Poojas and homams

This is SUCH A GOOD POINT to bring up. As religious as we may be health is health and carbon monoxide even from homam will kill you! My guru has a really nice ventilation hood that we have installed into his home (which also houses our peetam). Even with it the smoke stain the walls and I worry about my gurus lungs from so many years 30+ in poorly ventilated temples. When I lived in Maryland we once had to evacuate our murugan temple because a couple of Mamis passed out from CO inhalation!!!!! Be careful everyone! God loves us but we shouldn't be rushing directly into the homa kunda to meet him/her!

But sometimes one can get severe allergies and even bronchospasm from Homa smoke.
I wonder if becos the ingredients used these days are not as pure as before??

I attended a Homa once where I had to give the priest some medication after the Homa cos he was having an asthma attack induced by smoke.
His lungs were really in a very very bad shape.

I have a doubt about reciting Hanuman Chalisa. I have started reciting last Saturday but my question is how many time must we recite Hanuman Chalisa? Can I recite it once due to time constraint? If not once then minimum how many times must I chant? Kindly advice me.

Hanuman is an entity of devotional love that transcends requirements for set numbers of repetition but rather only completion. I believe a person should be diligent in always completing a prayer once started however the nature of Hanuman himself is such that the devout love of one recitation will far outweigh 108 recitations while the mind wanders and crawls through maya and it's web.

This is just my opinion but it is the opinion of a Sivabhaktar who has enjoyed the experience of Ram bhakti. Your mileage may vary. :)

Poojas and Homams

Hanuman Chalisa is a powerful mantra. It will give great happiness if one reads
daily at least once and if possible one can complete it 108 times in a month starting
from a Pournami day and end it on the Pournami day. One can try at least once
a day. These days everybody has certain time restrictions. One need not strictly follow
that. All the best to have made a humble beginning.

Dear sir,

Prayers are supposed to be relaxing and joyful.
We don't really have to worry how many times we recite or even if we miss a prayer I dont see any problem to it.
Rigidity in religion sometimes spoils the joy of communion with God.

Even in the Geeta Lord Krishna had said:

Chapter 2. Contents of the Gita Summarized

na--there is not; iha--in this world; abhikrama--endeavoring; nasah--loss; asti--there is; pratyavayah--diminution; na--never; vidyate--there is; svalpam--little; api--although; asya--of this; dharmasya--of this occupation; trayate--releases; mahatah--of very great; bhayat--danger.

In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.

So as long there is a sincere effort how ever less it may seem to you it is big enough for God to respond.

Mam

Absolutely you are correct. Whatever, one does, there must be a goal or determination.
I do agree with you but then there is a need to have a time-table, in order to facilitate
one to have certain degree of interest and understand the significance of it. Joy of
Communion with God can be achieved only if one has free undisturbed and dedicated
mind while chanting. This is possible only if one has absolute free time from the official
and personal entanglements. Body, mind and act should go together essentially to
achieve the communion of joy with God.

The reason for my question about Hanuman Chalisa was I am only able to focus fully in reciting Hanuman Chalisa on Saturdays as I decided to devote my prayers fully on that day but as I am working I do not have full focus in reciting Hanuman Chalisa everyday but again I do pray on other days too. Thanks to everyone for answering my doubts. From the reply I understood one thing. We must have full focus, devotion, sincerity and also once we start a pray we are not suppose to stop it even if we get fruit out of the prays. Moreover we must enjoy in doing prayers and do not do prayers just because we feel we must do.

I have a doubt to clearify. Is it true that before we pray to Lord Ganesha, Lord Shiva etc we have to pray to Navagraha first only then we should pray to other God and Goddesses?

I cannot say for sure in regard to SV's or those steeped in Shri Vidya but as far as the Saiva Siddhantam is concerned we pray to Ganapati first always. while there are definitly mantra I say before sankalpam which is directed to Ganesh himself and begins the proceedings of any ritual by declaring intention I ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS bow to my shrine and say his bijam with his image in mind before I do ANYTHING else other than clean my body, head and mouth. This is our tradition though and I cannot speak for any other.

Do not worry so much though because Ganapati is a loving and forgiving figure. The breath you take both asleep and awake sings the pranava sylable as a droning worship to him. The Ganas run wild across the lands creating our physics and reality and lord Shiva placed his son at their head. Ganesha is worshiped every moment we live with pure intention so pray to whomever you wish and know that he is with you directing that worship whether you have forgotten it for a moment or not :)

Thanks for your reply and I really appreciate it. I usually pray to Lord Ganesha,Shiva parvathi and murugan.Only then I go and pray to Navagraga but recently I read an article sayint that we should pray to Navagragas first so I was curious to know why.

What you said is true at times it is better not to break our head so much on procedures but enjoy praying with pure heart, mind and soul.

All forms of divinity are the reflection of the Supreme Brahman(God).
On a personal note..I always start off prayers with the recital of AUM three times and next I recite the Ganesh Mantra which I choose for the day.
I keep chanting different mantras daily just to keep my memory alive.
I prefer chanting from memory so that one makes an attempt to understand and memorize it.( but no harm if you read it too)

AUM 3 x
Ganesh Mantra

Then I follow some unwritten rule of sequence of bhajans.

Ganesh
Guru
Devi
Shiva

I love it! I don't know what the participation would be or if it might be too personal for most but I think it would be fascinating to hear how the members prefer to direct a personal home puja. Strict rituals like Sandhyavandanam aside of course.
