Some funny comments:

"I have 1000 sarees"

"I will call the neighbour to clean my closet. This way when she cleans it, she will be amazed at my sari collection..."

Some hurtful sentiments:

"I the sari I wear is worn by someone higher up in social standing to me, I would like to wear it, if a sweeper wears the same, I would not like to wear it again"...

LOL!

How weird?
But I have noted that many people in India dress up to show to others more than dressing up for themselves.

Many years back when I was at an Ashram in India I was seated next to a few ladies from TN who started to ask many questions and were kind of friendly.

Ok in an Ashram I usually dress in all white sans any jewelry.

So these women asked me where I was from....my job..marital status etc.

Then they asked me why I am not wearing any jewelry and dressed only in white and not wearing colorful clothes and I told them that I am not fond of jewelry and further more I am at an Ashram where I prefer to be dressed in all white cos that makes you feel more relaxed.

Right away those women said...'We can never understand people like you..when you have the money you do not want to flaunt it and dress up with jewelry..we do not have much money but we want to dress up so to show others that we have otherwise people will think we have nothing..dont you feel scared people will not know your real status in life and mistake you for not having anything?"

Then I told them "I think we have come to an Ashram to not think of worldly matters"

This is not the first time I have heard such talk in India..everyone is just scared of what others think and dress up to show others. I wonder what is the need to be over dressed in an Ashram? It is not a wedding!LOL

I had even seen a talk show too on TV some talk show in TN and one person was asked why he works so hard.

His reply was "I want to work hard so that my wife can wear the latest expensive sarees and jewelry and make the neighbours jealous"

I have no idea why making others jealous need to be criteria here.

Cant we just make ourselves happy without the need to make another jealous?

Dear Doc,

Those are nice thoughts from you - it is indeed rare not to be fond of jewellery or dressing up. Kudos to you!

When I was little (went to college in India), I used to be very fond of dressing up - wearing different, different salwar kameez. :) Now I kinda lost much interest in dressing up but I wouldn't say I dislike jewels, I like to have some basic jewellery to suit the occassion. But I am definitely no way near all these 'dress-crazy' women! (Atleast that much I am proud of after watching the show!) :)

Yes, in India, there is too much craze associated with all this. I liked what Ajitha the Lawyer told in the end - one should dress up in a way it does not bother others ("urutthaadha vannam irukka vendum").

On superficial observation, it appears Western society is better. But sometime back for one of the award ceremonies, 2 actresses, one being Anne Hathaway and another actress both chose on the same designer dress. And then it seems Hathaway was kinda bitter about it and changed her dress at the last minute to a different one! I wonder why 2 people cannot wear the same designer gown! I think it becomes a "status issue" for them because Hathaway was winning an award then.

dear JR,

I am very fashion conscious and love to dress up but I do not like jewelry...but it just that I like to wear all white in an Ashram.

In an Ashram I like to be natural..that is wear all white and use flowers as my ornaments.

It gives me a relaxed feel.

But if I am not in an Ashram I love to dress up but I only use lipstick and no other make up.I dislike using Kajal too.

But whatever said and done..I do not like jewelry and I only wear a silver chain with a Silver Sanskrit Aum cos that matches all clothes.

I love shoes too and love high heels when not at work..but I dress up for myself and not to make others jealous.

Dear JR,

You know most dress crazy women do not know how to dress up..the just over dress with garish colored clothes with an overdose of jewelry.

One needs to have a good fashion sense to look good without over doing anything.

Dear Renu,

Not all females are angels! It is rightly said, 'Vanity thy name is woman!' :D

They not only brag about the sarees but also the amount they spent on making the matching blouse!

Just have a look at
Images for blouse designs

Dear RR ji,

I too like to design my own blouse but thats for me...there is no need to brag to others for that.

But anyway I hardly wear sarees..the last time I wore a saree was some 3 years ago!LOL

No reason to wear one..hardly attend functions.

You are absolutely true, doc! :)

Smt JR madam

Many oldies seldom donate their old sarees to needy, ( there are a few who donate, not denying that )
and they go on accumulating sarees with the result, when they finally depart, except a few, most of the sarees are only donated to needy.

I wonder why these women do not develop the habit of donating their used sarees to needy?

(We have been donating sarees, new and old as and when possible to needy, also we have written in our Drop box , how our son and daughter should distribute our used dresses, sarees etc to needy.)

That's really great of you and your wife to do that, PJ ji!

In the above show, one of the women plainly says, "she does not want to give her sarees (that are in many hundreds) to the poor".

I only have about 12 sarees in all, and out of them, 5 are Kanjeevaram sarees. I am planning to donate my pattu sarees to my relatives when I visit India next time.

it is a good idea to donate sarees to those around you -specially the servants and the poor.

the only danger is men are likely to mistake some of them for their wives seeing them in wifes sarees

leading to unintended consequences,lol

Dear Krish Sir,

I donate at least six nice sarees to poor women every year. How does my wardrobe overflow? Because....

Even if I reduce buying new ones, relative circles keep on giving sarees as gifts on special occasions!

BTW, servant maids do DIFFER in shape and size from the 'ejamAni'! So, alert hubbies NEVER make any mistake!

most wives are very smart. they never employ servant maids who look good.

most maid need to look like bashed up state transport buses to be employable.lol

still men can be short sighted sometimes. age also does strange things to old men. they become

deranged sometimes. thats why you have bad experience in buses, public spaces due to

attention by old men.lol

I also do not buy clothes . I have dozens of shirts , T shirts, woollens presented by somebody or

other. I present all dhoties and angavasthrams I get as presents to others since I do not use

them.

My friend had a servant maid having her name! She used to get confused when her mom calls her name!

So, I expect that my maid's name should not be 'Raji'.

I have stopped "donating" old clothes!

I simply put them in the recycle boxes they have at recycle centres and let those recycle organizations do what they want with it.

The reason I stop giving away old clothes is "Giving away old unwanted stuff is NOT charity..charity is giving the needy new stuff..so I buy new stuff when I want to donate or give cash"

In India, Chennai there is no one who collects Sarees and other dresses for recycling purpose.

The only option available is either to donate them to needy ( after a wash) or burn them up!!

Normally cloths used by sick persons are not donated, but only burnt.

Dear Renu,

The poly silk sarees look new even after several washes. Those in need can use it for some more years. So, I don't think it is

wrong to donate used sarees. Some people exchange them for stainless steel / plastic vessels. I think it is a sort of selfishness.
