Some years back, in UK telephone directory, entries under 'patel' ran to several pages, more than many popular english surnames. A new initiative to help their community members.
From wiki: "The community also adopted the surname of Patel, which was traditionally applied to village headmen. Aside from issues of nomenclature, the community also began to redefine itself in the context of the Hindu religion. As well as aspiring to vaishya status, they adopted ritually pure practises such as vegetarianism, worship of Krishna rather than mother goddesses, and the giving of dowries rather than use of the then-prevalent bride price system. However, they did retain some of their local customs, such as a preference for singing vernacular devotional songs rather than the more Brahmanic Sanskrit variants.

The city of Ahmedabad will witness the ground breaking function of Sardar Dham complex near Vaishnav Devi circle on S.G.Highway on 12 January. The complex will provide residential facility to over 1,000 students and the guests from Patidar community from other states and countries. About 10,000 youths are going to participate in bike rally between RTO circle and Sardar Dham site on this day. 17 storeyed three buildings will have total 500 rooms. Two buildings will be used for Patidar community guests from other states and countries. A training center in proposed complex will provide training for IAS, IPS, GPSC, staff selection, bank and other competitive exams. There are as many as 65 donors so far, each of whom has donated Rs. 51 lakh to make the project possible. The event is likely to be attended by more than 50 Patidar community NRIs. Gagjibhai Sutaria is coordinating the project.
