Alleging that the profits made “through trade of slaughtered animals go into terrorism”, Union Minister for Women and Child Development Maneka Gandhi on Sunday called for a nationwide ban on animal slaughter. Citing a Uttar Pradesh police report to back her statement, she claimed the “issue is no longer political or religious but an economic one”.
“Slaughter of milking animals is a trade of Indians. Money through trade of slaughtered animals goes into terrorism and therefore into killing us. Why are we allowing this?” she said, addressing a three-day international conference on “India For Animals” organised by the Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisations (FIAPO) here on Sunday.
“India is killing more animals than even China. Milking animals are being slaughtered and illegally traded to Bangladesh and the Middle East. It is no longer about religion but money,” she said. She claimed Bangladesh exported one lakh tonnes of beef without rearing or importing any cattle.
Condemning the Maharashtra government’s decision to allow slaughtering of 15,000 oxen annually, Maneka urged the Rajasthan government to watch out for camel slaughtering also. She claimed that recently, during Eid, a large number of camels were taken from Rajasthan to Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Maneka, 300 truckloads of animals are brought to Delhi and slaughtered daily, helped by a nexus of police, traders and politicians.
“Animal activists should make friends with the police and officials in the administration and pursue them to stop illegal movement of animals… There is also need for maintaining close contact with the gaushalas run by various organisations,” she said.
