Oommen Chandy’s sagging spirits get a Supreme Court boost, state liquor policy upheld

SC upholds Kerala Government’s liquor policy

In bad news for bar owners in Kerala, now only 27 bars in five star hotels will be allowed to sell liquor in the state, other than at state-owned liquor outlets.

A Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Vikramjith Sen and Justice Sivakeerthy Singh has dismissed the Kerala Bar owners’ plea challenging the Kerala High Court order allowing only 5 star hotels to operate bars in the state.

The petitioners had challenged the same citing the government’s biased attitude allowing only 5 star hotels to run bars. The SC has said that the 730 bars that were closed down by the government need not be re-opened.

The Apex Court has also upheld the policy which did not allow four and three star hotels to operate bars. Kerala government had told the court that the policy was made to curb alcoholism and protect the state’s tourism interests.

This has put him in a very difficult situation and cost him one of his ministers. Allegation mills are still working overtime and the fire caused is yet to be doused. This decision may come handy for the CM. It will be interesting to see how he uses it against the opposition CPM which runs a witch hunt.

More than 300 local bars will have to shut down their business because of the State Government’s policy of allowing sale of liquor only at five star hotel bars.

With the result, for this ensuing New Year, Keralites will have to celebrate the event with booze party either at a five star hotel bar or at their homes.

They could celebrate the booze party even at street corners and aloof public places, after bribing the local police.

Will that not amounts to committing two offences at a time especially at the dawn of a New Year!!

One,by bribing the local police and the other violating the existing law of the land by hosting the booze party at street corner.

Hope such parties ends smoothly without any drunken brawl.

Availability of liquor is not a problem in Kerala and interior places in Kanyakumari district.
Whether prohibition is there or not, people won't care. In villages many have the home made liquor.
In many petty shops they sell it discreetly.

Hope fully, the bar owners will come out with new innovative idea. This ban may not last long. It is too big of an industry and almost all political parties are linked to it in one way or the other. just wait and see...

I remember Shri Sangom saying that drinking after a hard days toil in Kerala is not a taboo...I guess this prohibition is more to ensnare women voters!

In interior Kerala and KK district in tamilnadu, in rubber estates labourers start their work by 4.00 am and finish by 8.00 am.
Then again they go to work in nearby banana gardens / paddy fields / some other place by 9.30am and work upto 4.30 pm.

Actually they earn double wages by doing double work in a day.

For that hard work, they need a booze to have a sound sleep to keep themselves fit for the next day.
One thing, I have not witnessed much of a street fights / drunken brawls.

VB Sir

Alcoholism [ just like prostitution ] will not go away by legislation - it will only go underground.

I guess, it's Kerala's turn to try it out.

"Cheers"
Yay Yem

A M Ji,

While I agree partly, I wish to point out that in order to enforce prohibition in the State of Kerala aka ‘ Gods own country’ he is closing bars and has banned issue of new bar license.

He has announced that his Government is well prepared to forego the income generated through sale of liquor.

And there is also awareness campaign going on all over the State against liquor and its ill effects.

It is indeed a laudable move by Oommen Chandy whose Government has proved to have enough guts to face the trails and tribulation in its policy of prohibition enforcement in a phased manner.

We accomplish in proportion to the attempts we make.

And the proverb is 'If there is a will, there is a way'. :-)

In Kerala, prohibition is not declared.Only bars are closed but the trading outlets are intact.
Of course, it is only a beginning and not the end.
It is only one step forward but the destination is far ahead.

Kerala Governments new liquor policy is to enforce prohibition in a phased manner in 10 years.

And this new liquor policy was framed after a scientific study by a one-man commission on consumption of liquor in the State.

The first step towards enforcement of prohibition is restriction on consumption of alcohol and hence closure of bars.

The Government should be given free hand to enforce its policies as some of them are based on the welfare of its citizen.

this govt will be thrown out before the next step hopefully.

populism and playing to women sentiments is the first step to downfall.

Other wiser states will stand on the sidelines and watch the fun in kerala

There is no limit for one's imagination and dreams especially people who suffer with a dazed stupor mind.

Seasoned politicians are very seriously doing home work with arithmetic on policies, alliances and gimmicks to retain power.

Only immature political analysts do write out of imagination and dreams to entertain the readers.lol
