Negative media portrayal – Why are we silent?

If tami There are several tamil movies where Brahmins are humiliated to the core. It is used by most of the comedians to my knowledge as a laughing matter either verbally or symbolically & now a days subtly shown with a heavier punch. I observed this in many recent movies where santhanam , vivek acted as comedian…like the Mirattal

Reasons could be many –

 1. Few Brahmins (by birth) neither understand nor seek to understand their ancestral way of living. They simply accuse & join the NB club sharing all unknown system of practices pouring fuel to the fire.
 2. It is a shame bcos of a few who are not humane, socialist, secularist or moral individuals etc., but a Brahmin by birth seen extremely visible in this society.
 3. Celebrities (Brahmins) by birth again give up some of the practices for individual benefits without realsing the impact & damage they cause.

I am strongly of the opinion that media is used as a biggest tool to make people feel bad about their religion, sect etc., so that it will pay way for easier conversion in the coming days.

When in a Tamil movie we can appreciate a Sardar JI (Abhiyum Naanum), why don’t tamil movies etc. portray good aspects of the Brahmins or even Hindu’s lifestyle?

I am not sure, if such topics were discussed before. Before it is too late, can we collective do something…the thoughts can be shared in positive ways here & some representatives from ******* or film association can take it appropriately. (I know the recent elections were an attempt but a failure in FISMA etc.,)

Sri. Lakshmi Narasimhan, Greetings.

There are several tamil movies where Brahmins are humiliated to the core. Why do you think brahmin community was humiliated? Why don't you think the cine field is humiliated? truth is, the cine field has no real comedy stuff. Since they have no idea, or run out of what little idea they had, they have to resort to make fun of one vulnerable community in the name of comedy! Even NBs are yawning with this 'sense of humor'. Just learn to ignore them. If the community reacts, then only it becomes comdedy and more and more persons will do it.

Cheers!

The criticism is encouraged by many because there is lack of unity among brahmins. A criticism of this nature will not be tolerated by other communities because there is unity in other communities. It will be more fruitful to think about how to promote better unity among brahmins rather than worry about such meaningless criticism from other quarters.

Don't worry too much of anything..people make fun of each other all the while.

Even in a recent Tamil movie a comedian who was making spitting noises said he was speaking Malaysian language over the phone.

Malay language in fact is a very sweet language which is heavily spiced with Sanskrit words.

In fact sometimes when you go to a page with Romanized Sanskrit words Google Chrome will ask you this "This page is in Malay would you like to translate it ?"

That many Sanskrit words in Malay that Google Chrome identifies Romanized Sanskrit as Malay!
So how on earth can Malay language sound like spitting noises as shown in the movie?

One more movie I remember showed a scene where Malaysian girls of Indian origin in a swimming pool hugging every guy there and one man told the other "these how girls are in Malaysia"

That's not true at all.
Who tell hell will hug guys that they don't know?

So you see Tamil movies do portray any foreign citizen of Indian origin badly too.

Even when I was in India many people I met always had a negative impression of any foreign born and bred Indian.

We are not lesser Indian or Hindu than anyone in India..in fact we do take extra effort to keep in touch with religion and culture.

So it's no big deal I feel what ever is in the movies..nothing is really true, just ignore it.

Exactly Dr.Renuka, u hit the nail on the head. We have also seen that from the earliest movies christians are always portrayed as some chamcha of a Don, or as if drinking and dancing is the only job they do in their entire life... they have ignored these and are moving forward taking it as part of the bollywood tamasha.

Actually if noticed the brahmin bashing done in the movies directed by hindus themselves and not any other caste people. Even balachander used pattu mama , pattu mami in his movies. So it ie better if we ignore and move ahead.

Cheers.

Shri K Balachandar has extremely high regard for the character Pattu Mami and Kittu Mama characters he created in the film "Ethir Neechal". In fact, yesterday night in Jaya TV Program "Thirumbi Parkiren" he talked very high about the characters and also the actress Sowcar Janaki who played the role of Pattu Mami. So certain character like this still in good memory of the people. Some more such names "Prestige Padmanaba Iyer" " Barrister Rajinikant" - all brahmin characters.

Frankly speaking any community really does not to care what others think of them.

It's human nature to only think highly of themselves and try to find fault with others.

A person does not need another person to tell him that he is great.

Greatness speaks for itself.

A lion knows he is King of the jungle and he does not need other animals in the jungle to sing praises of him.

We take the opinions at the face value of only ones who go by values and have nothing to hide. In the case of others it is only what is implied that speaks most eloquently of their intentions. For example, when they praise you it is mostly disingenuous just as when they villify you, an unspoken respect for you is generally implied.

In the long run, does it really matter? One who is intelligent knows not to go by stereotypes. The rest don't really matter....:)

Hi Folk,

In India and in Tamilnadu in particular, it is the brahmins who are opinion makers and pioneers in any field. Others just follow. It would be better if brahmins realise this and keep moving ahead. As long as they live their life without conceit and deceit there will be only good things happening to them.

Cinema is a medium in which they have to convey an idea in a very short span of time in just a few few frames. So every emotion and every idea has to be excessively acted out so that it reaches the audience. If it is pain you have cry and shed tears profusely: if it is love you have to sing and dance and run around trees chasing each other:If it is anger you have to shout; and if it is happiness you have to laugh aloud. So in order to show that the character on the screen is a brahmin, he has to have a funny looking tuft hanging about, he should have either vibhuti or naamam prominently displayed on his forehead like the colonel in the army wears his epaulette on his shoulders, and of course the language has to be 'brahmana baashai'. And he has always to be portrayed as a fool. Every one knows that the brahmin they meet in real life is not at all like that funny character, they enjoy the tom foolery played out on the screen because they have paid for it. It would be better if brahmins realise this and just ignore it with the contempt that it deserves and concentrate on their struggles in life.
