TN govt is spending a lot of money renovating temples, but are the contractors harming temples?

Activists and temple experts say that shoddy work by some contractors is damaging the art and sculpture in some of the most valuable temples in the state.

In a move which has been widely welcomed by many in the state, the Tamil Nadu government recently announced allotment of considerable amount of funding to renovate hundreds of temples across Tamil Nadu. The ‘temple state’ has some of the oldest and most magnificent temples of the world with unique architecture. But activists and temple experts say that shoddy work by some contractors is damaging the art and sculpture in some of the most valuable temples in the state. –

Is a good scheme I suppose. But the persons who are entrusted with the work of renovating/cleaning of of old art and sculpture,should have "handle with care attitude".

[h=1]Ancient murals at Parthasarathy temple conserved[/h]Three beautiful murals and a relief sculpture made of lime, which were discovered on the top portion of a wall of a mantapa of Sri Parthasarathy temple at Triplicane, Chennai in June this year, have been conserved after three months of sustained effort.

The murals will soon be displayed in the temple for the public. The meticulous conservation work was led by R. Kannan, Additional Chief Secretary, Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department. He estimated that the paintings could belong to the late Gingee Nayak period (17th century CE).

Two of the murals, which are similar, depict a scene from the Kurukshetra war, with a row of horse-drawn chariots and fiercely moustachioed charioteers. There are warriors, with weapons, lined up behind the chariots. Leading the charioteers is Arjuna, with a big bow in his hand. The head of the bow has a blade like that of a spade. The horses are full-blooded animals, and they are draped with cloth.

You are right.

We all wish to preserve such precious sculptures located inside temples. But people because of lack of tech know-how should not cause damage to them. That is our concern.

“Workers were water blasting sculptures when we visited the temple a couple of weeks ago,“ said R Vishwanathan, a student of Government College of Fine Arts, Kumbakonam. “They tried the `technique' on every sculpture after applying some white paste on the sculpture. The idea was to clean the dirt accumulated on them. But water-blasting is dangerous on ancient pieces of art. Madras HC stops renovation of Tamil Nadu heritage temples, activists say work is ‘shoddy’

Sivakumar submitted photographs showing the harm caused through water and sand blasting on the sculptures.

After a petition was filed by the Heritage Conservation Committee saying that renovation is damaging the heritage sites, the Madras High Court has ordered the renovation work at Chola age temples in Tamil Nadu to be stopped. The petitioner had said that the work was happening without proper supervision as the idols were made to go through reckless sand and water blasting, according to a Times of India report.

Madras High Court, in first line beach GPO,State Bank of India are heritage buildings.

Archaeological Department & Heritage Conservation Committee did not give permission to State Bank of India to renovate their own building saying that renovation is not permitted in heritage sites. Even the Bank could not modernise electrical work without touching the superstructure. Recently due to electrical short circuit, one fire accident has happened and Bank kept most part as unused.
