'Make in India' campaign a step in right direction: Nooyi

Kolkata, Apr 4 (PTI)
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for 'Make in India' would help boost manufacturing and employment in the country, PepsiCo Chairman and CEO Indra Nooyi said today.

"PM is absolutely right in saying 'Make in India' because ultimately we are trying to build a base in manufacturing and boost employment and that is very good," Nooyi told reporters on the sidelines of IIM Calcutta convocation here today.

About PepsiCo's plan for India, she said, "Almost everything we sell here is made in India. Yesterday, PepsiCo had inaugurated the country's largest beverage plant in Andhra Pradesh.

The basic Economic theory says the three important factors of production are:

1. Land

2. Labour

3. Capital

In India 1 is adequate. 2 is in surplus. 3 is inadequate.

Item 2 has a peculiar time dependent perishability as its unique property. A labourer , if remains unemployed for this hour, his productivity for this hour is lost for ever and it becomes irretrievable.

So make in India becomes important because it enables employment of labour, a factor of production, in the process of production. The overarching golden rule is "Produce or perish".

Our economy has become largely dependent on imports in crucial areas.

Our IT industry is dependent on imported OS, softwares and hardwares. This dependence is dangerous and our leaders are aware of that.

We need large fabs as in China (mainland and Taiwan) and Japan which manufacture chips in large numbers.

All our computers run with chips manufactured in the fabs in China, Korea and Japan, with OS designed in US and Netherland etc., and with softwares written in US and Europe.

While we do have resources who engage in logic gate level designing, they all work for wages. They are not entrepreneurs who sell what they design and produce.

So make in India campaign is only the beginning. There is a long way to go.

Whatever way we look at it encouraging manufacturing will give a much needed impetus to job creation..We require 5 million additional jobs every year...Will lead to Value addition...Exports growth...Saving of precious foreign exchange..Manufacturing will have a multiplier effect on services too..In US for every manufacturing job creates 1.6 jobs in services (I am not aware about the multiple for India)

Recently PM Modi has asked RBI to see the possibility of printing Currency notes in Indian made Paper and Ink.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's to Focus on 'Make in India' During Visit to France

New Delhi: Business will be the focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to France beginning April 10, with emphasis on his Make in India initiative, smart cities and on energy cooperation, the French envoy said today.

Envoy Francois Richier, briefing the media, said the Jaitapur nuclear power plant, where France is to set up six reactors, would also be on the table of talks during Mr Modi's visit.

The talks are also expected to focus on the $20 billion MMRCA (medium multi-role combat aircraft) deal to acquire 126 Rafale fighter jets.

According to media reports, inking of a final deal between Dassault Aviation and Indian authorities on purchase of Rafale jets has got stuck on the issue of pricing and local assembly.

In January 2012, India picked Rafale over strong contender Eurofighter Typhoon for the MMRCA deal, but a final agreement is yet to be clinched.

"Negotiations are on (on Rafale)," the French envoy said.

Mr Richier said the Make in India initiative would be in focus as well as urban development, smart cities and clean energy, which includes solar and civil nuclear energy.

He described France as a "pro-business country".

[h=1]Lapsed tenders hurt Modi's 'Make in India' defence industry push[/h]NEW DELHI: Firms have spurned some $15 billion worth of government tenders to make a range of weapons since 2013, defence ministry officials say, in a blow to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his drive to wean the country off imported arms.

Executives cited unrealistic quality demands from a military short of planes, tanks and guns as a key reason for their reluctance to bid for projects. Complicating things further, the military doesn't want weapons from Indian firms with no track record in defence manufacturing, experts said.

Irked by India's status as the world's biggest arms importer, Modi wants to build an advanced defence industry but almost a year into his "Make in India" campaign, which aims to turn the country into a manufacturing powerhouse, not one large domestic weapons project has been awarded.

Sir,

I agree that we are weak not only in high tech products but also in defence equipments. We have been importing defence equipments from countries like Russia, USA, UK., Israel, Germany, Signatore, etc.

While we are able to send Mangalyan to Mars, we are unable to produce even 'tear gas shells' indigenously is something to think about.

Sir,
You are very quick, LOL.
Even before I research the topic you are two steps ahead.
I agree with you.

A policy brief has been prepared on this by GOI

As per the official estimate of the MoD, India is likely to spend around $130 billion on defence modernisation in the coming seven-to-eight years. While this makes India one of the largest defence markets in the world, the opportunity it offers should be fully exploited for the benefit of local industry. This will not only improve India’s self-reliance in defence production but will have a multiplier effect on the wider economy. The government must ensure that the local industry is geared and incentivised enough to rise up to the expectations and make the government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative a success story.

Vgane,

But the task is daunting. Here is a Reuters report on "make in india" push in defence sector. Of course one can immediately feel a sense of negativity in the report, coming as it is from a bunch of reporters who are not too kind to Modi, But some points are very valid.

Use Indian paper, ink to print currency, Modi tells RBI

1373465609-9388.jpg

Prime Minister Narendra Modi wants the Reserve Bank to use Indian paper and ink to print currency notes and set a target date for achieving the objective as part of the 'Make In India' campaign.

"Today we are celebrating 80 years of RBI. Can we not fix a date...That on any specific date, whatever currency is being printed, paper will be Indian and ink will also be Indian," he said at the 80th anniversary celebrations of the Reserve Bank.

It is ironic that the photograph of Mahatma Gandhi, who fought for swadeshi, appears on currency printed on imported paper, Modi said.

'Make In India', the Prime Minister said, "should start from here. I believe we can do this".

We have re-energised Indian growth engine, says Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks at the opening of the industrial fair in Hanover, Germany on Sunday
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------[h=2]"For us, development is not a mere political agenda; it is an article of faith," he said.[/h]Pledging a stable and transparent tax regime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday wooed global investors, saying development is “not a mere political agenda” but an “article of faith” and sought international support to achieve the objectives crucial for growth.

“We have re-energised the Indian growth engine. The credibility of our economy has been restored. India is once again poised for rapid growth and development,” Mr. Modi said.

“It is the only emerging economy where growth rate is rising. The prospects are even better,” he wrote in an op-ed in the German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.

Mr. Modi said his government has earnestly taken up the challenge of development and economic transformation of India.
“For us, development is not a mere political agenda; it is an article of faith,” he said.

“My government has pledged a stable and transparent tax regime, reducing corporate taxes and implementing a single Goods and Services Tax in 2016,” he said.

Mr. Modi, who along with German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday inaugurated the Hannover Fair in which India is a partner country, said generating jobs for India’s youth is a key to harnessing India’s demographic advantage.

Make in India: Rafale deal may take off as a joint venture between French and Indian firm

Sources familiar with the matter said there were discussions in the govt on whether to press the French firm to sign up an Indian partner and form a JV cos

NEW DELHI: The government could ask France's Dassault Aviation to rope in an Indian partner to jointly manufacture the next batch of its Rafale fighters in the country as a condition for landing the remainder of the contract, a move it hopes will fulfil the 'Make in India' dimension that could not be met in its off-the-shelf purchase of 36 planes last week.

Sources familiar with the matter said there were initial discussions in the government on whether to press the French firm to sign ..
