Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is a highly branched, herbaceous annuals resembling thistles with many long sharp spines on the leaves. Plants are 30 to 150 cm tall with globular flower heads and brilliant yellow, orange or red flowers.

Each branch has from one to five flower heads containing 15 to 20 seeds per head. Safflower can thrive in dry climates, but the plant is very susceptible to frost injury from stem elongation to maturity.

Safflower oil is flavorless and colorless and is similar to sunflower oil in nutrition values.It is used mainly in cooking, cosmetics, in salad dressing and for the production of margarine.

Safflower flowers are called as bastard saffron since they are used as a cheaper substitute for saffron. Safflower seed is used as an alternative to sunflower seeds in bird feeders.

A pharmaceutical company is currently using transgenic safflower plants to produce human insulin as the global demand for the hormone grows. Safflower-derived human insulin is currently in trials on human test subjects.

ABHIMAANAM AND AVAMAANAM. (PRIDE AND SHAME)

A new born child has no dEha abhimAnam. As it grows up it develops the concepts of ‘ I ‘ and ‘Mine’ and starts to identify itself with its body.

To realize ones true Self, the Atman, one should lose completely one’s dEha abhimAnam.

One who has realized his Self will be completely free of dEha abhimAnam and will stop identifying himself with his body.

The young girls of Gokulam, went for a bath and krishnA destroyed their dEha abhimAnam by stealing their clothes.

When KrishnA ordered them to come out of water, with their hands held in anjali over their heads, the girls broke down completely and wept bitterly, with a sense of shame.

krishnA made them realize that they were all Atmans and not just female bodies. The gave up their dEha abhimAn and immediately and attained GnAnam.

A parama hamsa forgets that he has a ‘sthoola sareeram’. He dwells in Atma anubhavam and merges with God. He forgets all about his body and does not know whether or not he is dressed.

Only a person who has abhimAnan can suffer from avamAnam. If there is no abhimAnam there is no avamAnam also!

APPEARANCES AND INTENTIONS.


Appearance of a person may be the opposite of the real intention of the person. Appearances may be deceptive. We must learn to find out the real intention and not be carried away by the appearance.


When pUthana came to yasOdA’s house, no one knew her real intention. She came dressed as a very beautiful woman with the intention of killing infant krishnA.


Her hair was adorned with fragrant flowers and her lovely eyes swirled like two black beetles. She was draped in silk and decorated with jewels. She looked so pretty and delicate! She walked past everyone in the house with a sweet smile. No one either stopped her or suspected her.


She lifted krishnA, kissed Him and sat down in a corner to breast feed Him. But krishnA knew her real intentions and sucked out her life along with her milk. She cried in pain and dropped down quite dead!


We have heard the story of a king who disguised himself as a sanyAsi and killed his enemy king – with a sword hidden under his holy garments.
