Some good habits of foreigners

Hence I wrote in ஓ அமெரிக்கா ...

let us be ourself.

we can ape foreigners in case we have to live with them or put up with them

we will decide how we will live ,dress , transact our business.

if others want , they can reach out to us or get lost.

we have decided that we are super power in waiting

let us flex our muscles and spread great indian culture abroad.

they will become followers of our philosophy ,religion and put up with us the way we are

no fears, they will succumb and they will imitate us in course of time.lol

I like the strength, Unity and solidarity shown by the Westerners, when there is a catastrophe.

Today in Yahoo I read after the siege that is going on in Australia, how the Australians are ready to go out with those in Muslim garb to help them not get victimized in backlashes:

"In a show of solidarity, many Australians offered on Twitter to accompany people dressed in Muslim clothes who were afraid of a backlash from the cafe siege. The hashtag #IllRideWithYou was used more than 90,000 times by late Monday evening."

Even in US, it is so many White Americans that have joined in the protest against the chokehold death of a blackman by police,

Following 9/11, Americans contributed so much money to help the families of the victims of the disaster. And so did they after the Boston Marathon attacks.

Overall, they are much more charitable, showing patriotism and are a decent crowd in my opinion.

And then spread filth and waste every where

By pass queue and orderly behavior,

try to subvert laws by bribing,

preach others only but seldom follow that,

Smt JR Ji

More adoptions by Foreigners than Indians,

More Scientific inventions and Charity by Foreigners than Indians

If one looks for filth and wastage , it is not hard to find it anywhere.

one can live without aping the foreigner.

bypassing the queue is our tatkal , only we do not pay for it.if we want anything fast , we takes care of it by bypassing Q, priorities and quota .

bribing exists everywhere .do you think western countries or big business practices in US are utterly clean.

this admiration of westerners and white skin is slave mentality of of TB class in US and other westrn countries.

They are self critical and do not have any pride of anything indian.

we would like to preach. why not when we have some capability .?, we would distribute our native wisdom to all who would care to listen to us

we are not ashamed of being indians and we need not cringe before the western countries and Us when we hear the clink of american dollar or Euros

While the post is definitely worth a look can we also look at some of the good traits by Indians:

1. We clean the house on a daily basis...Especially the rangoli in front of our houses (mainly Tamils)

2. We have our food only after having a bath

3. A separate puja room for prayers, meditation etc

4. We keep a morsel of food to the crow before partaking ourselves

5. Our houses are simple without the extravagance and opulence (at least for majority of TB's)

6. Respect for parents and guru

7. We still have the custom of having food on a plantain on the floor. Shows simplicity

8. Belief in God

9. Family bonding higher

10. India is one place where our pursuit of spirituality and religion has not compromised our quest for science and innovation

let all indians in US and western countries read VGanejis post.

Let them learn to respect themselves and have pride in indian way of living in india.

the sheer simplicity with good family values , home food and respect for our elders ,alone will compensate for all the dollars, pounds not earned.

at the end of it all this big money game with high education and plenty of money hard earned in foreign countries, the price that is paid for it by us all appears to be

not worth it in hind sight

Dear Ganesh,

Actually, you have given a list of DOs for tambrams.

But, I would like to mention that some of these habits are forgotten slowly!

Dear Vgane ji,

Why is it always assumed that when praising some of the virtues of foreigners, it always translates to 'belittling' Indians? Atleast in my comment earlier in this thread, I never did such a thing. All I said was to praise the way Westerners stand up in a single nation and support the victims of catastrophes. So far I have not seen such a thing happen in India.

Once in the famous Colbert report, he was discussing about Indian gods. He didn't even say any praiseworthy, he was just saying 'how many gods and goddesses do Indians have' and showing a picture of them. Immediately it got published in Yahoo and a few people commented that 'he was against jesus'. How can discussion on Indian gods means someone is insulting Jesus?

So similarly praising some virtues of Westerners does not translate to belittling Indians and their habits in any way. We people living in Western nations are actually living a much more Indian life than Indians, having/imbibing all good habits not only for ourselves but also for our progeny and also learning from Westerners on some of their good habits and incorporating them in to our lives for good.

Rajiramji
In india we have the luxury of forgetting some habits which we find inconvenient.

it is part of our freedom .

we also nurture our womenfolk who pull us up for forgetting some of our Dos .lol

thank you moorthy ji for yr video clip
Dr Uma appeared to carry herself well and presented a decent view of hinduism.

But when she talks that there is no conversion to Hindu religion ,it is in conflict with the action of RSS supporters who are engaged in conversion of the poor thru

inducements.

Absolutely agree with Krish & Vgane !!

No point in emulating anything from the west, our culture, tradition, religion, philosophy shines like the Stars, Sun & Moon right through all eternity!!

Dear Vgane ji,

JR ji – I think, you are judging based on your current lifestyle not based on any survey across PIOs, please wait till your kids marry which may be mostly outside of TBs (though you have my best wishes that they marry within our community) & see the “vishwaroopam” of their lifestyle & the way they raise the grand kids & their messy life style. Many TBs who married whites & other races have had horrific tales & stories. You may want to spend time on the internet learning about this from other tragic PIO experiences.

PIOs in their 80s & 90s, are all lamenting the loss of great family traditions that come over 1000s of centuries downwards when they see their kids/grand kids throwing away all that is Indian & aping the west.

Only way for PIOs who wish to continue carrying our traditions is to relocate to India.. no choice here !!

JR Ji - your USA born kids will not want to marry any US based TB boys or girls, if they have learnt your conservative lifestyle. They know how the kids in USA indulge in all kinds of "leela gana lola". LOL !!!!

Just a couple of the sayings in Tamil and Sanskrit, one of the two most ancient languages just on cleanliness:

1. kandhai aanaalum kashakkhi kattu... koozhaanulum kuLithu kudi - tamil - even if it is just rags wear a clean one after washing, Even if the food is just a cereal paste, take it after bath.

2. dehO devAlayaH - sanskrit - Body is indeed a temple.

3. Cleanliness is next to Godliness - Mahatma Gandhi in 1940s.

An average Indian need not have to wait till 2014 for some blog posting of some good habits of foreigners for enlightenment to dawn upon him, If he has not learnt from local sources, he is not going to learn from foreigners either.

I agree with your sentiments. We have currently three sources constantly bombarding us with all that is wrong with India.

1. Politicians after foreign jaunts on tax payers' money telling us how India is irredeemable.
2. TV channels of English language.
3. PIOs/NRIs trying to tell us that we all are PATTIKADUs and will remain cavemen always.

None of the sources ever say whether they ever highlighted the so called **good things** to be learnt from Indians and if any**naagareegam** is present in Indians at all.

They also would never narrate the incidences of Indians fined abroad for shop lifting (accidental or intentional) illegal parking, driving away without paying parking charges, fines imposed for not keeping the lawns neat and tidy, drying the washed clothes out in the open etc. etc. These will be buried under the proverbial carpet.

Dear JR Madam, Appreciate your post except on the catastrophes..I think during major catastrophes India has risen as a nation to support the people affected ..There are umpteen examples such as Tsunami in Tamil Nadu, the Earth quake in Bhuj and the recent floods in Uttarakhand..

If we follow this and also inculcate this habit in our children right from the young age it will make India a much cleaner place . Our Indian PM Modi has started this cleanliness movement and we must see to it we seriously implement this . The thing is even Educated people in Indian Cities who come in Cars do not follow the simple habit of throwing the garbage in the dustbin and they just throw it on the road while travelling . It is impossible to have a garbage bin in front of each house or apartment block but definitely there is one on each street corner and all it takes is a couple of minutes to walk that extra distance to throw the garbage but many so called educated people feel that it is below their dignity to carry the grabage bags and either they throw it just like that while driving or give it to their servants to drop and many servants are equally careless and just throw the bags wherever they feel like .
I do agree that we need to have more garbage bins and a much more efficient method to collect and dispose grabage but let us make use of what is available currently and be more responsible citizens .

I have seen during Train journey, many keep their used coffee cups under their seats itself without dropping it in the dust bin kept near the toilets; the left over coffee from the cup spills over and the place becomes nasty.

Same thing with the used meals plates, tiffen plates etc

In the toilets , mothers keep their small kids to relieve themselves in the doorway itself, and seldom they clean it; in the wash basin, they some passengers spit, clean their nose, with properly cleaning the basin.

Fruits are peeled and the outer portion is just kept under the seat; some urchins board the train with dirty cloth and clean the whole compartment and beg for money!!

All I said was to praise the way Westerners stand up in a single nation and support the victims of catastrophes. So far I have not seen such a thing happen in India.
There was enormous amount of helped rendered during the Tsunami and even in the recent Uttarkhand Tragedy .Unfortunately many do not go reported as the press is keen on reporting what is exotic .
Take for example the Taj 26/11 attackes in Mumbai in 2008 ,while there was non stop coverage of it live on TV ( and many of it was counter productive as the terrorists got live feedback from the handlers about our opreations ) but not many channels reported how many people were working behind the scenes in giving blood , taking care of the injured and why even many Gurudwaras and local charity organizations were silently feeding and providing water and tea to the police and jawans who maintaining a non stop vigil for 3 days .
In India Charity is not Organized or give in a big cheque like what is being done by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett but is done by the collective effort of contributions of the millions of 1 rupess , 2 rupee and 10 rupees done by the poor and low income groups and middle income groups . In Tirupathi more than 20,000 people are fed freely , In Amritsar Golden Temple more than 35,000 people are fed freely and the number rises to 50,000 on special ocassions .
In the recent flood in Kashmir when the entire Sate Government was paralyzed and unable to move an inch , Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah contacted the Punjab Chief Minister for help and Punjab Chief Minister Mr.Badal contact the Golden Temple Authorities and they assured that they will daily send 50,000 food packets freely to Kashmir for as many days they want only that they wanted the state Government to take care of the Transportation charges .
These are only some basic examples to show how we resond in time of Crisis According to Noted Journalist S.Gurmurthy ."A rough estimate of the number of people who are fed everyday by some of the dharmic institutions of this country, would be a number equal the population of Australia" .

Unfortunately we are not made aware of how our Country responds to Crisis situations and in spite of materialism and selfishness there is lot of dharmic activity and dharmic institutions and dharmic individuals . What occupies prime time in Media are only fake sadhus , fake spiritual institutions and how selfish people are during crisis and we take these media reportings as refelction of the entire situation in India .
I am not telling that India and Indians are free of errors .I do agree that we have to take in some best practices from the West but let us not judge things too quickly based on some superficial reportings in Media .
I will share in a separate thread about Gurumurthy's detailed article on Annadanam in India and what we must be proud of .

Dear mkrishna ji,

Thank you, that was educative. My impression on the way a nation stands up, upon catastrophes comes purely from what is reported. For example, when 2004 Tsunami hit South East Asia, the press reported outpouring of contributions from all over the world, especially the West and how they were mismanipulated down in countries like our good India, so that not everyone (or to say precisely, no victim who truly needs the money) got the relief money! Not that this says Indians did not contribute, but that portion is not reported at all, whereas in Boston Marathon bombing, etc, the TV reported exactly how much was collected till which date and interviewed many, many victims to ensure they got the relief money.

Thanks for educating me.

Vgane ji, also appreciate your clarification.

Most people abroad get to know what is happening in india thru the media which likes only to sensationalise.

most good things happening india have no news value .

one cannot keep telling life is good . things are not bad as projected.

many times people decide about a country after spending a few days there .

if one train someone has travelled is dirty , sweeping statement all trains are filthy.

one has to see the scale of any issue .

if there is a cyclone, floods or such calamity affecting thousands , we get to hear about some who did not get proper relief . then all relief work even good is run down

one has to be sensible and learn to discriminate and decide whether we are happy in our life . we could have better environment ,facilities, incomes , security ,law and order .

but for the majority ,life has become very much better in last couple of decades.

We are not exactly starving or falling apart as a nation .

we are doing pretty well .

only some returning oldies from foreign countries might want american way of life in india which they are not likely to get.

all of us in india and abroad have changed too much . their return to india and expecting a different lifestyle here is foolhardy
