Nastalgia makes life seem like utopia!!!

Dear Dr Narayani,

Yes college days were fun..remember everyone waiting for the monsoon and go walking in the rain.
I still remember sitting at Malpe Beach and Kaup Beach during the monsoon admiring the huge waves in the choppy sea and had some nut cases classmates that actually swam in those choppy waters.
Thank god they came out alive.

I remember sitting in front row of class and some guys used to keep throwing paper aeroplanes at us girls.
Once I got real fed up and threw back one big ball of paper at the guys and I was caught by the lecturer!!LOL

Poor me..I do not have luck to be bad..even if I try I will get caught.

I still remember during internship I used to wear saree to work most of the time.
Very few of us wore saree to work and one day a lecturer saw me wearing jeans when I was at a shop and he stopped his car and got down and told me "not to wear jeans..and only wear saree" cos he felt I looked very beautiful in a saree.
He started reciting some Hindi poetry to me(he was from North India) and he was praising how beautiful a saree makes a woman look like.

Thank God the lecturer never saw me in the mini skirts I wore to annual dance parties held in college grounds!!

We had lots of nice memories in college.
Seeing guys fight in the rain and mud cos one guy commented about another's girlfriend.

College was funny anyway.

Thank God! She did not decide to cheat him in revenge!
Nice way to releive the tension... the dance and the music. :)

In college we also had a TB lady doc who used to lecture us.
She was not very young at that time but she loved to dance in class for us.
Once she came to class and asked one of my classmates to dance with her Kuttu style.

The other guys started singing "Surangani" song and madam was happily dancing away kuttu style in class with one of the guys.
We all were laughing so much non stop.

She was really a sporting lecturer but we all knew that she had some personal problems with her hubby who was cheating on her..so each time she came to class she would lecture us well and also wanted to make herself happy by dancing with us boys and girls.

With all their energy and time spent in these earthly pursuits
how will they find time for their duivine pursuits???
What an irony men chasing 4 or 6 pack abs instead of
the four handed and six armed gods like Vishnu and Murugan!!!

Sowbagyavathy VR, Greetings.

That's what happens after many years of staying together. That's why Sowbagyavathy Renuka's yearly renewal assessment in very useful. Both man and madam would be on their toes. Then 'mama' will maintain '4 pack' or '6 pack' for much longer time; mami will look trim and attractive for much longer!

Cheers!

The cricket match used to last for 5 full days and four innings in total.
Then it became one day match.
Then to the the 20 over match.
The life time contract of marriage is following the same path!
It had already became "terminate when you are displeased" long back.
Now heading for annual renewal!!
Very soon it may become monthly / weekly / daily renewal and
finally no one will know who was / is married to whom! :confusion:
How very conveneient for those ultra modern libetared persons !!!

Three hurdles in following these fancy diets,..
the cost of such fancy food,
the ability to do physically exhausting work on this diet, and
the question "What is the use of looking good without feeling good!!!"
In the eyes of some of the famous models I see the
same pangs of hunger seen in the beggars forced to go hungry!!!

Sample diet for Mamis to remain trim.

Breakfast: One medium size banana fruit with a glass of soya milk(unsweetened..taste horrid without sugar but worth it)

Lunch:Vegetables,Tofu or Curds or Paneer,Beans,Dhall eat it without rice.

After 1 hour take a big glass of warm milk with oats mixed with it without sugar(Oats will be the rice replacement)

Tea time:Cut many fruits around 3 types of fruits.Green apple has low Glycemic Index..can add some mango and some orange too.
So you get to eat 3 types of fruits.

Dinner:1 chapati with dhall or rajma or channa and mixed vegetables and some nuts like cashew or walnuts.

Try this for at least 1 week every month to give the body a break from digesting heavy food. For the rest of the month you can eat your normal food you are used to.

Requires lots of discipline to try this.
But if you want to look good you have to be disciplined anyway.

This is my time tested method to keep slim and trim.

I firmly believe that feeling good and healthy is far more imoportant than
counting calories and be brooding about food all day long!

Renuka,

Mami will put on weight with your diet too.

B/Fast - 1 large glas of oats milk mixed with almond meal .

Lunch - about 250 gms of cooked vegetables.

snacks - one slice of raisin bread with mashed avacado spread.

Mami will look trim and chic!

diner - About 300 gms of vegetables, about a cup of yoghurt, a cup or two of kootu ( with thoor dhal and more vegetables) .

No problems sir,

I am waiting for the day where I can treat patients without asking for fee.

Ok let me know your height, weight and your activities you do for exercise and also a sample menu of your current meals.

Sitting daily for long hours increases abdominal girth.
So try to walk around in between work in your office.

I can also work out a exercise plan for you if you would want.
But just one word of caution..I am quite a tough trainer when it comes to exercise!!
But since you have High Blood Pressure I will go slow with you..

Absolutely no exercise, Sir! You should ask your son to iron his clothes and go for long morning walks, instead of news paper!

Also, add after dinner walk. Please reduce intake of rice and replace with oat meal / wheat ravai. That might help.

Dear sir,

Your son is college going and you are ironing his shirt for him?

Get him to do his own ironing and make him prepare his own breakfast.

Your breakfast is fine but your lunch is lacking protein.
Vegetables are mainly carbohydrate and so is Chapati.
You need to introduce more protein in your diet either through beans and lentils.
Take some kidney beans and garbenzo beans..Rajma and Channa Masala sorts but keep the oil less.

I do not think you might enjoy Tofu(as it is an acquired taste) so Tofu might not be a good choice and I wonder if it is available in TN.
I know it is available in Delhi(one friend told me)

Ok you can also take Soya Nuggets as a protein source.
It used to be sold under the brand name Meal Maker when I was in India.
You just have to soak it in warm water till its soft and squeeze out excess water and cook it anyway you like.
You can also make a curry out if it with mushrooms too.

Dinner: Don't take rice for dinner.
Try to take oats with milk for dinner.
You may add some raisins for taste and add some fruit in it like banana.

Weight: I would want you to come down to at least 70kg.
I have no idea what is your waist measurement cos a high waist measurement has increased cardiovascular risk esp for males.

With your schedule I can only say you have to get an indoor machine to work out may be a thread mill and you have to cut down sometime in between pooja and meditation by trying to get at least 30 mins of work out.

You let me know if you are willing to cut short some pooja and meditation time then I can help design a work out for you.

Dear Manoharkumar

If you think that you are overweight, don't worry - there's just that much more
of 'you' to love !

Dr Renu has a rather weird 'weighment schedule' - it'll help you laugh your flab off !

His BMI is 25..just the starting point of being overweight..so he is not all that bad yet.
But as I said earlier..the waist circumference is more important cos Indians tend to have central obesity even if they are within the normal limits of weight.

Greetings.

Apples and pears as they are called...:)
Apples have broad shoulders and narrow waists
while the pears are bottom /midriff heavy!!!

I came down to my ideal weight not once but thrice!!!
First time it was just by exercises and dieting.
The second time by long walks and dieting and
the third time by serious dieting.
Believe me the weight we lose is just hanging around the corner
and gets back to you in tiny installments and before you realize
you are back to what you were before your started the whole thing!!!
I felt helplessly angry until I learned about the Set theory
(not the mathematical one!)

Why do we regain the weight we lost?

Ask any one who has been struggling to lose weight. He will say that it is difficult to lose weight but it is more difficult to keep it off! Why?

A person’s body has a set number of fat cells. This is determined either at birth or infancy. This number of cells remains constant (or may increase) throughout the person’s life. It can never ever be decreased.

“Set Point Theory” states that a person’s body is programmed to be in a certain weight range and the body will “fight tooth and nail” to remain in that range. During dieting a parson’s weight reduces visibly. But it always comes back–no matter how little he eats and how hard he works out in a gym. The body tries to retain its natural weight.

During serious dieting, the body learns to use efficiently the few calories available for its various functions. The body temperature may fall down and metabolism slowed down. When the body gets more calories than what it needs, it speeds up metabolism and even maintains higher body temperature, in an effort to burn off the extra calories.

It is possible to lose weight only be decreasing the size of the fat cells and not by decreasing their number. The brain always wants to trigger the body, to return the fat cells, to their original size. This means that the weight lost will be regained slowly and steadily.

There is no way of testing to find out a person’s set point. The best way to find it out is to eat normally and exercise moderately and regularly. Long years of futile dieting will throw the metabolism out of gear and it may take up to a year for the system to be restored and the body to return to its normal weight range.

Learning to accept the Set Theory will put an end to the vicious cycles of dieting with its “yoyo” effect. If we learn to accept people as they are, irrespective of their size, height and colour, the world will be a much better place to live in. People will be more relaxed, friendly and in better moods.

After all, being thin is not necessarily the same as being happy!

The Fear Of Size!

It is said that “Small is beautiful”. The modern concept is that “Slim is beautiful”. So many adolescent girls and young women, who dream of possessing pencil-thin figures, get into eating disorders.

The eating disorders are of two kinds, Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa. Anorexia means a lack of desire to eat. Girls and women suffering from this disorder keep away from food by starving. They use diet pills and do excessive exercises to keep the body weight low.

The well known symptoms are keeping the body weight far less than the ideal weight; intense fear of putting on weight; irregular menstrual cycles and other disorders related to eating.

Anorexia puts a strain on the heart and lowers the heart rate. It throws the electrolyte balance and hormonal balance out of gear. It causes muscle weakness, osteoporosis and immune dysfunction and may lead to premature death.

People who suffer from Bulimia Nervosa find it difficult to fast or keep away from food. They have a ‘ravenous hunger’ as meant by the name of the disorder. They indulge in ‘binge eating’ and purge or vomit the food eaten–in an effort to keep thin.

The onset of Bulimia Nervosa is in the age range of 13 to 20 years. It is difficult to detect the disorder, as the person looks healthy and appears to eat well. But the repeated cycles of binging and purging have devastating effects on the body.

The strong gastric acids erode the teeth enamel and lacerate the lining of the mouth and throat. The person may suffer from dehydration and potassium depletion. The salivary glands get swollen.

A well developed personality can cover up many defects in a person’s appearance. So the young girls need to strive to become wholesome and attractive personalities, rather than pencil-thin-girls with several severe health problems.

Let us not worry about the nakedness of the physical structure, Set it aside. If one is
fond of seeing the physical structure of nakedness, then one can see a child for that
moment, except for the growth of the physical structure as one grows in age (which is
nature).

However, naked mind should not be there. It should have a wealth of knowledge and experience
as one growing in age is required to execute creative activities blending the goal and opportunity.
Normally, one may have to be vigilant to utilize the unique circumstances that may arise, so as
to achieve the challenges by utilizing the opportunities and expertise.

If the mind is naked, then it becomes a child play. Mind is generally afraid of any change for
mere simple fact that who knows - what change will bring - whether bad or good. Generally
some people hide the facts or truths to the outer world refraining if it is not favorable to them,
assuming that they may be criticized. Once an anticipated change happens - when the mask
slips - for that moment one becomes naked, as nakedness reflects on their face but also the
truth surfaces exhibiting the nakedness.
