Charlie Hebdo attack: Paris gunman used gesture adopted by radical Islamists - Telegraph

The gunmen who killed 12 people in and around the office of Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris acted with a skill and calmness that bears all the hallmarks of advanced military training.

They were also fully equipped for their murderous task. Photographs taken at the scene show two men clad entirely in black, their faces concealed by balaclavas. Each one is armed with an AK47 assault rifle.

They wear army-style boots and have a military appearance and manner. One of the men wears a sand-coloured ammunition vest apparently stuffed with spare magazines.

Paris Terror Attack update

• Two gunmen entered the offices of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and opened fire. Witnesses reported seeing hooded men shouting “Allahu Akbar” carrying pump-action Kalashnikovs going into the magazine’s offices and then hearing heavy gunfire. Police said three attackers were involved, including one who drove a car to the scene.

• So far, 12 people have been confirmed dead – 10 Charlie Hebdo staff and two police officers. Video footage showed one of the officers being shot at close range as he lay injured on the street. Five others are seriously wounded. Police described a scene of “butchery” inside Charlie Hebdo’s offices.

• The attackers fled the magazine’s offices in a side street off the Boulevard Richard-Lenoir in a hijacked car and are still at large. They were last seen heading towards the Porte de Pantin metro station, north-east of the magazine’s offices. The French interior minister, Bernard Cazeneuve, said all measures were being taken “to neutralise these three criminals”.

• Four of the Charlie Hebdo journalists reportedly killed in the attack have been named by French media. They are the magazine’s editor and cartoonist, Stéphane Charbonnier, known as Charb; and three other cartoonists: Cabu, Georges Wolinski and Bernard Verlhac, known as Tignous. Writer and economist Bernard Maris, who contributed to Charlie Hebdo, was also reportedly killed.

• Charlie Hebdo’s editor-in-chief, Gérard Biard, escaped the attack because he was in London. He expressed his shock and said the magazine had had no specific threats of violence. “A newspaper is not a weapon of war,” he said.

• The terror alert in Paris has been raised to its highest level. Children have been evacuated from schools in 11th arrondissement, where the attack occurred, while police have been deployed to guard newspaper offices, shopping centres, museums and railway stations.

• The French president, François Hollande, said the country was in shock following what he said was a terrorist attack. He called for national unity and pledged punishment against the attackers.

• Charlie Hebdo has been the subject of violent attacks in the past, following its publication of cartoons of the prophet Muhammad. Its offices were firebombed in 2011, and recent threats have also been made against it and other media groups. Riot police were deployed to its offices in 2012 after it published more Muhammad cartoons, including images of him naked.

• The attack has prompted swift and widespread international condemnation. Unesco’s director general, Irina Bokova, said it was “shocking attack on the freedom of expression”. The White House condemned the attack in the “strongest possible terms”. The president of the EU commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, said he was “deeply shocked”

This looks like a clear Commando Type Operation . The men looked well trained and acted with precision and fled . I am surprised that even when this particular Publication was on the Terrorist radar ,adequate security was not there . These men could not have done this act in isolation .This is a well co-ordinated action with good intelligence support and assistance from others .I doubt whether the men would get caught . More will be known only when they are caught .

Terrible tragedy ! Shocking that the Intel agencies failed to thwart this attack. Given that these people were involved in the prophet cartoon controversy, this is a unprecedented failure of the security/Intel agencies !!

Four of France's most revered cartoonists were among 12 people executed

Four of France's most revered cartoonists - Stephane Charbonnier, Georges Wolinski, Bernard 'Tignous' Verlhac and Jean Cabut - were among 12 people executed by masked gunmen in Paris today at the offices of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Two masked men brandishing Kalashnikovs burst into the magazine's headquarters this morning, opening fire on staff, also shooting dead revered economist and contributor Bernard Maris, 68.

Police officers were involved in a gunfight with the 'calm and highly disciplined men', who escaped in a hijacked car, speeding away towards east Paris. They remain on the loose, along with a third armed man.

Tributes have been pouring in to 'heroic' men who refused to be intimidated and who saw their work as vital tools of political expression, with one Twitter user stating 'you wanted to kill Charlie Hebdo, you just made it immortal'.

Charbonnier, 47, known by his pen name Charb, was the editor of the weekly magazine, and once famously said 'I'd prefer to die standing than live on my knees'. He also declared, in the face of animosity from extremists, 'I live under French law, not Koranic law'.

Gifted satirist Cabut, 76, also called Cabu, was Charlie Hebdo's lead cartoonist, Wolinski an 80-year-old satirist who had been drawing cartoons since the 1960s and Tignous a much-admired 57-year-old contributor to the publication.

As the world expressed its horror at the massacre, Charlie Hebdo's editor-in-chief Gerard Biard said 'a newspaper is not a weapon of war.'

Islamist mini-states inside France?

A backdrop to the massacre in Paris on Wednesday ….is that city officials have increasingly ceded control of heavily Muslim neighborhoods to Islamists, block by block.

France has Europe's largest population of Muslims, some of whom talk openly of ruling the country one day and casting aside Western legal systems for harsh, Islam-based Shariah law.

"The situation is out of control, and it is not reversible," said Soeren Kern, an analyst at the Gatestone Institute and author of annual reports on the "Islamization of France."

"Islam is a permanent part of France now. It is not going away," Mr. Kern said. "I think the future looks very bleak. The problem is a lot of these younger-generation Muslims are not integrating into French society. Although they are French citizens, they don't really have a future in French society. They feel very alienated from France. This is why radical Islam is so attractive because it gives them a sense of meaning in their life."

"There are no-go areas not just in Paris, but all over France, where they are effectively in control," said Robert Spencer, who directs JihadWatch.org, a nonprofit that monitors Muslim extremists.
Mr. Kern said the connection between the attack and the Islamization movement is that French jihadis are becoming bolder in trying to stamp out any criticism of Islam.

"What they are trying to do is shut down any sort of criticism of Islam, any sort of speech, cartoons, discussion, anything," he said. So is the case in many other european countries. In south too, in 'ukkadam' area of coimbatore, the police were forbidden by the residents and the ruling DMK patriarch. If europe does not wake up, it has a bleak future.

Le us hope france takes this seriously and drives out all immigrant muslims from north africa and contains native indoctrinated muslims. They have realized that assimilation is not possible and the threat to make france an islamic state is loud and clear. A warning for other european states too. My friends from london and birmingham too are not happy about the changes there.

What can we as a nation learn from the Paris massacre

What can we as a nation learn from the Paris massacre

What can we as a nation learn from the Paris massacre to successfully deal with jihadi terrorism? Here are some home truths:

1. Terror semantics: There are no “good” or “bad” terrorists. It is probably alright for Pakistan and the US, which get cozy with terrorist groups, but not for us. Let us not quibble with the home ministry semantics of “extremists”, “militants”,” “insurgents” or talk of politicising terrorism. Terrorism has been politics all along and in some cases part of international diplomacy. The time for politically correct terminology became passé after the 26/11 attacks. Security agencies must treat all extremist acts as terrorist acts till proved otherwise. Politicians must not get cozy with terrorists for a few more votes (will the Punjab CM note please?); its dangerous. Terrorists have no loyalty.

2.
Jihadi terror is universal: Jihadi terrorists are no more Arabic or Urdu speaking turbaned guy drawn from the Hollywood classic “Seven Pillars of Wisdom.” He comes from all over the world; he can be westernised, fluent in many languages and trained in warfare. So we should make our verification procedures real time and universal. In Eastern India let us puncture the myth of poor illegal immigrants. Even among those who look helpless and poor, there could be terrorists. Our border security and customs agencies should get cracking on them, rather than cashing on them.

3. What's in a name?: Chou en Lai once said it does not matter whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mouse. This is what the jihadi philosophy is all about. The Jihaid cat regardless of its colour is out to kill. It makes no difference whether it belongs to ISIS or Al Qaeda or LeT or Jaish, for that matter SIMI also. All of them are deadly terrorists.

4. Keeping tab of terrorism suspects: One of the Paris massacre culprits Cherif Kouachi was arrested and punished in May 2008 for being a part of Iraqi Jihadi group. He served a three-year jail term. Yet he could join other jihadists to merrily raid his target protected by the police. Here the situation is no better. We just don’t have enough policemen to protect all the potential targets or terrorists before the balloon goes up. Police must network with civilians to get them to pass on any acts of suspicion. Whither the days of the paan chewing beat policemen who used to chit-chat with us and get all the information? Can the police sort out their rather primitive public communication to make it more regular, innovative and appealing to the people?

5. Providing security: It appears to be a standard operative procedure that all ministers and netajis should have a posse of gun toting khaki clad “body guards” around them even if some of them are out on bail in criminal cases. The poor editor, killed in the Paris massacre, had a police body guard. It did not help either the editor or the policeman. Both were shot. Let us bust the myth of gun toting paunchy guys providing protection. We need to prune our security lists and tighten protection for real targets and not for cha-chas, bathijas and damaads (lest I forget). Then only the guards can be trained to develop their skills rather than a paunch.

[h=1]Charlie Hebdo will come out next week, despite bloodbath[/h]AFP | Jan 8, 2015, PARIS: The French satirical newspaper whose staff was decimated in an Islamist attack will come out as scheduled next week, one of its surviving staffers told AFP on Thursday.

Charlie Hebdo will publish next Wednesday to defiantly show that "stupidity will not win," said columnist Patrick Pelloux, adding that the remaining staff will soon meet.

"It's very hard. We are all suffering, with grief, with fear, but we will do it anyway because stupidity will not win," he said.

He added that the publication would have to be put together outside Charlie Hebdo's headquarters which were not accessible following the massacre.

Twelve people, including five cartoonists, were killed in Wednesday's attack that also left two policemen dead.

Reprisal attacks on Mosques in France

[h=1]Grenades thrown at a mosque in Le Mans, west of Paris - reports[/h] Published time: January 08, 2015

Several training grenades were thrown into the courtyard of a mosque in the French city of Le Mans. One of the grenades exploded, but no injuries were reported.

Four training grenades were thrown onto the property overnight Thursday, the local French daily Ouest-France reports.Three of the unexploded grenades were discovered by police. Police have cordoned off the mosque and so far no arrests have been made.

A gunshot was also reported overnight, with the bullet hitting the mosque.

French police have noted several attacks against mosques since Wednesday, when gunmen opened fire on the Paris office of the French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.

On Thursday morning, an explosion was reported in a kebab shop near a mosque in Villefranche-sur-Saone, eastern France. There are no reports of any injuries and the cause of the blast remains unknown.

The mayor of Villefranche, Perrut Bernard, said he was afraid the blast was linked “to the dramatic event that occurred on Wednesday."

Local authorities have told AFP the incident is being investigated.

An assailant also opened fire near a Muslim prayer room in the Port-la-Nouvelle district near Narbonne in southern France on Wednesday night. The door to the room was damaged and a window was broken, but no injuries were reported in the attack.

The local prosecutor told AFP the room was empty at the time of the attack.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Tensions are running high following the dramatic assault on Wednesday, which left 10 journalists and 2 police officers dead. French authorities have introduced the highest state of alert in the country. According to French Prime Minister Manuel Valls, extra security forces have been deployed to secure mosques, synagogues, department stores, shopping centers, train stations and airports.

The French PM added that an extra 650 soldiers and 2,000 more police officers will patrol the streets of Paris on Thursday.

Paris Charlie Hebdo attack: live - Telegraph

The horrific terrorist attack in Paris at the office of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo is a direct assault on the freedom of speech, thought and expression, the fundamentals on which all open, democratic societies are built. Ten staff members at the satirical weekly, including four of its top cartoonists, were gunned down by masked men who entered the building and targeted the editorial meeting in what seemed to be a well-planned and professional operation. They left shouting Allahu-Akbar, killing two policemen on the street outside before driving off in a getaway car. Since 2006, when it first published the Danish cartoons of Prophet Mohammed, Charlie Hebdo had been under threat of violent attacks by Islamist groups. Refusing to be intimidated, the publication continued to caricature Islam even after a firebombing in November 2011, just as it also relentlessly lampooned Christianity and Judaism — its Christmas week cover caricaturing the birth of Jesus was designed to provoke and cause offence. Self-censorship in order not to hurt religious sensibilities is now the norm in most parts of the world, so too in India, where media and expressions of popular culture including cinema, art and writing have to walk the tightrope daily in deference to what Salman Rushdie in an interview to this newspaper described as the non-existent “right to not be offended”: the fracas caused by Hindutva groups against the film PK is the most recent example of this. In truly democratic societies, this should not be the case, and that is what Charlie Hebdo believed and practised. Irrespective of what anyone thinks of its editorial policy, all who believe in freedom of expression and the democratic way of life must express solidarity with the magazine, and condemn this unspeakable act of violence against them.Attacking democratic freedoms is part of a larger agenda. Whether it is al-Qaeda, IS or any other group, extremist ideology thrives best in a polarised society. If the sizeable numbers of people adhering to the Muslim faith have been able to resist Islamism, it is because French republicanism has been able to surmount even the most divisive controversies, such as the ban on wearing the hijab and niqab in public and the Islamophobic discourse by the French right-wing parties that surrounded it. While the inevitable security measures will have to be taken, it would be most unfortunate if the attack on Charlie Hebdo were to give rise to a backlash against French Muslims. That would result in precisely what Islamist groups want — an alienated Muslim population that would become a recruiting ground for their violent cause. Maintaining freedoms and equality before the law in the face of a severe challenge to security is the most difficult test for any democratic polity and society.
