Water

Clean Water availability has become a serious issue in metros. In fact in delhi election Water availabilty was a

big campaign issue, AAP election promise is 700 litres water free to every home

Why is it such a serious issue?

parts of west and south delhi are dependant on haryana for supply of raw water and pipelines for them are not

operational. the govt there is not sympathetic to delhis needs. the water treatment plants ready in these areas

do not have supply of raw water.

In other areas, slums and resettlement xcolonies do not have either pipelines or are not metered for supply

so the need for tankers . Govt tankers are few . private charge exorbitantly. It is estimated that these

people pay as much as twice for supply of water thru tankers as compared to piped water by delhi jal board.

the well off are prepared to pay in posh south and west delhi colonies , the poor suffer.

private water tankers are controlled by a mafia. they look after politicians and ply their trade.

Today , after elections, govt tankers suddenly made an appearance in several poor colonies which made

people happy.

even where there is regular water supply , the hours are restricted to an hour or so. in case power fails, the

pumping of water stops adding to misery.pumping is not forceful enough for water to raise three floors .

most have to install motors for additional force in pumping adding to power bills.

Even then the quality of of pumped water is not good enough that most have to use water filters for drinking water

if ones flat is at the tail end of the supply line , the hours become more restricted.

delhi jal board is one of the most inefficient units staffed with callous employees .their accounting systems

though computerised are poor. even bill payment is a hastle.

Poor run from pillar to post when they get incorrect, exorbitant bills for water often not supplied with threats

of cut off,. they have to grease palms for getting anything done

who would like to live with this urban mess listening to dream talk of a wily politician?

K balachander made a tamil film tanneer thanneer.

in a village , where women had to go a kilometre to get a pot of water ask the authorities for a pump to be installed

the callousness of the local officials politicians make them helpless

one person is depicted who says the answer to such issues is strike and perhaps violence

when the authorities become unresponsive, the poor will take any option.

It is a matter of survival for the poor.

One can write a big book itself on the Politics and Corruption in the supply of water in Urban areas . A big powerful cartel controls the water situation and they in fact control the Politicians . Without upsetting the water cartel nothing can be done on a permanent basis . But when you try upsetting the cartel they will use all their might to pull down the Government using some means or the others - like catching some AAP MLA indulging in corruption or immoral activity ( like how ND Tiwari was caught when he was in Andhra as a Governor and the inner reason was he was refusing to listen to the Cartels there ) . Have to wait and see how AAP delivers on this water issue

y see there is an opinion to the effect furture war will be for the sake of water. there is one river flows from Lebonan to Israel. I remember once Leboan announed to buld a dam on that river and Israel threatened to bomb it. take the case of Brahmaputra; there could be problem between china and India. - srinivasan

In the Society where I live in Delhi we have two systems of water supply. MCD water for kitchen and bore-well water for batchrooms. In such way we are able to solve water to some extent. ofcourse sometime we have to procure MCD water through tanks. - srinivasan

They should unite most of the rivers in India.. that way it is not flood in one place and drought in another place... It requires lot of will and sacrificing of votes.. but it will help everywhere in long run...

our urban planners have not realise the intensity of the problem

with such a large influx of people into the capital and other cities , planners have woken up too late

in places like chennai , govt has tried rain water harvesting and converting sea water into useful water.

normally big problems have simple solutions.

in delhi ,it is an issue of a neighbouring state not releasing water and not having proper distribution lines.

the local jal board is a den of corrupt elements.

these can be easily set right by a decent govt.

who are patronising the tanker mafia are known to all.

it is just the lack of will to change the lives of all

There is no effective planning to arrest excess water going into the sea.

Recycling of sewage water is not in full swing.

Despite Tamil Nadu is not self sufficient in water availability, and badly dependent on the other three Southern States, there is no serious action plan to tide over the water crisis, especially during Summer.

You remember the train that was flagged of by NTR from AP to send water to Tamil Nadu during MGR's time...We are not in that crisis..The rain water harvesting did help..Added to that Veeranam & Krishna water supplement requirements....But if there are no rains then we had it

Also there are 2 sea water conversion plants operational in Chennai, one at Minjur (100 million liters per day) and another one commissioned in 2013 at Nemmeli with the same capacity

We do not know what we are drinking..It is a heady combo!!

If I remember correctly one Dr KL Rao with Dastur Co. planned joining all rivers in India. but Govvind V Pant of UP, then HM opposed and Nehru dropped the plan. Now, the present BJP Govt is reviving that plan. let us hope they do complete the project. - srinivasan

Interlinking of Rivers though noble in intention is not advised as the PH of each river is different and if you link Ganga and Cauvery the fishes and other organisms that live in Ganges will die when they are connected to Cauvery just like that .I do agree the basic principle of linking the rivers is to prevent floods in one area where the water is in excess and divert it to other areas where there is less or no water . But that linking should not be direct and alternate means should be adopted to divert the excess water to some storage areas where it can be stored and from there the excess water can be diverted to areas that have less water .

We need to go back to the basics of storing rain water through rain water harvesting and building other storage areas where excess rain water can be stored . In Cities we have built apartments on all areas that were meant for rain water storage .

I like your approach, of calculated and measured solutions to a problem, it is simple and achievable. Others are proposing these "romantic" but impractical ideas, that is more attractive.

Sathya Sai has played a part in Kandaleru Canal project - surprising he was celebrated by Karuanidhi government that time...

Sai Baba visited his house.

How can a spiritual leader involve in any project, when it fully comes under the Govt - State or Central, as the case may be.

Mekong river passes through China, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambdia, Vietnam and into the South China Sea. China plans to build 14 more dams in the next decade i.e. they have already some dams. The Australian newspaper today published a picture showing the barren land of the river in northern Thailand's Loei province. because of China's today 'standing' no country raise their voice. They r not Japan. One day similar situation will crop up for us also in Brahmaputra river because China started building a huge dam in Tibet area. as I mentioned earlier, future World War will start for want of water - srinivasan
