Scientist Sathees C. Raghavan, who conducted the study, also confirmed that endosulfan causes DNA break-up, which in turn results in cancer and many other genetic diseases. Endosulfan became a highly controversial agrichemical due to its acute toxicity, potential for bioaccumulation, and role as an endocrine disruptor.

Home Ministry data show more than 5,000 women and children were rescued from various forms of modern day slavery in Goa in the first 10 months of 2015. "The demand for commercial sex workers is high during the tourist season of October to February, but unfortunately there are very few rescues during this time as the police are busy with tourists and music shows and other activities," said Arun Pandey, director of the charity Anyay Rahit Zindagi.

The passengers of the delayed flight claimed that the Air India flight, which was scheduled to depart at 7:30 pm, left at 2:30 a.m. "Our flight was delayed and then was ultimately cancelled. The Air India manager did help us but the minister in the Bhubaneswar flight created a lot of ruckus and as a result our flight got delayed," he added.

[h=3]Strike affects clearance of 21 lakh cheques worth Rs.16,000 crore[/h] Chennai, Jan 8 (IANS) Around 21 lakh cheques worth about Rs.16,000 crore could not be cleard on Friday owing to bankers strike against the violation of bilateral settlement by five associate banks of the State Bank of India (SBI), said a top leader of employees union. According to All India Bank Employees' Association's (AIBEA) C.H.Venkatachalam, around 350,000 bankers participated in the strike across the nation which affected clearing of around 21 lakh cheques worth about Rs.16,000 crore. The five associate banks of the SBI are State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, and State Bank of Travancore.

Chennai, Jan 9 (IANS) The 120-year-old Laljee Godhoo & Co. makers of the popular LG Asafoetida, a spice used in Indian cooking, on Saturday categorically refuted the possibility of presence of Salmonella bacteria in its product packs sold in India or elsewhere as they are tested without fail. "There is no possibility of presence of salmonella in the packs sold in India or anywhere else as each lot of our finished products is tested without fail," partner Heena Merchant told IANS. The US Food and Drugs Administration (USFDA) on January 7, 2016 said Shakti Group, USA LLC of New Brunswick, NJ is recalling 50 gm and 100 gm sizes of LG Compounded Asafoetida powder, both coded with Lot Number: 2323 as it has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella, which causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain in those infected.

Supporter cuts off finger to support India opposition


A businessman cut off one of his fingers as a gesture of thanks to the gods after India's opposition leaders Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were granted bail in a court case, a report said Sunday. "I wrapped the finger in a 1,000 rupee ($15) note with a letter thanking God for granting bail to Sonia and Rahul and dropped it in the hundi (donation pot)," Suresh told the newspaper. "I did not feel the pain when I cut my finger.
