Ahmedabad: Contrary to the perception of Gujarat being a largely vegetarian state, two out of every five persons in Gujarat are non-vegetarians. Data from Sample Registration System (SRS) baseline survey 2014 published by the Registrar General of India reveals that 61.80% population of the state is vegetarian while 39.05% is non-vegetarian.

In fact, Gujarat has more people eating non-vegetarian food than in Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. The SRS survey reveals that 71% population in India is non-vegetarian while 28.85% is vegetarian. Highest number of poultry, meat and fish eaters is in Telangana where 98.7% population is non-vegetarian followed by West Bengal (98.55%), Odisha (97.35%) and Kerala (97%).

Overall, the percentage of non-vegetarians across India has dropped from 75% in 2004 to 71% in 2014. Telangana has the highest proportion of meat-eaters in the country with almost 99% of its residents being non-vegetarians, a Registrar General of India survey of people aged 15 years and above has revealed. An almost equal percentage of men (98.8) and women (98.6) are non-vegetarians in the state.
West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala follow Telangana among the states with the highest nonvegetarian population. Rajasthan, Punjab, and Haryana top the list of states with the highest vegetarian population . Experts say meat consumption in Telangana reflects traditional eating habits of the state's people. "People in Telangana consume a lot of lamb and chicken even for breakfast,'' said food blogger Sabyasachi Raychaudhuri. "...different body parts of animals such as gurda (kidney), bheja (brain), paya (trotters) among others are consumed. Many people also consume rabbits, emu and quail.'' Experts say changing lifestyles could have contributed to the increase in meat consumption in the state besides religion.

Beef(cow ) eating in Hindus vary according to the diversity of Hindus in India and according to the region also. While Most upper caste Hindus and OBCs in North India don't eat Cow(beef), many South Indian Hindus eat cow for eg. in Goa, Kerala,TN. Yadavs, an OBC group in north India used to breed cows. Dalits used to eat cow (beef) more so in South India than in North India . There are evidences in Vedic Texts that cow sacrifices and beef eating existed in Vedic Period , but Vedas are NOT the supreme text of Hinduism. In fact, there is NO SINGLE supreme text in Hinduism. Many other Hindu philosophies like Charvaka reject Supremacy of Vedas. After evolution of Buddhism and Jainism in India, the core of Hinduism also changed and the North Indian Hindus considered cow as a sacred animal, more so because of cultural reasons.
In Gujarat, almost equal number of men and women with 39.90% men and 38.20% women concede they are nonvegetarians.

The Food habits of people in India have always been a point of political, religious as well as social debate. But a recently released survey claims that the number of non-vegetarians is still much higher than the number who are vegetarians. Specifically, 7 out of every 10 Indians are still non-vegetarians.
A survey for the year 2014 conducted by the Registrar General of India says that the percentage of males above the age of 15 who ate meat, fish or eggs was 71.6 percent. For females it was slightly lower at 70.7 percent.
However, it also revealed that the percentage of non-vegetarians have declined as it was 75 percent in 2004 when the survey was last conducted.
Here are some of the findings of the survey:

97.8% males & 97.5% females are non veg

It appears tha in Tamilnadu 2.2% of males and 2.5% of females are Vegetarians.

This includes TBs and other Veg. non TBs.( Among, these people who eat NV discreetly in Hotel would declare themselves as vegetarians to the statistical compilers. )

It appears in India, majority of Hindus join hands with minorities in eating habits.

Only minorities (in numbers ) are vegetarians.

More than 50% Brahmins have migrated from TN....From 6% to just 2% in the last 60 years! Effect of Dravidanisation of TN!

From my personal experience, I believe, only 20 to 25 % of TBs have migrated outside.
TBs adhering to small family norms, is another reason.

In my family 1/3rd migrated in the 50's & 60's to Mumbai/Hyderabad side..They migrated as they got Government posts..Those families along with children's families are settled there & never returned to TN..Another 20% migrated in the 80's & 90's..I migrated due to constant belittling of our community in TN...We have become the whipping boys in TN..Many would not like to admit that they migrated because of this reason...

In my family, one son and daughter have migrated out.
I have four sisters and a brother; constituting a total of 24 members. All boys and girls are in good position; employed within the state in Govt, software etc.
We are all talking from our own experience; Our own population alone may not constitute the ideal sample population of the total population of TBs.

Yes ...We can speak only about our own experience...When I meet TB's in rest of India they are not keen to return..That's a fact!
