Udupi Sri Krishna Matha
About Sri Krishna Matha
Udupi Sri Krishna Matha (Kannada:ಉಡುಪಿ ಶ್ರೀ ಕೃಷ್ಣ ಮಠ) is a famous Hindu temple dedicated to god Krishna located in the town of Udupi in Karnataka, India.
The matha area resembles a living ashram, a holy place for daily devotion and living. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples namely the Udupi Anantheshwara Temple which is over a 1,000 years old.
The History
The Krishna Matha was founded by the Vaishnavite saint Shri Madhwacharya in the 13th century. He was the founder of the Dvaita school of Vedanta. It is believed that Madhwacharya found the idol of SriKrishna in a large ball of gopichandana.
As told by Sri Madhwacharya in his TANTRASARA SANGRAHA the Idol is placed Pashimabhimukha. All the other idols in other Ashta mutts are facing Western side as well. Once Kanakadasa, a pious worshipper and devotee of Lord Krishna, was staying in a makeshift hermitage in front of Krishna mutt. There was an earthquake in the night and the outer temple wall cracked such a way that there was a wide enough opening for Kanakadasa to have darshana of the idol. Till today, devotees still worship Lord Krishna by praying through the same window where kanakadasa was seeing the offerings/Pooja from outside. It is known as Kanakanakhindi, and is decorated by an arch named after him.
A statue has also been erected. A similar window covers the immediate front of the Idol and is called Navagraha kindi. It is often mistaken to be Kanakana kindi

The matha area resembles a living ashram, a holy place for daily devotion and living. Surrounding the Sri Krishna Matha are several temples, the most ancient being made of basic wood and stone of 1,500 years origin.
Udupi 60 Kms north of Mangalore is the seat of Lord Krishna, considered to be one of the holiest places for pilgrimage in southern India. Here there is a holy temple of Sri Krishna and this is the birthplace of Sri Madhwacharya, founder of Dwaita Philosophy and one of the three great Acharyas, he is reputed to have discovered the idol of Shri Krishna from a ship, which he saved miraculously from the clutches of fatal storm breeding on the sea at Malpe. One day when he was performing his morning prayers on the Malpe shore, he found that a ship sailing in the sea, was in danger owing to rough weather, Sri Madhwacharya with his divine power was able to control the rough weather.
Temple History:
Mother Rukmini desired to see Her Lord Krishna as an infant. She expressed Her desire to Mayan the divine sculptor. He made a Krishna Vigraha of Salagrama stone with a curd churning stick (Mathu in Tamil) in the right hand and butter in the left and named it Balakrishna. Allured by the beauty of Her Lord in idol form, Rukmini kept it with Her performing pujas. Then the idol came to Arjuna. Later, the Vigraha-idol was kept safe in Gopi Chandan.
The Legend
Legeds of Krishna Mutt Udupi
Popular belief is that King RamaBhoja, an ardent follower of Parashurama installed the statue of Anantheshwara. Chandreshwara temple was built in the spot where Chandra (the moon) performed a penance, to get rid of the curse of Daksha Prajapathi. The place where Chandra meditated got to be called as Udupi. (Udu = a star and pa = follower) The usual practice in Udupi is to visit Chandreswara, Anantheshwara temples and then visit Sri Krishna temple. There is many interesting stories behind the installation of statue of Sri Krishna at Udupi.
One of the popular story goes like this. The main statue of Sri Krishna at Dwaraka got completely covered by gopichandanam ( holy sandlewood). A sailor from Dwaraka loaded this heavy lump in his boat as ballast, in one of his trips along the west coast. The ship was caught in a terrible storm while sailing in the western coast of Malpe. When the meditating Sri Madhvacharya sensed this by his 'aparoksha' or divine jnana (knowledge), he got the ship safely to the shore by waving the end of his saffron robe and quietening the storm. The pleased captain of the ship offered Sri Madhvacharya anything in the ship in return. Sri Madhvacharya asked for the sandlewood peice containing the statue of Sri Krishna. Later as the story goes, Sri Madhvacharya took it to the lake, purified it and installed it in the matt.
According to the respected mathadeesha, Sri Raghuvarya thirtha the story behind the installation of statue of Sri Krishna goes on like this. Because of the storm, the ship crashed to a rock and sank, the statue also sank along with the other cargo. After a few days when Sri Madhvacharya came to Udupi for spreading his philosophy among the masses, all of a sudden he woke from his meditation one day and traveled to Malpe with his disciples.
As if he had discovered a new light, he took out the statue from the ocean, took it to Udupi and put it into the pond near the matt. Later, on Sankranthi, he removed it from the pond, installed it in the main sanctum of the matt and arranged for the daily worship of the statue. The pond where the statue was bathed came to be known as the famous Madhva sarovar and the sanctum where the statue was installed became famous as the Krishna temple. There are sources telling Sri Madhvacharya installed the statue in the later part of 13th century.

In the 16th century, during Sri Vaadiraja 's rule, Kanakadasa, an ardent believer of God, came to Udupi to worship Lord Krishna. He was not allowed inside the temple since he was from a lower caste. Sri Krishna, pleased by the worship of Kanakadasa created a small hole in the back wall of the temple and turned to face the hole so that Kanakadasa could see him. This hole came to be known as KanakanaKindi.
The sight of the beautiful MudduKrishna is available to everybody through the Kanakanakindi.
Greatness Of Temple:
The word UDU means stars. PA means leader. The word Udupa changed as Udipi. Planet Chandra worshipped Lord Krishna here with all the 27 stars to get him freed from a curse. Hence, Lord is considered the captain of all the 27 stars and the nine planets.
Bhagwan Madhvacharya was born in the year 1238 as the son of Sri Narayana Bhattar and Smt. Vadavathi and was named Vasudeva. His Upanayanam – Holy thread ceremony- took place when he was 8. He is the proponent of Dwaida philosophy saying that God and Humans are not one but different and separate. The temple grew in fame after his life time. He reached the Lotus Feet of Lord at the age of 79 in the year 1317. While a boatman was bringing this idol by sea, he was caught in a storm.
Madhwacharya controlled the storm with his divine power, rescued the idol and walked four miles chanting His glory, reached this place and installed the Lord here. His hymns are praised as Dwadasa Stotras which are sung in the temple even now. The young ascetics-Bala Sanyasis- appointed by him conducted the puja in the temple.
The door on the eastern side of the sanctum sanctorum is ever kept locked. This opens only on some special days as Vijayadasami. The priests enter the sanctum only through the other door. Devotees can have the darshan of Lord Krishna only through the nine window holes, called the Navagraha Dwaras. Lord Krishna is depicted with 24 of His different postures. There is a mandap nearby called Theertha Mandapa where the Samara and Mandala pujas are performed. Garuda Bhagwan in the Theertha mandapa was brought by a devotee named Vadiraja Theertha from Ayodhya.
In order to continue the pujas to Lord Krishna, Bagwan Madhvacharya established 8 mutts known as Ashta Mutts. They are, Krishnapoora, Bandhike, Seerur, Kaniyur, Sode, Palimer, Adamar and Bejewar Mutts. Only those belonging to these mutts are performing the pujas here. Of the eight, Krishnapoora Mutt is the important one, where pujas are performed to manuscripts of Sri Madvacharya.
The walls around the sanctum sanctorum are fixed with lamps lit on important festive occasions as Vaikunta Ekadasi, Deepavali. A special room north of the sanctum sanctorum is dedicated to the Acharya. It is believed that he is blessing the devotees in the form of lamps from this room.
It is believed that the Holy Ganga joins the Madhva Pushkarini once in a year. The water for Abishek of Lord Krishna is taken from this Theertha only. It is also believed that pronouncing the very name of the Theertha brings multi-fold benefits to the devotee, particularly in the month of Margazhi-December-January. People spill the water on their heads.
Daily Sevas
The daily sevas (offerings to god) and administration of the Krishna Mutt are managed by the Ashta Mathas (eight temples). Each of the Ashta Mathas performs temple management activities for two years in a cyclical order. They are collectively known as the Krishna Matha.
The Krishna Matha is known throughout the world for its religious customs, traditions, and learning in Dvaita or Tatvavaada philosophy. It is also the centre of Daasa Sahitya, a form of literature that originated in Udupi.
These eight Mathas are Pejavara, Puttige, Palimaru, Adamaru, Sodhe, Kaniyooru, Shirur and Krishnapura
