rishikesan,
to include reservations as a cause of the problem, i think it is not fair. reservations is a social equalization measure, and much as we disagree on that, it has nothing to do with unscrupulous engg colleges and misguided parents who force their children to study engg with a dream of going to the usa and making big dolla.
one thing these private colleges have done, is that quite a few of them are excellent, particularly those around chennai. and has taken the heat of fighting for seats and corruption. just imagine what would have happened with the large number of aspirants, and just about 6 or 7 colleges, as inthe 1960s? all hell would have broken loose, and our community would have been affected the most.
as it stands, all my nephews nieces bar one (who did medicine) did ce/ece/eee and bar one, all are abroad. no one got into the iits even though many of them tried. they are all making big bucks in the usa ausralia singpo and say that the private colleges they went to, was adequate. but then for these upper mid class kids, it was more fun and bunking the classes, than studies.
many of them found mates, but only tambrams - though their circle of friends was eclectic enough to cut castes (not religion i notice), but all of them had a couple of thousand rupees and did not think twice of going to a disco at the whim. and always a car was available, and no one would even think of askingn their friends money for petrol.
the victims are the rural - poor and lower mid class, who do not have the advantage or knowledge of scrutinizing the capabiliitiesof the institutions, and who fell prey to smooth talking salesmen. but that has showed a sharp decline this year. hopefully we will see a few closing of such colleges and only the good ones survive.
waiting for such things to happen in medicine next
btw what happend to accounting? CA? Cost accounting? Company Secretaryship? no one wants those anymore? good money there. also corporate law - only one nephew went to NLS. no other lawyer..good money in law too.
