Primary function of brahmin

I am new to this forum. After reading few posts, I started wondering: What was the primary function of a brahmin in ancient land of ours - was it practice [ayurveda / siddha physicians, priesthood, etc] or was it spreading knowledge [gurus]? If that's so, how does it relate to today? What makes one a true brahmin?

As far as I understand, doing kriyas / sandhi is only one part of being brahmin. Please enlighten

According to Manu, the six duties of a brahmin are: Teaching, studying, sacrificing for himself, sacrificing for others, making gifts and receiving them.

Excerpts from Manu

Search in that doc for Duties of a Brahmin. But do not look at the section titled Duties of a Shudra (because that is truly mind boggling).

It should be "studying/learning the veda/s, teaching these to other dwijas, performing vedic yajnas for oneself and for others, gifting and receiving gifts".

And of course, the above six are the only occupations/duties in which a brahmin could engage in. So, from that pov, there is hardly any real brahmin today. What we are all talking about is about the brahmins after ever so many "half-lifes" with hardly any radioactivity left ;)

None of us fit into the strict Caste molds. We are amalgams of all caste, varnas, jathis, race, colors etc. We lead our life according to our value systems. Let us live in peace and harmony. We generally do, except these politicians mess it up. This revival of caste based quota, these selective state based rescue, and general dispair is dragging us down.
