[h=2]Six lawyers in Agra had moved the Civil Court with the prayer to declare the 17th century Mughal monument a Hindu temple.[/h]The district court in Agra on Thursday admitted a petition which says the Taj Mahal is a Shiva temple. The petition, filed by six Agra lawyers, also wants permission for Hindus to perform puja there.

Interestingly, a similar petition filed by Harishankar Jain and his friends was dismissed by the same court last month on technical grounds. It had sought permission to file a case on the ownership of the Taj. But this time around, the court admitted the petition, issued notice to the Union Home Secretary, the Union Ministry of Culture and the Archaeological Survey of India, asking them to reply by May 6. The next hearing has been scheduled for May 13.

In their petition, Mr. Jain and five others made Lord Agreshwar Mahadev the main plaintiff to claim the ownership of the Taj Mahal.

Mr. Jain, who said the temple was used to be called Tejo Mahalaya, declared himself to be the “next friend” of the deity.

Majority of Hindu groups including acharyas have staked claims to three sacred temples only, ayodhya, kashi and mathura. Historicity of other places must be established without damage or ownership of the structure. Taj's basement and its locked and walled up rooms will reveal its history, and must be opened for visitors.

I do not want a frenzy to be created on this....But truth is that Taj Mahal was a temple converted into a mausoleum!

AGRA: A court here has sought a response from Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and the Centre on a petition seeking to declare the Taj Mahal a Hindu temple.

This will create problem with Muslims ! Hindus are not aggressive like Muslims. It is good to solve important problems of daily life. Our nation is loaded with smart people. Why waste time on History. Let us make the best of present !:)

Bharat has been a nation state that handled contradictions boldly and faced truth head on. History and historical facts must be revealed and lessons learnt. Hope good sense prevails and facts are brought to light.

I dont understand why Hindus want to degrade Hinduism.

The Taj could have been a Hindu temple before..that I do not deny but since it was converted into a death icon..why the heck does anyone want to "resurrect" a temple scenario there again just to preform Pooja?

Are we Hindus that desperate that we want a death icon to be declared a temple again?

Doctor Mam,

Hindus believe in Vedas,/ Upanishads/Puranas, etc…

One of the Upanishads viz. Mundaka Upanishad says ‘Satyameva Jayate’. which is also our national motto.

So, let us wait and see the out come of the dispute…:-)

Establishing the truth that taj was constructed on remains of a Hindu temple is different from rebuilding it. Let us first get the history right.
