New York: The Maha Kumbh Mela, considered the largest public gathering in the world, will be the subject of a case study at Harvard University, which will study the logistics and economics behind it and the ‘pop-up mega-city’ that comes to life in Allahabad during the religious event.
A team of faculty and students from Harvard's Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS), School of Design, Harvard Business School, School of Public Health, Harvard Medical School, Harvard Divinity School and Harvard Global Health Institute would travel to Allahabad for the project 'Mapping India's Kumbh Mela'.
They would undertake different researches at the Maha Kumbh, which draws millions of pilgrims from across the world every 12 years.
Harvard said a temporary ‘pop-up mega-city’ is created for the Kumbh Mela that would house pilgrims and tourists for the over month-long duration of the religious gathering. "This city, laid out on a grid, is constructed and deconstructed within a matter of weeks," it said.
Creating this huge encampment entails multiple aspects of contemporary urbanism, including city planning and management, engineering and spatial zoning, an electricity grid, water lines and sanitation systems, food and water distribution plans, hospitals and vaccination centres, police and fire stations, public gathering spaces, and stages for entertainments and plays, the university said.
"This is probably the first time that Harvard is doing something like this, where we've pulled together ... different disciplines in a way that all faculty and students are going to be together to look at a phenomenon," Associate Director of Harvard's South Asia Institute, Meena Hewett, said in a statement.
The Harvard team would seek answers to the question of 'How on earth is an event of this size possible', city-based writer Logan Plaster, who would be part of the team visiting the Kumbh Mela, said.
"To fully grapple with this question, the scale of the Kumbh needs to be put in perspective."

Prasad Ji, Smt VR

Yes, I am in the midst of it all. I've been here last the two weeks. Smt VR, as I had said before,
this is my 3rd Kumbh - in between there was a trip covering Prayag, Kashi and Gaya in 2007
[ Ardh Kumbh ], but that was specifically for performing oblations to departed souls - wholly ritualistic.

I guess, whatever I write here would have already been put up by the press - both the print and electronic
media. I am sure everyone by now has a fairly good idea of the magnitude and dynamics of such a mass
movement of humans - imagine the scene if the entire population of the UK, Europe and the Middle East were
to suddenly converge on such a small area [geographically] for such a short time and also re-migrate back
to their native lands.

As I mentioned before, whatever the Govt/NGOs/Mutts/Ashrams do will always seem inadequate. Such are the
over-whelming numbers. Every civic amenity, medical facility and every mode of transport is under severe strain.
You are right and I hope that there will never be a need to start a 'blame game'.

The place is full of "Babas and their Black Sheep" - Devious Babas and their Dubious Black Sheep - sometimes
disgusting and at others ridiculous - enough distractions for the fickle minded. The Truth, lies beyond.

Smt VR - thanks for inquiring - past two weeks I have eaten and slept at the same place only twice and I have
lost count of the number of times I've got drenched in the waters. I didn't come here through a Mutt / Ashram /
Religious Body - I am too wild a character to abide by the regimented dictates / norms in a dumb, submissive
manner. I am here to grab whatever alms [ zaqaat / pichai ] the Masters throw at me.

No Mam, Meera is not with me - my daughter is midway through her internship, and my son has migrated, So
she is holding the fort. No Mam, I am not keeping any 'notes' / 'jottings' as such - all etched permanently in memory.

On a personal front, I was useful in rescuing a big fat lady [ she actually couldn't have drowned in such shallow
waters unless she she could have put her head between her knees - oh! she made such a scene, as though she'd
had a near-death experience ].Then there was this little Telugu speaking girl - about 14/15 yrs - lost(!). Presently
lodged in a Stree Seva Mandal - I presumed she was kidnapped from her native Guntur [ I speak Telugu ] to be 'sold'
here - until three days ago, nobody had come to 'claim' the child - I haven't been to that side though I have
been loitering all over - maybe I will check on her tomorrow.

Will try and keep giving updates and thanks Mam, I will be 'safe' - I haven't planned my return - maybe
I'll stay on till Maha Shiva Ratri [ Insha Ganesha] and participate in the Athi Rudra Maha Yagnam
- doing Rudra Parayaman with the Veda Brahamanas.

Regards to the whole TB Family - anybody planning to come this side ? But no assurances that we'll ever
meet here in Prayag during the Kumbh - so easy to get lost!

Any time a personal account is better than a professional writing. I appreciate reading your account. I do not think I will ever make it to any Kumbha mela, so for people like me, please write your detail experiences.

Dear Mr. A.M ji

I am glad M.A.M stayed back to hold the fort. What you describe does not seem to be fit for classy ladies (like her) and classic ladies (oldies like me).

After the hat trick Kumbh Mela, you are planning to attend the next Kumbh mela also.
I am really clean-bowled. If you are wild indeed, are you planning to get tamed by these wilder experiences???

I think Dubious Babas and their devious black sheep would have been more appropriate than the other way round. :)

That fat lady would have never sunk - even if she had tried to. Thanks to the Archimedes principle and the Laws of buoyancy.

Even if she stood heels over head she would not have drowned. She just wanted some fat attention from the others I guess.

I hope the poor girl from Guntur did not suffer any more damage than just being kidnapped. I find Telugu and Malayalee girls charming in different ways.

Hope she gets reunited with her family (unless they themselves have sold her) and lives happily.

I can get lost in a revolving door and you talk of getting lost in a crowd on millions of human beings.

Take care good friend. Eat whatever Maalik decides to give you. :hungry:

Don't catch any infections and come back safe.

Do you really have to stay on till Shiv raatri???

Remember Atma sodhana and saadhana are to be done in solitude and silence by the person.

All these boisterous activities may bring you face to face with realities about human beings but not with the real truth you want to discover by doing all these antics.

Dear Prasad Ji, Smt VR

There is so much to write about - God alone knows whether I can be descriptive enough. I hope that
am not causing any boredom / fatigue in anyone.

The girl from Guntur [ Janaki ] - I went to look her up - she sort of charged towards me, eyes lit up, and
a big smile on her face - "Ayya Garu, Ayya Garu", she called out (!).

She is under the care of a Veena Behn, who looked like an expert in martial arts. I was shocked to learn that
there were more than 20 girls 'found ' [so far] and deposited in her care and that there are atleast 15 such
Stree Seva Mandalsis on this side of Ganga. These are all staffed by multi-lingual, plain-clothes lady cops who look
like they are well trained to handle lathis or even defuse bombs. It's like a fortress inside, had the feeling that
I was being constantly watched on CCTV. I don't know how many of these girls in the right and 'ripe' age
had been sexually abused - I didn't dare ask.

For now, she is safe - appeared to have [been] bathed, fed and clothed [ill-fitting, though].
There is no information from the Police in Guntur, yet and nobody has come forward to 'claim' the girl.
You are correct, I got the same feeling too - she appeared dazed and lost [ probably drugged ] and brought
here to be sold.

I have spoken to a childless couple in Chennai, who are [both] coming here on Wednesday 6th Feb. I am
putting them up in Nattu Kottai Nagarathar Chathiram and hope to commence the legal formalities for
the adoption procedures. There is a lot of excitement in the couple - they had sort of reconciled themselves
because of some gynae complications - Feb 2013 hopefully will see an addition to their family - Insha Ganesha.

Sorry VR Mam, Meera only looks like a 'paavam / appavi' type - she can be as wild a character as me -
sort of Equal & Opposite Reaction. She is actually missing all the fun here. Even in 2007, we were together
only while performing the rituals - rest of the time, she was prett-much by herself, busy doing her own thing.
Except that she once lost her way in Sigra [ a suburb of Benares ], she didn't create any major scene.
Some appearances can be deceptive.

Talking of deception - this place full of fakes - fortune tellers, palmists, astrologers, numerologists pseudo prophets
and as many would have read about Computer Babas, Helicopter Babas, Tarzan Babas - ample
distractions for the fickle minded multitudes.

Thodarum - Prasad Ji, I won't rule out anything -maybe next Ardh Kumbh in 2019, one never knows what
the future holds in store for us. Maybe, we could be striding together barefoot on these very sands,
in all this mess, noise, nuisance with not a care in the world - not even that of contacting an infection.

That explains the magnitude of the crowd and the gathering. :)
yet knowingly you want to be part of it!!! WHY???

I was being constantly watched on CCTV. I don't know how many of these girls in the right and 'ripe' age

Do you mean before they were 'saved' or after - by those lady cops??? Sorry! There is nor ripe age any more. We have reached the 'Age no bar' stage!!! :pout:

Adopting even toddler girls is under tight scrutiny. So adopting a teenager MUST be under tighter scrutiny. We will never know what the foster parents may end up using her for - in case the original parents themselves had made sneaky and shady plans for her !!! :scared:

You two defy the Laws of magnetism!

Like poles are supposed to repel and NOT attract each other! :nono:

Nice to know that despite your deceptive appearances both of you are made-for-each-other adventure-seekers with a devil-may-care attitude.

How many hours did you have to wait to get your turn at the web today???

Dear Smt VR

No, I don't have to wait long hours for a net access anymore - call it jugaad (!) There is dope of a fellow
[Alok] who apparently saw me in waist deep water [ Naabhi Maatra Jale Sthithva ] at sunrise, chanting
Aditya Hridayam, in a pretty secluded place [when I say secluded, I mean with less than 30 people around]. From then on, he somehow got a new-found regard for me and I ended up telling him stories and sub stories from Ramayana & Mahabharatha, late into the night - he is a Haryanvi Khatri and a damn good listener - he owns this browsing centre - actually it's a shop that also doubles up as a Dhaba in the evenings. His wife, sister and Mother help with the cooking/serving/cleaning - lost his Father when was young. This place - "Pawan Communications" is also a registered place with the Security People where proper logs are maintained and checked periodically by the officials on duty. Sure, I pay for the net time, but don't have to wait. He somehow, clears the decks when I land-up here.

True - without knowing the antecedents of the couple, I would've never got involved. I have known the man
- a Chartered Accountant by qualification, since his half-pants days, some 30 years ago and have known her since 1993, when they got married. I would never venture into something like this if I were not sure. Your warning justified, in today's circumstances.

Mam, I said the girls were 'found' and lodged in the Stree Seva Mandali - I don't know whether they were actually
'saved' - maybe just children that got lost in the crowds. I know for sure that they were in a very safe place,
innocence written all over them - I will never know how they got there or whether they were abused/not.

I agree with you - there is no age bar - only commodities used to satisfy male savage lust in some shady
city with shadier menfolk prowling the streets.

I suddenly see a spike in the number of Tamil speaking people - mostly returning from Haridwar/Rishikesh
after Thai Poosam - onward to Kashi and then on to Rameshwaram. Some of them gave me a very odd look.
Sort of makes me feel nice when someone thinks of me as a freak.

Your question WHY - difficult to answer - All my life, I could never figure-out for myself as WHY I had to be at
certain places in the world where no sane person would have dreamed of - even in their nightmares.

Jai Athithya Hrudayam!!!

in the right place and at right time! :)

dear Mr. A. M.ji,

I fail to see the connection in the spike of visiting Tamils,
Thaipoosam, Rishikesh and Haridwar and Rameswaram!

I have seen people who will do anything to get noticed
queer/jeer/stare/ smirk... all are O.K. as long as they get noticed.

Just like the fat lady (who could never ever drown) pretended to drown.

I used to know Adithya Hruthayam and many other suktams bye heart in 1990s. Ever since my guru's guru told the ladies not to chant Vedas and Suktams I stopped and now I am out of practice and out of breath too.

I used to read/ chant for 1 to 1 and half hours everyday. Good old days. Now only old remains the good and the days are missing completely.

Since you have a lot of time at your disposal contemplate and try to find out WHY you are doing WHAT you are doing!!!

You will learn more about yourself too.

In the list of babas ( including tarzan baba) you forgot to add one important baba!

guess who... Ali baba!

Please do take care and keep in touch!

May be we can shift our conversation to the thread Think or Sink
since the starter of this thread (who is very silent) may feel that we have usurped his thread and evicted him out of his own territory.

AMji,
I am vicariously experiencing the mala through your experience.
You are doing great job, saving damsels in distress, and reporting at the same time.
I did not know your this side of life, you seem like leading an eventful life. LOL

Dear All

I didn't have occasion to come this side of river past two days, so didn't visit "Pawan'.

No, Mam, I don't think Prasad Ji will think that we are hijacking his thread, and I am not
sure that I'll sink, if I don't think.

London Swami Ji has put up a post on Naga Sadhus, I will request him and all others to post
Kumbh related material to this thread - so that we can find it all in one place.

Power [ electricity ] rationing on this bank today - I'll catch-up later.

Yay Yem

Dear Prasad Ji, Smt VR

I'll stick to Prasad Ji's thread - I'm no Killadi at the Kumbh and there's enough numbers of people out here
with / without langotis and the cross thread isn't going to hide their nudity - not that they care one bit
about who is taking pictures and for for what purpose.

The couple arriving tomorrow - 06/02/2013 - the excitement growing by the hour. We have a long way
to go before the paper-work and legal formalities are completed.

Yes Mam, the spike in the number of Tamil speaking is still very much there - I met many people from Erode,
Nagapattinam, Srivilliputtur and Theni. Also observable is the increase in the number of people from South East
and Far East - these folk mainly in transit after visiting Gaya & Bodh Gaya, then onward to Nepal [ Kapilavastu ].

I heard that many Hollywood celebrities [ like Richard Gere, Harrison Ford, Madonna and Julia Roberts ] are coming
[or have come and gone] - I didn't see any of them though. I heard too about many Indian political heavy-weights
and cine field big-wigs. I didn't see any. Nor did I see people clamoring for autographs or longing to be phographed
alongside them. It could be that the security machinery was just too good or just that I missed them - I wasn't
particularly looking.

I hope the University study on this phenomenon doesn't turn-out to be a damp squib - I am reminded of the old
story of the six blind men in a dark room, groping an elephant - they were all right in their descriptions and yet very
wrong. I see numerous pompous priests and preachers, all seemingly well learned, describing the Almighty
as thus and thus and that the path being prescribed by them as the only path to human salvation .

Got to go now - for Ganga Aarthi. You should see the priests 'lip-sync' to pre-recorded chants played at high
decibel levels. Farcical men in holy robes, going through the mechanical motions and being paid handsomely for it.
Back in TN, any boy in any average TB family would have done better.

Mam, about 'Ali Baba' ....Shhh!.... first guarantee me that you'll not get a fatwa issued against me.

AMji,
You seem to be reporting very objectively.
On spiritual level what is the mood of the mela? or is it just a tamasha?

Dear A.M ji
Forget the fatwa, filth, Ali baba, tarzan baba and nanga Raajaas, Raanis and the crowd!
How did you expect to recognize the bigwigs and leaders without their makeup and
black/ brown/grey cats???
Here is something to relax you and everyone else as well.

[h=1]THE Elephant Rhyme.[/h]
It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind
The First approached the Elephant,
And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl:
“God bless me! but the Elephant
Is very like a wall!”

The Second, feeling of the tusk,
Cried, “Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me ’tis mighty clear
This wonder of an Elephant
Is very like a spear!”

The Third approached the animal,
And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Thus boldly up and spake:
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
Is very like a snake!”

The Fourth reached out an eager hand,
And felt about the knee.
“What most this wondrous beast is like
Is mighty plain,” quoth he;
“ ‘Tis clear enough the Elephant
Is very like a tree!”

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
Said: “E’en the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most;
Deny the fact who can
This marvel of an Elephant
Is very like a fan!”

The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the beast to grope,
Than, seizing on the swinging tail
That fell within his scope,
“I see,” quoth he, “the Elephant
Is very like a rope!”

And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!
The Moral of the Elephant Rhyme:

So oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean,
And prate about an Elephant
Not one of them has seen!!

This rhyme is also known by the name The Blind Men and The Elephant. This was written by the American Poet John Godfrey Saxe (1816-1887).

The moral of the rhyme is that people should not proclaim their views on subjects they know very little about or on things which they have never seen!

The six blind men touch the different pats of the elephant and form their impressions about it. Each one is staunch in his belief and proclaims that only he is right!

The first man says that the elephant is like a wall; the second man says that it is as sharp as a spear; the third man says that it is like a snake; the fourth man says that it is like a tree; the fifth man says that it is like a fan and the sixth man says that it is like a rope!

Each of them was partly correct and yet all of them were totally wrong!

It is better and safer to remain silent on topics we know nothing about and listen to people who have something to say and learn from them!

Visalakshi Ramani

Your post # 15.

No matter how descriptive I can be, it's just one man's observation of such a massive thing. Moreover
professional media people with all their advanced gadgets are already reporting the phenomenon from
different angles. So, my reporting is no big thing and is bound to not make any impact on any one.

Smt VR and you have been kind enough to acknowledge my postings - to others, I guess it is causing
a lot of boredom - they're just being polite and not saying so.

No, Sir Ji, I wouldn't call all of it a big "tamasha" - true there are clowns who have their designate scripts
and roles - but not quite all of it is that way. It is very very easy to get disgusted and walk away. It can also
make one very opinionated and judgemental and that's probably one of the lessons I am learning i.e., atleast
"How Not To Be".

Adding to all this, we had some showers today [ imagine the chaos ], but gone is the stink [ of you know what ].
The couple that arrived today thought of it [the rain] as a 'good omen' - but it looks like the girl will be a major before they get through the laborious procedures and will be a real test of their endurance.

On the one hand, Prasad Ji, Brevity is Clarity - and on the other it would be very rude and impolite on my side if I don't
sign off quickly and give someone else the Net Time - never know what emergencies people may have and their need
get on line.

Yes Mam, every day is eventful and I've been very busy.

I will try to sign in to TB Forum tomorrow, if I come to this side of Ganga.

People may be waiting to read the posts :ranger:

but when it comes to responding to them

most people just slip away like electric eels- :bolt:

with or without giving us an electric shock.

At times I wonder WHAT am I doing in a place (thread)

where I may be invisible, inaudible and non existing!!!

Why SHOULD I enrich it with all my writings and thoughts
when all I am going to get is ice-cold response??? :smow:

Hello Anand Manohar,

I just came to the forum after quite some time.. and I was fascinated by the subject so I started reading every one of the posts.. I am quite fascinated in which you describe the scenes vividly as you see them.. I am so happy that you have continued to do that, regardless of many others not saying anything.. I just think you being there itself is a great experience..

I am happy that Mrs. Visala and Prasad are keeping you company in writing to you back.

I am so happy that you have found a wonderful couple to adopt a sweet teenager.. god bless those parents to be and the child.. My very best to them for all the paper work to be done with ease and promptness.. And hope and pray all the other lost children are united with their loved ones..

You have a wonderful time and know what there is to know and be safe and healthy and i have no clue where you are from but pray for your safe return.. have a spiritual lighted journey to your heart's content.. god bless

Awwww!! Mrs. Visala, hug you back.. thanks.. I just get back aches sitting too long and I also go on other social websites trying to find jobs or trying to catch up with old friends and lately trying to also organize things more efficiently.. you are so sweet to me :-)

Hope all is well with you.. take care, and keep in touch..

Dear Smt Subhalakshmi

[ I wouldn't dare use "Bushu" - somewhere, sometime ago you mentioned that it was name fondly given to you by
your Father ].

Thanks for your encouraging mail - even more so because you share the name with two illustrious relatives
- MS and "Sister" .

Mam, I am from Chennai - and now back there after several stints at various places in the world. Done some wild
and weird things all along and still [ I hope people think ] not lost my mental balance .

Smt VR keeps asking me " WHY " I am here in all this mess, and I don't have an answer. Since she like "Quotes",
maybe I should answer with a quote from A.L Tennyson " Ours not to reason why, ours but to do and die "
- remember the poem, Charge of the Light Brigade? - he was describing a miscalculated battle in the Crimean Wars.
Now, she'll hatch on to the poem, hold me by the collar and ask " What battle, whose miscalculation ?"
And I still will not have any answers.

The rivers here are not navigable right now - water flows controlled with up-stream dams. Discharge from the dams
is maintained to ensure minimum collateral damage down-stream, yet just enough to flush the muck down. This
could be one of the things being studied by the University. So, for the time being no boats plying to places like
Benares. Sure, there are boats from the river banks to the Sangamam - but it is a lot more fun wading in waist-deep water - several safety nets and hold-posts have been installed and there is terrific illumination. Fire Service, Rescue,
First Aid, Para Medical Teams and floating ambulances - all in place and ever vigil.

People will crib about just anything - everything will always seem inadequate / insufficient. But when we consider all
this in the context of such large numbers of humans, one has to concede that The Govt / NGOs / Voluntary Bodies
are doing an excellent job. Security is a major task, with extremists and terrorists looking over our shoulders.

So far, no major 'incident' - but for a few small fires / stove blasts - petty crimes like pick-pocketing / bag lifting /
chain snatching are all there, but these are not exclusive to the Kumbh or Prayag, these happen everywhere where
even a fair number of humans gather.

One of the comedies I saw - "Lost & Found" counters all empty! No, I didn't go there to complain about or retrieve my
wet under-wear which was pinched. I guess " Finders keepers, Losers weepers " . If somebody found something, he/she
is just going to keep it - surely the loser is not going to ask for his used, wet underwear back!

I know, Smt VR is going to ask what all I lost and what all I found - no, I'm not going to tell, especially what
I found, because I don't want to bluff - but assuredly by bag will be as empty as it was when I came here.
Suffice for the moment - I am minus one underwear, a wet one at that!
