French police have broken up a suspected criminal gang who sold miniature copies of the Eiffel Tower at tourist sites around Paris often using illegal immigrants. The six-week operation also seized more than 20 tonnes of the trinkets stored in depots outside the capital. Police units involved in combating illegal immigration helped conduct the raids, the Paris prefecture said in a statement.

Sessions limits U.S. judges' ability to dismiss deportation cases

Unlike the federal judiciary system, U.S. immigration courts fall under the Department of Justice and the attorney general can rewrite opinions issued by the Board of Immigration Appeals. Sessions, a Republican former U.S. senator appointed by President Donald Trump, has been unusually active in this practice compared to his predecessors. Judges “have no inherent authority to terminate removal proceedings even though a particular case may pose sympathetic circumstances,” he said.

Massive underwater walls could stop ‘runaway’ ice sheet collapse and limit sea level rise, say scientists

Colossal underwater walls could help slow the melting of glaciers and reduce the imminent threat of rising sea levels, a study has suggested. Large ice sheets at risk of collapse could be protected from upwelling warm water, by the creation of barriers on the seabed, scientists say. "Doing geoengineering means often considering the unthinkable," said John Moore, a scientist at Beijing Normal University, China, and a professor of climate change at the University of Lapland, Finland.

Kavanaugh allegation tests support of GOP women

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) - For women like Jayne A. Cordes, the steady stream of investigations in Washington is exhausting. That's why, when Christine Blasey Ford came forward to accuse Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her more than three decades ago, it struck Cordes as the latest example of the ceaseless - and needless - drama in the capital.
