[h=1]The second generation of Firefox-OS Devices would pack a punch[/h]May 24, 2015 Kishore Ganesh Leave a comment
When you look at the Smartphone OS Market, you understand something very quickly. iOS and Android are the major players, and all other operating systems are extremely minor ones
Android holds the largest marketshare, owing to the sheer variety of devices available across different price belts. A competitor hasn’t yet arrived to usurp Android’s throne atop the Smartphone Market, but with the push towards the developing markets, smaller players like Jolla and Mozilla’s Firefox OS are trying to compete.
Firefox OS’ ethos was to be on the cheapest devices available while providing a satisfactory user experience. While at the beginning, with $25 Firefox OS devices, the markets were well-defined, now the lines are blurring with Android Smartphones getting cheaper and cheaper in a race to Zero, as they would call it.
Firefox OS is now facing intense competition from Android, and while it didn’t face much success early on, Android’s relentless triumph is proving to be more trouble.
Now, Mozilla’s CEO, Chris Beard, has apparently changed the objectives for Firefox OS. Instead of focusing only on budget devices, it would focus on providing better user experiences, and here, the price tag won’t be the only differentiating factor.
Firefox OS will get more features and will expand from Smartphones to other devices.
To attract users, Firefox OS may even have compatibility with a select bunch of Android Apps, but how that would happen given the OS’ HTML5 workings seem unclear.
We would see these changes going into effect through the next few months, when more Firefox OS Devices emerge.
What do you think? Can Mozilla put up a fight against Android?
