Marijuana legalised.

Uruguay is the first nation to legalize pot. Uruguay has approved pioneering legislation legalizing marijuana becoming the first nation in the world to legalize production and sale of the drug. After a 12 hour debate , 16 leftist senators out of 29 law-makers voted on Tuesday in favour of the legislation championed by President Jose Mujica, who must now sign it into law. Outside senate hundreds of cannabis smoking activists set off fireworks in what they dubbed "the last march with illegal marijuana". The atmosphere was festive. "The war against drugs has failed" said senator Roberto Conde as he presented the bill calling it an "unavoidable response" to that failure.

The bill authorizes the production, distribution and sale of cannabis, allows individuals to grow their own crop on a small scale and creat consumers clubs. The legislation has caused unease in neighbouring Brazil and Argentina. This bill goes far beyond the measures approved by US states of Colarado and Washington or similar liberal laws of the Netherlands and Spain. Conde said that the law strikes a balance between the individual liberty and public health.

"Legalizing cannabis will diminish the perception of risk and foster consumption, especially among children and adolescents" said senator Alfredo Solari."Neither our Government nor the world should experiment with Uruguayans" he said.

The whole news item somehow looks surreal. But we too have the LGBT legislation on the anvil. What the world has come to!!

Hindu religion has sanctioned the use of Hallucinogens for long. Consumption of Bhang is well known. We do Abhishkam with Bhang to Siva in Kasi Viswanath temple. The prasad is very expensive and difficult to get because of the huge demand. I did it in the Kasi temple last month as part of the performance of EkaDasa Rudrabhishekam. Eleven pundits chanting Rudram eleven times each and Abhihekam,

Bhang is available as Pakodi, various sweet meats and commonly mixed in Khulfi. Bhang Kulfi is fantastic. It is almost compulsory to have a Bhang drink on Holi. The dhoodhwalla bhaiya supplies it.

India is a country with a Hindu religion which defines one set of sadhus by the fact that they all smoke chillum.

USA too will do it sooner or later.

Banning makes ordinary consumers criminals and real criminals make hay. Politicians and law enforcers make a lot from dealers and smugglers. Even the producer farmer gets a pittance.

Yes I agree that Banning creates criminals.
So does robbing, murder and various other crimes.
How do you deal with addiction, and related medical conditions, who pays for the wrong usage? Where is the end?

Solution: Education, teaching dharmic and ethical values, awareness, family and social pressure.

USA had prohibition, now no restrictions. Addiction, overdose and criminal activities are issues whether prohibition is there are not; at least drinkers are not criminals.

For thousands of years bhang, cannabis and local variants were used by some sections of the population. They were not viewed as danger to the society nor consumption was restricted. Now anyone cultivating a poppy plant will be hauled and put in prison.

Now, smoking in public places and quantum of smoking has dropped drastically. Banning tobacco will only create a new set of criminals and a huge black market.

We are talking of individual's right to freedom in talk and act, but made prostitution illegal. Prostitutes are treated worse than untouchables - as per convenience they are are kept in cells overnight, and presented in court and fined. Excepting the girls, everybody else - pimps, agents, police - benefit. If criminality is removed, and pimps are punished, the profession will automatically stabilize to a manageable level.

As part of banishing lahiri vastus, the maharashtra governemnt has banned sale of supari/pakku of rasiklal/crane/triveni brands. What a farce. These are off the open shelves now. May be available with a premium or clandestine sales.

A little bit of introspection on our ancient values and way of living will lead us to a different approach.

Banning and creating more criminals is definitely not the right way.

If you think that will solve the problems, I would like to know where are you getting your weed now, because you are high now.
Your Modi has banned alcohol in his state, and has not made any effort to lift it and nor does he enforce it. Is he going to allow weed?

Dear Prasad,

Your #10:

Your Modi has banned alcohol in his state, and has not made any effort to lift it and nor does he enforce it. Is he going to allow weed?

I have lived in Ahmedabad for 4 years and I know how "no alcohol" is implemented there. It is strictly implemented. Unlike other states Gujaratis do not allow drunken brawls, roadside heroes on a high lying in the gutters, eve teasing with courage fortified with alcohol etc., They are sincere about it. So Modi will never lift prohibition from Gurarat. If he lifts it he will lose Gujarat.

That is another lesson one has to learn from sanatana dharma; loukika rules need not be the same for all; laws defined in smrutis can be modified and adopted to suit kala and desa.

Your smart remark is wasted. namo is not nammamo.

Your Modi has banned alcohol in his state, and has not made any effort to lift it and nor does he enforce it. Is he going to allow weed?

modi is only carrying out a tradition of gujarat. it is gandhi's homestate. there is a moral and traditional issue here. soon after independence most of the states were dry. today guj is the sole holdout.

modi cannot and should not take credit for it. but there is a huge smuggling of liquour to guj. if one desires liquour is available in all quantities and prices.

And rajdeep sardesai wailed that liquor is sold in ahmedabad international airport!

Of course canada has a very humane system re drugs.

"Canada is a producer and exporter of both cannabis and ecstasy, a trend that harsher penalties for those caught has failed to stop.[SUP][9][/SUP]Recently, the idea of drug courts has gained popularity in Canada, numbering in the hundreds. These drug courts attempt to divert those that violate controlled drugs regulations from prisons into treatment programs. The Canadian model is based on the American drug court system, which aimed to reduceprison overcrowding after it was found that up to three-quarters of the prison population growth could be attributed to drug offenders."
