The Hindu - தமிழ் நாளிதழ்

Pranams to all

News about The Hindu
தமிழ்நாளிதழ்

135 வருட பாரம்பரியமிக்க தி ஹிந்து குழுமத்திலிருந்து விரைவில் ஒரு தமிழ்நாளிதழ்.

One Sales Executive called on me today with a pamphlet brought out by The Hindu. It appears that M/s. Kasturi & Sons Ltd., are to launch a Tamil News Daily from the Hindu Group of Publication for circulation. It was reported that the anticipated date of launch will be some time during September 2013.

Information is for sharing with members.:)

With regards

this is a crowded field, tamil newspaper journalism and what i hear, hindu is busy 'stealing' talented journalists from other tamil media.

ananda vikatan has instituted a policy, that if they came to know that one of their staff has even applied or went for an interview with hindu, they are fired right away. a few got the pink slip to set an example.

serious stuff :)

This was in the air for quite some time...They ventured into TV news channel along with NDTV...As there was not much traction they sold it to Thina Thanthi

Tamil News Paper is already competitive with Thina Thanthi, Dinakaran and Dina malar...Where is the space?

What is the segment they are going to target?

I think with Times of India giving them a run for money in Chennai they are forced to act?

good & excellent initiative from Indias most admired news paper.. I think, this is the only news paper in India which follows journo ethics in true spirits.

triple cheers!!

What held them up for so long; ill advice? Or conservatism? The Hindus' once well-wishers shifted their loyalty to their own tribes? This portends something for the people of TN.

I think so long as it was a family affair, it was a tight leash

Now the family has moved away from managing the day to day affairs and have handed over charge to a professional

So this will give them time to strategise and plan the next move

I feel that a English News channel is long overdue from them...The last one (in partnership with NDTV) was messed up ...It was a botched up attempt

I am not sure whether the management of Kasturi & Sons have finalised the project. But today's edition of "Business Standard" also carries the news that former editor of "Ananda Vikatan" K.Asokan may head the Editoial desk of the "yet to be named" Tamil News Paper from the house of Kasturi & Sons Limited. At one time centeric oriented "The Hindu" was an important National paper from the South, highly respected for its editorials and news, with unique readrship of 80% regular subscribers. Now it has lost its hold due to its slant towards establishment and left oriented Politics. Though Kasturi & Sons Ltd., have excellent infrastructure in news gathering, Printing , Publishing and distribution it is still a family held News paper house, which is its achelles heel. In todays world of highly competitive print media the functional freedom is essential for growth. On the sides there is the visual news media which hammers breaking news continuously in the TV and computer screens hamper the growth of print media very much.
The tamil edition of news paper from KSL will find it difficult to face the competition from established Tamil News papers like Dinakaran, Dinamalar & Dinathanthi apart from newspapers supported by political parties in Tamil Nadu.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

dear brahmanyan,

i dont know how much the family owns and how much is secretly held by others. there was a rumour that the sultan of brunei (?) bought up a significant share of the paper, as it got into financial difficulties. this was some years ago, and i dont know how much of that is true.

also MK family is now rumoured to have interest in it, considering that one of the maran brothers is married into the hindu family.

as with all closely held enterprises with not public visibility or accountability one is never sure of the dramas behind closed doors. considering the way murali was kicked out, and how n.ram still holds sway, and with ram's extreme views on pro sri lanka which is anethema to tamils, the paper must have some deep pocketed and deep strength support. somewhere.

I guess you meant Kasturi Family, I assume Maran and MK are Hindu family.

TOI is no competitor to the Hindu in the South.

"The Hindu" leads only in Chennai. There is no comparison with "The Times of India" in over-all Circulation in India. As per the audited figures of ABC for the period July-December 2012, "The Times of India" stands first with 3,314,493 copies as against 1,558,379 of "The Hindu" for the same period.
