Please stop the half baked science and technology including AI

We have always prided on how we have been creative and inventive in reaching the advances we are seeing today. But are they real advances? A deeper look will say it is the opposite. We have managed to advance only at the expense of mother nature. We have already spoilt earth. With our space missions we are determined to spoil the outer space too. One day or other this will have irreparable and irreversible repercussions. But we are not worried as usual. If something works now we are more than happy with that.

The technology to top it all is AI. After spoiling the physical realm we are seriously into spoiling both the physical and mental realm. Science and technology are indeed welcome but only when the consequences of them are well thought of. In a rush to commercialize and get instant fame we gloss over the consequences and let out half baked science and technology into the market.

When will we learn anything at all?

When I talk of space missions I am not talking of the chandrayaan mission but how current science and technology work to the net detriment of society and nature.

There is no hurry. We dont want a singularity of technology by 2030 or so. Let the inventions be well thought out not only of their capabilities to solve a particular problem but also long term and side consequences.

Political power comes from the barrel of a gun - thoughts of Mao Xedong.
China's dream to rule the world will become a reality through AI engineering - thoughts of Xi Jinping.

At least in India with an ambitious China as neighbour, we just cant afford to ignore AI. We are already lagging behind by several years and in fact there is an immediate need to accelerate

And almost everything in Science starts as less than 10% baked. Progress towards maturity (at least in Science and Tecnology) happens through trial and error. To quote just one example, the earliest computers were created using thousands of vacuum tubes and occupied entire buildings which conked out due to overheating most of the time. If the creators had given up on this as less than half baked, we would not have the reliable laptops and smart phones that we use today.

We dont need laptops or smart phones. We can do away with supercomputers and space missions If we can respect the other persons views and not be immersed in acts of gloating and crass selfishness.

Dear Sir, you have failed to understand that all scientific endeavours, in their truest sense, are against Mother Nature. Science (in common parlance, the stream of scientific thought related to natural or material sciences) aims to understand the natural order and then harness its attributes for the innovation of things desired by the human populace.

Your contention does not seem to be much about scientific advancement but rather against the growth of crony capitalism. The idea is that AI and technological advancement in itself are not bad.

Instead, how it manifests in our day-to-day life vis-a-vis companies like Meta, Google, et cetera.

Generalisation is not a valid source of argument. Furthermore, you have not explained the reason for your stance regarding this matter.

Gadgets like phones and laptops have become intrinsic to our daily lives, and doing away with them seems a tad far-fetched. The idea is to police the use of these gizmos and, more than anything, the various companies and entities who take advantage of people using these devices. This ranges from corporate companies to shows such as Cocomelon, et cetera.

There is no hurry. We dont want a singularity of technology by 2030 or so. Let the inventions be well thought out not only of their capabilities to solve a particular problem but also long term and side consequences.
This is very much true. Innovation for the sake of innovation is fruitless and we have to channel our resources for what is truly required by the public.

We cant do away with laptops, smart phones I understand. The world needs to do a ulta if we want to.
Dear OKO, my point is one needs to be mature before being handed over any gadget especially smart gadgets. Lets spend some time to work on our mind. how much time are we spending? can we spend at least 7 minutes a day?

I am not againsts smartphones and digitalization provided its not compulsory and manual options are still present for those who are not into all this smart technology.

Forcing technology on everyone is not conducive to mental well being.

You are correct Renuka. The common wisdom that technology is not bad by itself is correct. But if our mind is wise then it can handle smart technology well. If it is a monkey then what? This is a real problem with technology especially AI being sought to be used for selfish ends.
