Advantages of being a big country:

1. Can bully other countries
2. Can project yourself as morally right
3. Can rule other countries by proxy

Disadvantages of being a big country

1. Responsibility thrust upon it to maintain order in the world
2. Responsibility to oversee that all other countries are being fair its citizens
3. Onus to ensure that no other country produces destructive weapons

and so on

WHAT are the advantages and disadvantages of being a citizen of a subcontinent ( like INDIA, which is AREA WISE BIG, population wise very big ) when compared to being a citizen of a small country like Mauritius. any thoughts ?

Frankly speaking it does not make a difference..becos most of us live in our own world that is
our activities are mainly directed towards the well being of our own selves.

So the size of the land we stay in does not make a difference.. it is the size of our mind that really matters.

If you are part of a large country the opportunities are large...If you cannot survive in one part of the country then you can go to any other part

Also if you are part of large country you have more resources...So in case of shortage of any thing you can share between various regions

Also the market is larger...India is considered next to China in market size...So your GDP is higher

So other countries have to take note of you

A large country increases diversity of people, culture and languages which is good for progress

Last but not the least you can be proud of a large country

Dear Vgane ji,

I do not feel size matters..big or small..it is the productivity and over all performance that counts.

What is the use if it is big but not able to satisfy anyone?

Even small can be self sustaining and can make a mark on any scale!

I am talking about economic performance and over all people satisfaction index of a country.

Renuka,

It is the other way round. Size should matter for prakriti and depth for purusha. You are reversing the philosophy.

There are countries like Singapore, Sweden, Finland, Qatar which are small but making a mark in the world arena in terms of ease of doing business (Singapore) highest per capita exports, (Singapore) highest level of democracy (Sweden), lowest corruption index (Finland), Highest prosperity and most technologically advanced (Finland), highest per capita (Qatar)

But if you look at China , India etc where 1/3rd of humanity resides & you make an impact then that is real greatness!

For example China has largest Forex reserves, largest wind turbine, solar panel producer, largest rice and wheat producer, largest coal producer, largest electricity producer etc, Highest level of innovation, largest exporter etc

India is largest banana, millet, mango, sp[ice, ginger, lentil, banana, lemon producer, largest jute, milk and butter producer, has largest area of irrigated land, fastest growing of millionaires etc

What is required is a combination of width & depth that will make a country great!...Look at Maldives, a very small country in the Indian ocean which is now on the verge of being submerged in next 70 years...

I do not feel any country is greater than the other after all one's own motherland is the greatest of all..going by that that means the whole world is great.

Where 1/3 of humanity resides only shows that people there have a higher sex drive as to be having such a high number of citizens!LOL

i think most of us do not have a choice as to where we are born. once upon a time, the country where you are born, will bestow citizenship. but not any more for many countries, especially in europe, as people used it as another method to gain entry.

small countries, if homogeneous, are easier to adminster, i think. only because, there is more commonality. like the finns, swedes. singapore is overwhelmingly chinese in culture and philosphy of government, even though it is multi racial. iran is large and mono ethnic, but backward and theocratic.

all africa, though looks black skinned to us, is indeed divided shaper ethnically and tribally, than our caste system. i think, considering the killings of the hutus and tutsis, which ran into millions. south africa is one exception, of manageable governance inspite of various tribes. nigeria is a bad example of the same.

china is overwhelmingly ethnic han. meaning chinese, even though physically look different north to south, have the same written language and have no caste system to divide themselves. india, by any definition, is more a conglomeration of cultures and languages very similar to europe with its multinationalities.

till 1925 or so, burma was part of india. so was ceylon. the british treated the indian subcontinent as one unit for admin purposes, but left out burma and ceylon. otherwise these two would have been also part of india, thus making the ethnic strife a non happening.

a honest capable government is a gift. governance when corrupt, is more devastating in a larger country than a small one, only because the impact of corruption/inefficiency takes a larger toll. small countries can be massaged manoevred into quick changes. difficult to do such in a larger country.

had india been split up into several countries, based on the language, it is commonly believed that tamil nadu would have been ahead. this can be debated, but if tamil nadu was separated from india, we would be at war with karnataka and kerala over water rights. i think so.

finally, i do not understand what 'morally right' means. the u.s. if you ask its leaders and citizens, has projected itself as morally upright and keen to show the path of democracy to the 'ignorasmus' world. look at the mess usa left behind in vietnam, iraq, afghanistan and also the mess the u.s. economy is now. see what i mean!!

wow! at a national level - good discussion.
Renuka, thanks a bit for the type of answer i was expecting.

But how about at an individual level? u live in Chennai or Madrid or Dwaraka or Lyon, the reframed question - how does it matter i live in a city and the country is big or small, i have a tv and job and a family?

renus, i do not know about the sex drive part. i think, large familes has more to do with reluctance to accept family planning for religious purposes or through ignorance.

Dear Kunjs,

I am reminded of my college days when our Gynaecology professor asked a male student a question:

Q: Which is the best method of contraception?

The male students reply was..: for the male..a vasectomy and ask him to wear a condom and take the male pill..for the female a tubal ligation..ask her to wear the female condom, take OC pills, take IM Depo Provera..wear and IUCD and finally both male and female practice abstinence!

The proff was shocked with his answer.

So you see Kunjs..for a marks man to become a sharp shooter and to hit bull's eye all the while he needs practice..so practice comes with desire..so same with the sex drive..it is a desire that drives the humans to be hitting bulls eye.....if there was no desire to start with..the population would not be so high..that shows people are gunning it!LOL

Sandhyav,

It does matter at the individual level because there are more ways to spend your time in a big city. Not just job, tv or internet.

I would say womans education and Government propaganda play a big role in controlling population..In our villages even our forefathers who were well educated had large families because our woman were not educated...They were restricted to their kitchen activities

As soon as we focused on woman's emancipation through education the fertility level dropped..Government propaganda such as We Two Ours Two also helped

Even the so called BIMARU states are slowly inching towards replacement level of fertility which Kerala & TN have achieved long time back...

What I like about living in a big city is the shopping malls which sell lovely clothes and shoes!

Otherwise there is no big deal.

There is not much difference between 2 cities in India in terms of Malls, wide roads, shopping complexes, multiplexes, parks, etc..

It depends on how you view it..Definitely there are cultural differences..I miss the Chennai's ubiquitous temples with large tanks, the Sabhas having some music, drama or dance performances round the year, the Margazhi month Bhajanai, the Vinayakar Chaturthi celebrations or the Arupathu muvar festival in Kapaliswarar temple or the vaikunda ekadasi festival in Triplicane Parthasarathy temple.

What I love about where I stay is 2 Major Shopping malls are very close to my home.

Sunway Pyramid is a favorite haunt of Indian tourists!

Shopping there is great!

In fact I always feel that a country is 'advanced' if they have lots of shopping malls!LOL

What I love most of India is Shah Rukh Khan!
