Though JK is strong in his views about the NRIs there is a lot of truth in them.
The first generation NRIs are just that -Indians. They had the best of both the worlds. The culture and values picked up in this wonderful country with its age old wisdom, its most beautiful languages, its fertile lands, its multiple religious faiths including a strong school of atheistic thoughts, the sunny climate, its unique temples and idol worshiping staunch bhakti etc., have all been internalized by them in their formative years of life. They can never jettison all that. They can have a re-look at it, become critical of it, accept a few of them, harangue and lecture against a few others and try to forget a few others. But they can never wipe it out completely from their consciousness. The children of these NRIs are only namesakes. They have inherited nothing but the blood and genes from their parents. Those children who were carefully sent to India for education after their 5th class might have become again the quintessential Indians, but others who grew up in their country of living have nothing to call themselves Indians except the physical features and the genes.
Coming to the nostalgia-or the missing of Tamilnadu- the first generation may have it if they have a sensitive mind and they may not have it if they are given to wide eyed wondering at the western licentious culture and its trappings. To go out of the country or State of TN, no adventurous spirit is needed. It is not like the Anglo-Saxon British youngster or the Matador- Spaniard who went looking for adventure and thrill in the wild wild west when American continent was discovered by Columbus. They went not to return: they went to fight and die or live: they went looking for wild experiences in the wild west of America, where new railroads were being laid in virgin forests and deserts. Whereas our local TBs went to America after understanding the comforts and opportunities that are there in the societies of Europe and US or Australia. If they had known that they may stop one of the many flying bullets for no fault of them, they would never have ventured out. Similarly those who went to Delhi, Bombay and Calcutta were people (who had nothing to fall back in their villages for a living) who had equipped themselves with a typewriting/shorthand qualification which was a sure passport for an entry level babu's job in those places. There was no thrill or pain. They even had someone from their distant relative's family or from the same village waiting at the Railway station at the destination to carefully receive them and take them home for a temporary stay(later he will move to a "lodge"). The logic was that the poor youngman does not know the local language and may be cheated by the notorious jongawallahs or taximen. Thus they invariably ended up in the TB predominent safe Matungas, Chemburs, Dombivlis, Sions, Dharavis, Lake areas etc., of Bombay, Calcutta etc., Where was the adventure in this? If this is to be called adventure, it is just laughable adventure.
These NRIs as well TBs in other states could have never forgotten TN. They would have suffered nostalgia if they were at a level at which they could be sensitive people. if they were not it is not the loss or fault of the community in TN. "Good riddance" would be the most appropriate and cryptic conclusion to be reached about these worthies..
These worthies can never miss TN because they do not know TN. TN is not an impoverished state. This wrong perception reveals how poorly informed the member is. TN is one of the rich states of India. It is one of those states which do well industrially, education wise, health wise, natural wealth wise, etc.;, etc., TN is far ahead of Delhi in human development index. You do not hear stories of girls getting gangraped every other day. Delhi, but for the National Capital Region, is a huge mess of a slum. Its work culture is horrible with Babus reluctantly going to office in the morning much later than the stipulated time and scurrying home much earlier in the evening. The crowd there is such that you will have more than 60% of the people in any public place-theatre, market, shopping mall or funeral procession-Govt. Babus. The culture is one of over powering laid back laziness coupled with an elephant size babuji ego inside every person. Those who are lucky to stay back in TN making a living here are the luckiest. They work hard in a hostile society (because of the casteist hatred- selling by politiicians) and make a living. They send their brilliant children to US and Europe to become the "First Generation NRI"s. LOL. It is a different matter that these First Generation that went away never send their Second Generation to India for education and upbringing and thus lose their unique inheritance for ever.
We are putting up with it and are coming out with success. We are great survivors. Education in Colleges, jobs etc., are denied to you in Delhi, UP, Andhra, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, MP etc., also on the basis of caste and quota. So what is the big deal? From the distance, your knowledge about the living conditions in TN are far from reality. Even in spite of the quota and palpable envy and hatred, Brahmins still do well. In Tamilnadu you can not ignore brahmins when you speak about Industries and business, sports, art, cinema, middle class, doctors of repute, culture, teachers, academic institutions of repute, leadership in Army etc., You can not forget them even while speaking about the heavy attrition in the street fight that is going on in the IPL and ICC domain. LOL. (there is a never-say- die brahmin, driven to a corner, fighting a spirited battle against heavy odds. LOL).
So krishji, next time when you visit TN, stay back and try to go deep into these issues to understand what is really happening here. And do not jump to advise us. We know better than you. LOL.
