There used to be a time when four inches was considered big for a smartphone. Then five-inch phones appeared and were initially described as “gargantuan”. But now, we see phones pushing 6 inches and 5 inches becoming a standard for smartphones, with anything below them considered small for most.
Smaller is Better
However, there are some people who want a smaller smartphone, for reasons such as portability and one-handed use. It is for this section of potential-smartphone buyers that the “Mini” category was established. These phones were smaller embodiment of flagship smartphones, with screen sizes varying between 4 and 4.7 inches.
A Divide
However, there has been a divide in the “Mini” category itself. On one hand are phones that really are small versions of their flagships, i.e not compromising of specifications. On the other hand are “Mini” versions that don’t really justify the Name moniker. They really are mediocre phones.’
The Galaxy S5 Mini
The S5 Mini, which was announced today is somewhere in between. It has a 4.5 inch HD AMOLED (1280×720 – 326 ppi) screen, which is lesser than the S5′s Full HD AMOLED (1920×1080 – 432 ppi). However, we bet that you won’t notice any difference between the two.
The processor is a 1.4GHz Quad-Core processor (Unspecified Model), combined with 1.5GB RAM. Again, this is lesser than the S5′s 2.5GHz Quad-Core Processor combined with 2GB RAM, but unless you do heavy-duty tasks like gaming, it should do just fine.
There is 16GB Internal Memory, expandable via MicroSD Card to 64GB. It has a 8MP Back Camera and a 2.1MP Front Camera.
The software is Android Kitkat (4.4.2) loaded up with Touchwiz (Samsung’s Android Overlay).
It’s all backed by a 2100mAh battery, which we are hoping is enough to drive it for a day.
Galaxy S5 Mini Release Date
It is launching in Russia first in early July and then only will it launch globally. It will be available in these colors at launch: Charcoal Black, Shimmery White, Electric Blue and Copper Gold. Pricing details haven’t yet been disclosed
