MUMBAI: RIL move to exit the non-vegetarian food business is in deference to the wishes of a large section of consumers, shareholders and investors who had requested Mukesh Ambani to get out of the meat segment as it hurt their religious sentiments. The non-vegetarian foods business, said to be growing at a CAGR of 25-30%, is estimated to comprise 10% of the company's total retail business and is also a profit-making venture.

Given that Ambani himself is a strict vegetarian, it is a clear sign that business decisions cannot be separated from an individual's dietary and lifestyle choices.

RIL had earlier picked up a 45% equity stake in Two Sisters Foods India (TSFI), which belongs to 2 Sisters Food Group (2SFG). 2SFG, the third largest food company in the UK, supplies poultry, red meat, fish, and bakery and chilled/frozen products to the retail, food service and food manufacturing sectors. RIL was also planning to set up quick service restaurants (QSRs) named 'Chicken came First'.

What a brave trumpet!. The truth is perhaps they were not selling good. Except in pockets the malls are not doing good. Only the NRIs, RGT (resident gloabe trotters) and of course the filmwallahs frequent the malls. Sooner or later the craze may die out. But Ambanis have not said they will not sell the "red spotted" packed items like noodles, cakes, etc. At least here I think India has a mind of its own. Above all the populations of vegetarians and non-vegetarians are trying to equalize at great speed. One knows who were the greatest consumers of "Dalda".

What ever may be the reason hidden or otherwise it is a good decision by Shri Mukesh Ambani.

It is not that easy to say that I will not be involved in non-vegetarian business.
If you are invested in banks you are lending and supporting the meat industry. Similarly if you have Hospitality industry, retail stores, restaurants you are indirectly supporting meat industry.

You can say that you will not be directly involved in meat trade, but it is a dubious distinction.

A friend of mine has Hotels, including Hiltons, he just runs the food service business through his American daughter-in-law's company so he can say he is not involved in meat business, who are you cheating?
