Banish Ego
Thoughts of ‘i’ and ‘mine’ continuously reverberate within us. This is attachment, and from attachment comes possessiveness in thoughts such as “i did this,” or “this belongs to me…” From possessiveness arises the egoistic feeling: “All this is possible because of me...” Such sentiments distance us from our core (soul) and attachment and innumerable egoistic tendencies like acquisitiveness, competitiveness, envy, anger, fear and animosity bombard us. These qualities are depicted as demons in the Devi Mahatmayam.

Empowering us to overcome these demons during Navaratri, the Divine Mother says: “Ask yourself Who am i? Where am i?” These questions will help you to calibrate your own growth. When you find the answers to these questions, you will be able to detach yourself from your ego and attach yourself to your soul.”

In the Devi Mahatmayam, Maa tells Lord Brahma: “Remember, you are not the doer. You are not creating the cosmos. I created you, empowered you and am empowering you to create the cosmos.” When we write, the pen cannot write on its own. It is our energy through words that powers it. Similarly, when we realise that everything we did to reach our present position was powered by our soul energy, our egoistic attachment to these achievements decline.

Shri Devi Mahtmiyam is considered as a holy sacred text by all the Indians and it is
chanted during the Navaratri period without fail. It can also be chanted during the
period of problems or calamities. In some places, Homams are also done propitiating
Goddess Devi to eradicate all the difficulties of the people and bless them peace.
This sacred text is considered equivalent to Vedas and a devotional reading daily
would remove all the difficulties in the family. Shri Devi Mahtmiyam appears in
Markandeya Puranam. Adi Shankara has also emphasized the significance of this great
text.

Namaskaram Sri Balasubramanian and Sri Prasad,

Beautiful posts! Here's some beautiful music for you that is related. It's one of my favorite renditions of the kavacham. The Gundecha brothers are pretty great!
