    Families separated at the border between the United States and Mexico are among the shortlist of finalists for Time magazine’s 2018 Person of the Year. Recent selections have included the Silence Breakers of the #MeToo movement and Donald Trump. This year’s shortlist also features the US president, along with Russian president Vladimir Putin and special counsel Robert Mueller, who was a runner up for last year’s title, and is looking at Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

    Donald Trump’s first choice to replace John Kelly as White House chief of staff has said he will not take the role, creating fresh uncertainty in the top tier of the Trump administration. Nick Ayers, currently chief of staff to Mike Pence, has been seen as Trump’s first choice to succeed Kelly, whose long-expected departure had been trailed last week through yet more political drama, in which Trump announced new picks for attorney general, UN ambassador and chairman of the joint chiefs of staff and weathered damaging developments in the Mueller investigation into the Trump campaign’s links with Russia.

    Trump inauguration spending reportedly under criminal investigation by federal prosecutors

    Manhattan-based federal prosecutors are investigating whether some of the $107 million in donations to then President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural committee were misspent, The Wall Street Journal reports. The Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, says the investigation arose in part from the slew of materials seized in April raids on Trump's former personal lawyer, Michael Cohen, by federal prosecutors. The criminal probe is also looking into whether some of the committee's top spenders traded money for access to the incoming Trump administration, as well as "policy concessions or to influence official administration positions," sources tell the Journal.

    Woman jailed for four years after pretending to have cancer and fundraising £250,000

    A woman who defrauded her husband, his family and members of the public by pretending to have terminal cancer has been jailed for four years. Jasmin Mistry was handed the sentence at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Friday, after pleading guilty to the charge of fraud by false representation at the same court on 24 October. The 36-year-old lied about a cancer diagnosis to convince family members and strangers to give her over £253,000 between 2015 and 2017.
