Modi - giving up Hindi and Hindu extremism

Status
Not open for further replies.
Understanding that he could not make any impact in Delhi with his speeches, Modi seem to have understood the need to go moderate on Hindi and Hindu extremist. In his recent meeting with Christian group, change noticed is a) talking in English and b) going less aggressive on his Hinduism projects. If he reduces Hindi, BJP can definitely make some entry in Tamilnadu.

What you think?

Talking in English is not actually recent and he has been doing that before the Delhi election results itself- may be to be more comfortbale with Obama when he comes here .
As regards the afressive hindutva ,I doubt whether they will give it up and may only temnporarily maintain silence till they taste success in elections in another state only to restrat their aggressive hindutva .

At the celebration, the prime minister said that his government will ensure that there is “complete freedom of faith and that everyone has the undeniable right to retain or adopt the religion of his or her choice without coercion or undue influence”.

He added that no religious group would be allowed to incite hatred against others, overtly or covertly and that his mantra remains development.
While many feel that the speech is a course-correction, the delay in responding to what has been happening across the country could take sheen off his speech considerably and also raise several uncomfortable questions: What prompted Mr Modi to now say what he should have long ago? Is it because of the drubbing that the BJP got in the assembly elections in Delhi? Or is it because Mr Modi has realised that his development agenda is in the danger losing out to the broader divisive social agenda of the right-wing groups?
The Delhi election results is being seen as a trigger for the speech by detractors because it was only after the sixth attack on a church in the city that Mr Modi summoned the Delhi Police commissioner BS Bassi and directed him to take action with regard to the series of attacks on Christian institutions.
However, promises are not enough. Mr Modi will now have to walk the talk: Take strong and visible action against all those disruptive elements in the Sangh who are trying to destabilise the country and systematically attacking the very idea of India.

Promises not enough: PM Modi must walk the talk on religious freedom

when we hear modi talking in english, we wish he talked in hindi.

who would like to hear gujerati english?

Change of language would not endear him to people.

honest implementation of development goals will make a difference.

he should say good bye to RSS programs of communal hatred and ghar vapasi and concentrate on economic

development

I agree with your post.
I do not mind him speaking in Hindi, but it might matter in TN.
I fully agree with your POV that he should concentrate on economics and national agenda like clean Ganga, swatch Bharat etc.

It is not so. There is no strong leader in Tamil Nadu for BJP, and the party is also not interested in grooming a young leader, to take on the Dravidian parties.

Votes that came to BJP in the last Lok Sabha election are for a) Modi's strong leader look (probably one after Indira Gandhi) b) His speech made people admire and c) people fed up with looting after looting or scams after scams by congress. This Delhi defeat must have made him realize he is losing his speech admirers.. so it may be difficult for him to keep quiet again. He has got an excellent mandate from people - he should aim to have some good and big goals and achieve some of them.. what if he closes this Kashmir issue once for all? Probably I need to open that in another thread.. being a very big issue!

.... If he reduces Hindi, BJP can definitely make some entry in Tamilnadu.

What you think?
BJP can never come to power in TN. At the most they can win a seat or 2 and that too if they align with any of the regional parties. It is a pipe dream that BJP would come to power in a fort of Dravidian parties. For that matter no national party can ever come to power in TN. Their coffins have been sealed in TN. Tamilians are too intelligent and wise to fall for religious sentiments. We care two hoots for hindutva. we want only tamiltva, dravidatva.

Yes.... His Hindi speeches are much better.

who would like to hear gujerati english?

Why mock Gujarati English? Tamizh chuvanism at play. So nothing wrong when Shiv sainiks coined the phrase "anda gudu gudu tanda pani" and showed the mirror to the face of the tamizh chuvanists.

Krauthammer: Obama prayer breakfast a ‘combination of the banal and the repulsive’

Obama had no right or reason or logic to drag India in the breakfast meet attended by people of many faiths. It is now realised that the former foreign secretary sujata singh worked hard without govt's knowledge to arrange a meeting between obama and sonia. Sonis is understood to have told his, as a christian she is afraid of conditions prevailing in india. What a blatant untruth; psecs are in the good company of sonia.

****
"On Friday’s broadcast of Hugh Hewitt’s radio program, Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer reacted to remarks made by President Barack Obama at Thursday’s National Prayer Breakfast.

Krauthammer criticized Obama primarily for invoking the Inquisition and the Crusades on the heels of the ISIS video showing the burning of a Jordanian pilot.
“I actually think he was doing it, he’ll trot it out when he does the Iran deal, but the more immediate thing was simply to dismiss the barbarism that we saw with the immolation of the Jordanian pilot, and to make everybody believe that this is really nothing out of the ordinary,” Krauthammer said. “I mean, here, and the bad, this is a combination of the banal and the repulsive. The banal is the adolescent who discovers that well, man is fallen, and many religions have abused their faith and used it as a weapon. This is what you discover when you’re 12, or 17, and what you discuss in the Columbia dorm room. He’s now bringing it to the world as a kind of a revelation, and he does it two days after the world is still in shock by the video of the burning alive of the Jordanian pilot as a way of saying hey, what about Joan of Arc? I mean, this is so distasteful.”
“And you know, there’s one thing I didn’t even think about until now,” he continued. “What the hell is he doing bringing India into this? I mean, it’s the first time I’ve heard India drawn into this discussion. Here he is essentially insulting, and it’s because it’s a Hindu country. It’s not Muslim. I mean, he’ll say in the name of Christ. He won’t say in the name of Muhammad and in the name of Allah. He won’t use those words. And then he goes after India, which is probably our strongest, most stable, most remarkable, democratic ally on the planet, considering all the languages and religions that it harbors. It has the second-largest Muslim population on Earth. And yet he goes after it as a way of saying hey, everybody here is at fault. They are not at fault. The Crusades ended 800 years ago. There’s not a big inquisition going on today. Joan of Arc was not yesterday. The Jordanian pilot was two days ago.”

Tolerance has to cut both ways: The hidden message in PM Modi's speech

Modi has clearly enunciated what is RSS hindutva, secularism and tolerance in his speech. He has not said, like manmohan singh, that minorities have the first right to national resources or he dis not sleep when an indian muslim doctor was arrested in australia on terrorism charges. The media is clever to ignore what it finds unpalatable, but sensible indians do understand what modi said.

Modi ensured that hindus and so called minorities enjoyed the same level of freedom and same level of restrictions. For road widening all encroachments temples, prayer halls, mosques were removed, despite violent protests by muslims; hindus as usual did only feeble voice protest. There are many examples to prove this impartiality by modi's gujarat govt.

There are two ways of looking at Narendra Modi’s speech today (17 October) to a Christian congregation in Delhi called to celebrate the elevation to sainthood of Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Mother Euphrasia. One is to see it as a belated reassurance to the minority community that his government will not tolerate what has been loosely described in the media as “attacks on churches”; the other way is to see it as Modi’s challenge to the minorities to also appreciate what India is really about. It’s not just a place to claim rights, but imbibe its ancient heritage of tolerance.

That he made overt attempts to dispel fears among minorities was obvious, given the wild statements made by some elements of the Sangh parivar. It was in this context that he said: “My government will not allow any religious group, belonging to the majority or the minority, to incite hatred against others, overtly or covertly. Mine will be a government that gives equal respect to all religions.” He added: “We cannot accept violence against any religion on any pretext and I strongly condemn such violence. My government will act strongly in this regard.”

Then note another passage where he swears by “every word” of a declaration made at an Inter-Faith conference at The Hague on 10 December 2008, the 60[SUP]th[/SUP] anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. And what did that declaration say? It said, inter alia: “We consider the freedom to have, to retain and to adopt a religion or belief of one's personal choice, without coercion or inducement, to be an undeniable right.”

This is a formulation that even the RSS would accept, with the key words it would look particularly favourably at being “without coercion or inducement.”
This was the context for Modi’s assertion that he would defend freedom of faith. He said: “Speaking for India, and for my government, I declare that my government stands by every word of the above declaration. My government will ensure that there is complete freedom of faith and that everyone has the undeniable right to retain or adopt the religion of his or her choice without coercion or undue influence.” (Read more about the inter-faith declaration here).

The Inter-Faith declaration made no references to the right to convert. But Modi said more.

In what the Lutyens Elite and card-carrying secularists are unwilling to admit, Modi clearly implied that India’s secularism was not the gift of Nehru, the Left- Liberal or even the makers of the constitution; it was, in fact, the other way around: the constitution and secularism was the gift of India’s ancient values of tolerance.

He said: “Our Constitution did not evolve in a vacuum. It has roots in the ancient cultural traditions of India. The principle of equal respect has been a part of India’s ethos for thousands of years and that is how it became integral to the Constitution of India.”

For good measure, he also slipped in Swami Vivekananda, his favourite icon: “The tradition of welcoming, respecting and honouring all faiths is as old as India itself. As Swami Vivekananda said: ‘We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true.’”

This is nothing but a challenge to minority, and exclusivist religions, which asks them to respect the tolerant traditions of India even when they seek their own religious rights.

Just in case someone missed the message, Modi said what Swami Vivekananda said held good not only for the nation, or his government, but “all governments, run by any political party.”

Quoting Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore’s reference to a mind without fear, Modi said it was Tagore’s “heaven of freedom that we are duty-bound to create and preserve. We believe that there is truth in every religion. Ekam Sat Vipra Bahudha vadanti.

Once again, Modi’s quote from the Rig Veda challenged his listeners to accept the reality that the same truth may be told differently by different religions.

There is no reason for any religion to claim superiority over another. Tolerance has to cut both ways.

But that is not quite the way his speech will be interpreted in newspapers tomorrow.

This Is Neither Secular Nor Scientific, Mr PM

Another view of the same, but addressing different issues.

It is now left to hindus to highlight and bring to public discourse all temple attacks, hate messages, hate speeches, and hate images to get the hate mongers punished. Two photos in circulation, one a youngster posing with his shoed feet on a linga in a temples, and a jean clad lady with shoes on sitting astride on a nandi with the temple in the background - such hate mongering or deliberate denigrating of sacred symbols must be discussed and acted upon.

Now for the excerpts from the article, link at the end.

* * *

"When Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi attended an event related to the canonisation of two Indian Catholic ‘saints’ by Vatican, the media was deafeningly silent about the much flaunted scientific temper. . . Clearly this is both anti-science and pseudo-science, more so than the claim of Vedic flying machines.

Given the rampant ‘healing miracle’ convention run by Christian cults throughout India by fly-by-night evangelists targeting vulnerable population, it is really unfortunate that the Prime Minister has attended the canonisation-celebrating event, which is based on institutional anti-science claims.

This sudden discovery of brown-skinned saints by the Vatican is very much similar to Western beauty contests suddenly discovering Miss Worlds and Miss Universes from India when they wanted to create a huge market for their beauty products in India. We can expect more ‘saints’ approved by Rome in the near future.

From the very outset the Church had started a well-designed campaign against Modi government in the international arena. At Sarajevo, on 18 June 2014 Cardinal Cardinal Alencherry delivered a lecture on ‘Non-Violence vs. Fundamentalism in Contemporary India’ in which he talked about RSS as a Hindu fundamentalist group which has watered down its agenda in order to capture power. Yes, the same Cardinal who stood by the Catholic Italian marines against the Catholic Indian fishermen. Soon every stray statement from some loose cannons from the ruling party or totally unrelated fringes like the present-day Hindu Mahasabha (a fringe outfit in no way resembling the older pre-1948 HMS) were blown out of proportion or projected out of context creating a fear psychosis among the minorities. This followed the so-called attacks on the Churches. Even ordinary thefts were turned into hate crimes.

More importantly in South India in March 2007 a Muslim woman was stoned and publicly executed to death in Taliban style. Local Tamilnadu Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam (TMMK) leader demanded that stoning ‘immoral’ women be made part of Indian constitution. Same March 2007 saw CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat and CPI leader D Raja attend a rally by TMMK in the nation’s capital. At that time they were all part of the UPA or supporters of UPA (unlike Hindu Maha Sabha which is in no way related to BJP today).

There were no television debates and no media outrage.
- The number of Hindu temples getting vandalized was ever since on the increase in Kanyakumari district particularly after UPA came to power. No media except the local vernacular evening dailies reported these ‘vandalisms’, some of which were definite Christian hate acts – like the destruction of snake temple at the entrance of a sacred grove by evangelical Christians. In another attack on a temple , the night watchman was murdered by the assailants. . . However the national media and of course the paid-media merchants preferred to look the other way.

The Prime Minister has done well to counter it with a statement against all violence and hate propaganda. It is high time Hindus too start meticulous documentation of evangelical hate crimes and hate propaganda against Hindus and demand justice. It is high time Hindus bring these hate crimes of evangelism which is happening throughout India as a phenomenon rather than as isolated events into the focus of the media – and if the mainstream media refuses at least in the social media and thus force the mainstream media to take them up.

Otherwise the casualties will be not only Hinduism but also the scientific spirit of India.

Brahminism was considered alien once, but then people accepted Jayalalitha as their leader. Congress was loved by Tamilnadu and Indira Gandhi has lot of supporters once - but now see the situation they were wiped out all over India. Things may change - but like you I also see BJP as imposer of Hindi. It is good to learn many languages but it should not be thrust upon anyone supressing the local language. I went to Srilanka and the driver that we arranged for our 5 day trip is a Sinhalese and he told about predecessor to Jayawardane made Sinhalese as only mode of communication threatening jobs of Tamils - which created a mess, enemity and unrest for many years. Leaders may come out of the blue to be liked by everyone - whether it is Gandhi, MGR or Modi.

Contrary to what many in the BJP seem to think, secularism is not a policy option for a government, but one of the original principles that inform the Constitution. ‘Secular’, as a word to describe the Indian Republic, might have been added to the Preamble only in 1976, but the freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion under Article 25 is one of the fundamental rights guaranteed in the Constitution. Protecting the right of all persons to freedom of religion is the constitutional duty of the government of the day. Indeed, freedom of religion is integral to any democratic society, and India, by definition, cannot remain a democracy without allowing its citizens the freedom to practise a religion of their choice. A government that cannot ensure the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution equally to all its citizens will quickly lose its political legitimacy and representative character. Certainly, Mr. Modi would not want his government to hurtle down that path.

Secularism is not a policy option - The Hindu

Now people must read and refer tofrom regional media. English media has lost all credibility and respect. The Hindu, TOI, Indian express and the like lie high shamelessly in the title page, and publish retraction on the last page. Shekar gupta, malini p, sardesai are rediculed everyday for their blatant and naked bias for malicious reporting. They are free to hold any opinion, but not publishing facts and events as they happen is a disgrace to their profession.

Actually People must be stupid and not read anything EXCEPT What I say.
(i hope my wife never finds this post, LOL)

That way there will no arguments.
What a grand logic. I am sure there are people who will follow it.

By the way it is a Sarcasm, in response to post#18.

Petition to PM to Ban Foreign Funding of NGOs & Set Up a National Social Service Fund

Swami Dayananda Saraswati, Arsha Vidya Gurukulam is a supporter of this petition to PM: Ford foundation, hillary clinton and countless middle east groups are keen to destroy the social fabric of Bharat, and the 'hindu' way of life. Hope something comes out and the govt takes suitable steps.

Escerpts:

  • Misappropriation of funds, lack of transparency and accountability: A CBI analysis of NGOs across the country showed that of the 22,39,971 NGOs functioning in 20 States, only 10% (about 2,23,428) submitted annual returns. Of 5,684 NGOs in the six Union Territories, only 50 filed their balance sheets. None of the NGOs in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura file returns. (The Hindu, January 6, 2015).
  • Political activism with foreign funds: FCRA rules and regulations specifically forbid the use of foreign funds for undertaking “political activities”. Yet a large proportion of FFNGOs have been indulging in a whole range of political activities, including campaigning for or against certain political parties during elections.
  • Motivated interventions in economic policies: Some leading NGOs have been in the forefront of mobilizing resistance against nationally important development projects (such as in the power sector) allegedly at the behest of foreign agencies causing enormous damage to India’s growth potential.
Endangering geopolitical security of India and proselytizing under the guise of “Development”: Many NGOs claiming to be involved in “human rights”, “social empowerment”, “rural development”, etc., are alleged to be fronts for India-based or foreign-supported extremist political organizations with socially disruptive agendas and have been found lending support to secessionist movements. Some Christian missionary groups, under the guise of “developmental” organizations, also carry out proselytization activities in India that often disrupt social harmony and end up damaging the delicate social fabric of India

It is estimated that “of the 20 lakh registered NGOs and societies in the country, only 30,000 or so (about 1.5%) are actually doing developmental work” (www.outlookindia.com/article/Oh-What-A-Racket/221515). The widely-known Citizens for Justice and Peace is only one among many NGOs that face serious charges of buying personal luxuries out of funds meant for victims or disasters.

***

Ø Appoint an impartial Inquiry Commission: Constitute a high-powered Commission of Inquiry into the functioning and sources of funding of all foreign funded NGOs in India to discover:
1. Whether the provisions of FCRA, including the provision forbidding political activity, are being complied with;
2. The nature of the donor agencies funding NGOs in India and the stated and hidden agendas of those agencies;
3. Evidence of corruption, if any, in the utilisation of foreign funds;
4. Linkages of FFNGOs with secessionist and other antinational outfits, if any;
5. Evidence of hawala transactions, if any;
6. Use of foreign funds for political activities including lobbying and campaigning.

Sir,

By bjp, I did not mean brahminism. again, bjp is not brahminism either. there are guys/blokes from all castes in bjp. many are in bjp only for power and not for principles. indian politics follows no ethics. even dmk aligned with bjp throwing away all ethics saying 'brahmanargalum namakku nanbargale'. was it not the same man who advised his followers to paint on walls all over tn, 'saiva parpan, vainava parpan endru solli tamilan thalaiyai thadava parpan'. the pro-dravidians will stoop to any nadir just to stay in power.

regional interests and regional sentiments reign supreme in tn. only a regional party, precisely dmk or admk will rule for a long time to come unless some unpredictable miracle, which is unlikely, happens.

in case of 'jayalalitha', it was neither the person nor the brahmin caste that was accepted. it was the ex-heroine, the charismatic face, the celebrity status that was accepted.

mere giving up hindi or hindutva will not help.

perhaps starting a regional unit and naming it as 'dravida janata party' or 'tamizhaga janata party' and aligning with the motley crowd of 'ma thi mu ka', 'the ka mu ka', 'ka ka the ka', 'thu ka ma ka' etc will help form a third alternative.
