

JR – I am just giving a counter view to the overwhelming opinion that we should lose weight & should not have even a quarter inch of belly fat J !

In earlier generations within the middle class communities, nobody had heard of kids, teenagers, 20, 30s ever dying !! yes, there were very very rare instance of diseases like malaria, TB etc.. but otherwise everyone lived well into their 70s, 80s, 90s, etc..

Today, youngsters are dying at rates that is shocking & most are heart disease related !! so while we can continue to debate that it is due to washing machine, lack of exercise etc… the key factor is that people are not eating well.

They are all dieting to look good etc.. no balanced diet, which is taking a severe toll on the health !!

On the other hand, I see our earlier generations living well into 80s, 90s, many are super fat, some have diabetes, some have knee replacement surgeries etc…despite all this, they are all living…

While youngsters are dropping dead with massive cardiac arrest..

If you read obesity paradox - those who are slightly fat to obese will survive heart attacks & continue to live…. While thin people will just drop dead… the body cannot handle the shock of a heart attack…

So all I am saying is let people choose knowing fully the pros & cons of “changing the diet” & “eating less” etc…

Renuka –

I am not saying one should not be physically active, etc…

who would NOT want to avoid lifestyle diseases if possible, but when I see people taking it to the extreme with terrible results, it is worrying…

that’s why I gave the “cons” of indulging in changing the diet etc..

As a doctor, you have better view of all the pros & cons, so you can choose to change the diet without any major impact.

Unfortunately most people do not have any view of the pros & cons….

Cheers,

LOL !!!. If I can get a 6 pack with "very moderate exercise", then why not ??? But I would not want the 6 pack, if I have to go the gym & workout extensively everyday which can lead to injuries etc... :)

JR – 2 kids in the USA drank 2 gallons of water &went to the soccer field. They both collapsed & died !!

So why did these 2 Kids do this? Coz all the people are shouting on top of thevoice to drink more & more water, it is supposed to be healthy, it issupposed to remove toxins, help lose weight etc…

And some fools even went to the extent of opening “watertherapy clinic”…

So one can either learn by trial & error which iswhat the west is doing OR one can be smart & learn from our ancients !!
