NRIs and the duplicity of life

Honestly, after having lived the American dream, I would love to live a simple, peaceful life by the river side in a small 'divyadesam' or 'kshetra' -- some Sri Rama temple preferably -- in TN! There is no equal to this priceless life -- of living in simplicity, purity, comtemplating on the divine all the time, doing 'thaligai' for the devotees (athithi upachaaram), doing regular bhajans with fellow devotees and so forth. But again, everyone has their own dharma to follow.

This is exactly what people in TN & South are doing if you exclude the “small minority living in the cities who have aped the west & given up everything”. They go to temples every other month, offer prayers by the river side, they take their children along with them. The children also follow the ancient practice of temple visits across B’s & NBs…

So pray tell me, why should the Indians in India leave all this, go to the west, & long for this very life that we are already living today!

if we make a mistake, we should be generous enough to tell our kids, not to make the same mistake. So if the NRIs keep drumming how great their lives are, the young impressionable kids in India will think there is some great life waiting for them in the west !! It is a crime to mislead our next gen kids & see them fall into the same ditch :nono:

So JK, why dont you answer your own question of why TBs are forsaking the simple village life of bathing in the river and visiting the temple and migrating in droves to Mumbai, Dubai, London and San Francisco.

If you are unable, let me answer it for you. Simple reasons: money, power, job prospects and material convenience. Sorry if this is not palatable for you. Now perhaps you are not interested in these things, but most likely you don't speak for everybody else.

Biswa - you are assuming people are migrating in droves from India sitting abroad. Let me tell you sitting in India - The biggest change is that "out" migration from South has dramatically reduced in the last 10 yrs either to Mumbai or to the west or anywhere else. we in India can see this where most of the current gen are working in IT sector in Chennai, Bangalore or Hyderabad. those days of migrating for jobs are long gone.... yes, there is small minority in the cities who are enamored by the west, & hence migrate there.. Cheers,

Yesterday I was reading a conversation of Sri Annamalai Swami , a great devotee of Sri Ramana Maharshi from the book ¨Living by the words of Bhagavan "and this is what he said about people who are frustrated with their current life style and here is his answer :

Before we came into this world all the incidents of our life were predestined: where we have to live, what acts we have to perform, etc. If we desire anything other than our prarabdha, that which was already destined for us, we cannot attain it. ?

All the difficulties that we experience in life have been given to us by Bhagavan in order to turn our minds towards the Self.

So I hope this answer helps you understand why things are the way they are and we have to take the positives of the environment in which we leave the life to the best of our abilities without worrying about things that we have less or no control . It is not that as though all NRIs are living an unfulfilled life and all non NRIs are having a fulfilled life . I have seen miserable people as well as happy people in both NRIs and Non NRIs .

India as a nation has seen a high migration rate in recent years. Over 98 million people migrated from one place to another in 1990s, the highest for any decade since independence according to the 2001 census details. However in 1970s migration was slowing down. The number of migrants during 1991-2001 increased by about 22% over the previous decade an increase since 1951.

The data shows that among people migrating in search of jobs, literates constitute the vast bulk over 10.6 million while illiterate migrants are about 3.3 million. Three out of four job-seeking migrants are educated males. Among literate, migrant job-seekers less than 1% was women. Nearly 40% of literate persons migrating for work had studied up to secondary level and another 32% had studied beyond. Graduates numbered over 1.8 million or about 17% while technical diploma or degree holders constituted about 8%.

of course the illiterate cannot read properly nor understand. my post on migration is very clear - the "out migration" from "South" has significantly reduced in the last 10 yrs, there are many studies on this. with so many from north coming to south seeking for jobs, the overall migration from one place to another will always be high. Most importantly here, we are talking of Indians migrating to the west. common sense is very uncommon specially among illiterates!!

Before the bevakouf :flypig: comes again with meaningless statistics, let me add. "Out migration from South", does NOT include TN to Karnataka, Kerala, AP or vice versa !!. Only migrations from South to North or abroad. LOL !!!

Dear Prasad ji,

I hope you dont mind enlarging the font of the pasted articles..even with reading glasses I find it rather straining for my eyes to read the small prints.

Renu

Though JK is strong in his views about the NRIs there is a lot of truth in them.

The first generation NRIs are just that -Indians. They had the best of both the worlds. The culture and values picked up in this wonderful country with its age old wisdom, its most beautiful languages, its fertile lands, its multiple religious faiths including a strong school of atheistic thoughts, the sunny climate, its unique temples and idol worshiping staunch bhakti etc., have all been internalized by them in their formative years of life. They can never jettison all that. They can have a re-look at it, become critical of it, accept a few of them, harangue and lecture against a few others and try to forget a few others. But they can never wipe it out completely from their consciousness. The children of these NRIs are only namesakes. They have inherited nothing but the blood and genes from their parents. Those children who were carefully sent to India for education after their 5th class might have become again the quintessential Indians, but others who grew up in their country of living have nothing to call themselves Indians except the physical features and the genes.

Coming to the nostalgia-or the missing of Tamilnadu- the first generation may have it if they have a sensitive mind and they may not have it if they are given to wide eyed wondering at the western licentious culture and its trappings. To go out of the country or State of TN, no adventurous spirit is needed. It is not like the Anglo-Saxon British youngster or the Matador- Spaniard who went looking for adventure and thrill in the wild wild west when American continent was discovered by Columbus. They went not to return: they went to fight and die or live: they went looking for wild experiences in the wild west of America, where new railroads were being laid in virgin forests and deserts. Whereas our local TBs went to America after understanding the comforts and opportunities that are there in the societies of Europe and US or Australia. If they had known that they may stop one of the many flying bullets for no fault of them, they would never have ventured out. Similarly those who went to Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta were people (who had nothing to fall back in their villages for a living) who had equipped themselves with a typewriting/shorthand qualification which was a sure passport for an entry level babu's job in those places. There was no thrill or pain. They even had someone from their distant relative's family or from the same village waiting at the Railway station at the destination to carefully receive them and take them home for a temporary stay(later he will move to a "lodge"). The logic was that the poor youngman does not know the local language and may be cheated by the notorious jongawallahs or taximen. Thus they invariably ended up in the TB predominent safe Matungas, Chemburs, Dombivlis, Sions, Dharavis, Lake areas etc., of Bombay, Calcutta etc., Where was the adventure in this? If this is to be called adventure, it is just laughable adventure.

These NRIs as well TBs in other states could have never forgotten TN. They would have suffered nostalgia if they were at a level at which they could be sensitive people. if they were not it is not the loss or fault of the community in TN. "Good riddance" would be the most appropriate and cryptic conclusion to be reached about these worthies..

These worthies can never miss TN because they do not know TN. TN is not an impoverished state. This wrong perception reveals how poorly informed the member is. TN is one of the rich states of India. It is one of those states which do well industrially, education wise, health wise, natural wealth wise, etc.;, etc., TN is far ahead of Delhi in human development index. You do not hear stories of girls getting gangraped every other day. Delhi, but for the National Capital Region, is a huge mess of a slum. Its work culture is horrible with Babus reluctantly going to office in the morning much later than the stipulated time and scurrying home much earlier in the evening. The crowd there is such that you will have more than 60% of the people in any public place-theatre, market, shopping mall or funeral procession-Govt. Babus. The culture is one of over powering laid back laziness coupled with an elephant size babuji ego inside every person. Those who are lucky to stay back in TN making a living here are the luckiest. They work hard in a hostile society (because of the casteist hatred- selling by politiicians) and make a living. They send their brilliant children to US and Europe to become the "First Generation NRI"s. LOL. It is a different matter that these First Generation that went away never send their Second Generation to India for education and upbringing and thus lose their unique inheritance for ever.

We are putting up with it and are coming out with success. We are great survivors. Education in Colleges, jobs etc., are denied to you in Delhi, UP, Andhra, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, MP etc., also on the basis of caste and quota. So what is the big deal? From the distance, your knowledge about the living conditions in TN are far from reality. Even in spite of the quota and palpable envy and hatred, Brahmins still do well. In Tamilnadu you can not ignore brahmins when you speak about Industries and business, sports, art, cinema, middle class, doctors of repute, culture, teachers, academic institutions of repute, leadership in Army etc., You can not forget them even while speaking about the heavy attrition in the street fight that is going on in the IPL and ICC domain. LOL. (there is a never-say- die brahmin, driven to a corner, fighting a spirited battle against heavy odds. LOL).

So krishji, next time when you visit TN, stay back and try to go deep into these issues to understand what is really happening here. And do not jump to advise us. We know better than you. LOL.
VAAGMIJI
you are like me in some ways
I tell NRis and westerners not to advise me staying in delhi.

I know better how to live here.

you feel the same way staying in tamilnadu coping with life there.

even if we spend a few months in some places one may not know the place much. nor be comfortable and would like

to be back in our favorite hole wherever it is.

nothing much has been denied to me or my children in delhi on basis of caste or quota[edu quotas in central univ are very recent, central govt recruitment are the same until recently]

private sector recruitment may be open for brahmins and study easy in private colleges if you have the money in

tamilnadu. In fact my kids got their professional degrees from anna univ. . good medical care cheap is only in

tamiladu.but casteism is worst in tamilnadu . according to bharat matrimony survey only 36 percent girls are

prepared to marry out of caste as against 56 in delhi and 59 percent in kolkatta.

the dravidian parties have nurtured brahmin caste hatred .only bjp can save it it appears in future

I have stayed several months in chennai but not in interiors. I prefer hyderabad -stayed a decade there or

bangalore -five years I feel comfortable in these places

Human beings migrate since dawn of civilization. Almost all humans are never happy all the time where they are.

But complainers which are mostly men are a insecure bunch! The source of the insecurity is described here!

The complaining happens in two ways - one is to glorify how wonderful one has where they are (Chennai is the greatest, or being NRI is the best thing since slice of bread ..).

The other is to say the other guy is suffering - (Point out issues of India all the time or Point out why NRIs must be suffering).

The cure to this insecurity is to learn to accept one's body and accept the place they are living in!

I have strong doubts about this member from the type of posts from this person. It is worth an investigation

no lady would give a link to "here''

A-TBji,
You hit the nail on the head. I was thinking of writing something similar.
This being a TB site articles are going to be about Tamil, Brahmins, Hindus, and India. It is mostly written by Tamils, Hindus and people of Indian origins. If someone criticizes India, it does not mean that he is anti-India, similarly a criticism of TN, does not mean it is anti-TN.

We are mostly adults, why can we not discuss about the issues instead of attacking the messenger. If I say the Adayar river is polluted, people in chennai can agree or disagree, instead of attacking the member. But that has become the norm to curtail discussion.

Well, then why get so worked up about these posts on NRI or for that matter on the western lifestyle, NRI lifestyle or racism etc..??

Indians in India need to know the pros & cons of an NRI lifestyle before they migrate there. if the same NRI’s after settling abroad long for the very life in TN, then why bother to migrate?? Jobs & Money are no longer the issue here given that people are migrating for jobs to TN today.

It is interesting “those who complained including the person who gave the link to “here” – LOL !!” & attacked the poster related to Imbibing Traditions, NRIs, racism, etc.. turn around half way to accuse the others –LOL !!

Also don’t forget to preach your other NRIs not to attack the poster/messenger instead of discussing the issues!

When the whites call the NRIs as bloody Indians, otherdisgusting racist slurs, our great NRIs are not bothered, but they will gang upto fight if we call back whites as “junk whites”!! They don’t even standup to acknowledge the widespread racism in the west! Astonishing slave mentality…

One member is so shocked about my post, she only wants toknow why I changed my opinion as though opinions cannot be changed. Indians in India did not know the extent of racism (everyone thought it existed in pockets) till it exploded on the news media in the last 2 yrs starting with Trayvon Martin & Obama’s reference to it. From then on, it is continuous stream of racist incidents in the media. So anyone will change their opinion, but our NRI’s cannot accept it… & will continue to keep attacking the poster… LOL !!

One member even went to the extent of accusing me of calling NRIs as junk whites, she so desperately wants to be a white, & called as white, etc..!! Some NRIs even openly say, they are whites born in a brown skin – unfortunately the whites born in white skin do not see it that way - LOL !!

This is the true tragedy of the NRI life & the crisis of identity that they go through all their lives… Most NRIs face a life of racism, insults, sidelined in society, career, social functions, restaurants, etc… while this is the unfortunate truth, they will go to any extent to deny this atleast in this forum.. LOL !!

Lets see if the adults in this forum can counter the "content" without attacking the messenger or by foolishly exposing his :crazy::crazy::crazy:own shortcomings by giving a link to "here" – LOL !!
