The following insight is from a great bhakta of Sri Krishna:

(He has his own blog, http://walkwithmukunda.blogspot.com).

Sri Krishna is beyond the state of "having to maintain vairagya externally by adhering to practices"
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

STORY 1: From Gopal-tApanIya upanishad
Once KRshNa sent the gopis to Durvas muni across the river. Gopis took sweets with them. Durvas muni ate all the food and told them KRshNa is a BramhachArI (This was after He was married to the 8 principle queens and had given shelter to the 16100 damsels trapped by Narakasura)
Gopis asked how is this? Durvas muni said at the Yamuna, just say "If Shri KRshNa is a BramhachAri YamunA rAni will part waters and give us way"
Radha, their leader, raised this after the gopis left the ashram
1. Durvas muni lives on air, a strict yogi, but he ate all our food, which was a lot
2. Shri KRshNa is a BramhachAri - how?

When they reached the shore they said as the muni had told them and Yamuna made way.

KRshNa was never attracted or attached to His Mahisis. He always acted to fulfill wished of His devotees --
Some wanted to dance in ras with Him
Some wanted nitya association
Some wanted to be His dharma patni (wife) and serve His Lotus Feet
Some wanted to dress Him up in silks and pearls and jewels (but He prefered the gunja mala and garlands from the forest)
Some wanted to feed Him all 56 bhog - delicacies (but He prefered mAkhAn-mishri, or patram pushpam phalam down to just toyam)

Story 2. He always took avatAr and suffered like a human for the sake of mankind. He is a sadA (eternal) vairAgI (renunciate). He could live without food and water if He had to, and eat a feast to please His devotees. He stole mAkhan to make the cowherd boys strong, and bless the monkeys.

Story of Syamantaka maNi -- how He fought Jambivan for 28 days to get the mani to Satrajit and fulfill Jambhuvan's wish from Treta Yug. Also fulfill Jambhuvati's puNya-vrat.

3. He always acted for others, never wanted any kingdom for Himself, He made kings and emperors out of the righteous like YudhishThir and stayed in the background.

4. In NRsimha , vAman, Shri Hari, varAha, Shri Ram Shri KRshNa all avatars He was a sadA-vairAgi, sadA bramhachAri, sadA yogI and Yogeshwar -- Lord of the Yogis
