Please do not quote Gandhi. He was a good hindu no doubt at personal level, but advised Hindus to bow to bully Muslims. There are countless events and writings by Gandhi in this unfortunate issue.
 
Respect others, but what if they dont respect you? Should we just lie down?

Even disrespect is fine if it is limited to thinking and not action.

I think my attitude would be more disdain than disrespect. And that is usually reserved for those who believe that they are "God's chosen people" (of any denomination).
