What Are We Good At

There have been sales in online sites like flipkart , snap deal , amazon.in with huge discounts making websites crash with huge traffic.

people would like to grab deals with only consideration being the price

we as a nation would like everything to be cheap.

we must be most cost conscious and cost cutting nation in the world.

If any foreign product comes in ,immediately some local guy would substitute it and make with his jugaad a cheap indian alternative.

we do not care much about quality, innovation or engineering of a product . it has to be just functional and cheap.

then we have the mentality, the seller should have the the most minimum margin and bargain like hell to achieve this

we come from a background of shortages in every thing in the past and we want to make the last buck count.

we cannot come to grips with the change to an economy of abundance and choices in goods.

we would still like to hoard our money and feel the power of it all the time even if it is at the cost of all around us

india can be rightly the land of low cost and high hidden hoarded money power.lol

What is the harm in being cost conscious. Consumers, especially middle class, through out the world are price sensitive.

I think you are still living in the 80s.

After liberalization, India becomes the centre of activity for consumer goods like Automobiles, Electronic Items, Mobile Phones. We have both foreign products being manufactured in India and the local products. Some times the local products are equally performing well. I bought a Micromax Mobile Touch Screen Model for Rs.4200 in Nov 2010 which is doing well till date; whereas my wife bought a foreign brand Smartphone for more than Rs.10,000 which gives all sorts of nuisance; and finally the mobile was disposed of.

No seller will sell the product without any margin.

we come from a background of shortages in every thing in the past and we want to make the last buck count.

Certain products as mentioned above are available in plenty.

Of course, India has to pay heavily for certain products which are not in abundance like Gold, Oil.

China has the same policy btw. The quality of goods available in the West is not that great either, since they are all made in China.

we think of different countries for excellence in various things. US for innovation, German for engineering . quality for japanese . similarly cost consciousness is for indians.

only when cost becomes a trade off with other criterion mentioned for all products , it becomes an issue.

we want only functionality not excellence .

with all our capabillity we are unable to match a sony TV in quality.

some of german cars in india are unmatched in terms of engg though not very popular or in terms of cost

we get poor quality of electrical items like bulbs or tube lights whose life does not exceed even six months and require frequent replacements.

we are a poor country with a few stinkingly rich

60 percent of our population could be called poor .

most MNCs are aiming for rural markets targetting with low cost versions of their products they sell in cities

the basic philosophy of low cost is basically good

very good day to you madam

talking of cost cutting in electric items, most are switching over to LED bulbs for energy efficiency and lower power bills.

have you wondered how to buy a led bulb .how to decide on rating of a LED bulb which will give normal 100w incandescent bulb or 23 watts CFl.well it is 18w .normally LEDs
are rated in lumens- a measure of brightness.and their life spans are ten times cfl. a bit costly but last much longer.why not switch to them?

someone got a nobel prize in physics for inventing technology behind LEDs.

similarly chinese invasion of india with very low cost electric lights [leds] etc , crackers for diwali.

these lights are of very poor quality and last only three days. their ceiling decorative lights do not last long . locals have kept their nice shells and replaced the lights with

havel

brand - a nice jugaad. similarly , the chinese crackers are posing a huge competition to sivakasi made. Govt is clamping down on their sales here

the madness for cheap goods from anywhere without caring for its long lasting value is our special trait

Shri Krish44,

It looks as though there is lukewarm response to your OP.

The truth of the matter is that even in the US, people go in for the low-cost or jugaad items in outlets such as the dollar stores and American manufacturing is costly but not of compensating high quality. The telling example is the US automobile market.

India and Indians can produce very high quality goods and may be at competitive prices so as to capture the world markets. But this will require many changes in our industrial policies, labour laws and skill training. We produce today thousands, if not lakhs of B.Techs and M. Techs who will not be able to work in a lathe machine for 2 hours, or a welding kit for one hour. These are all only "paper engineers". Perhaps the one area which currently exploits our potential is in diamond cutting and this was possible because it is still largely a caste-based vocation. As regards production of quality goods in other areas, we as a country have to go a very long way.

When we had the USA products (Ulhasnagar Sindhi Association) flooding the markets and competing with almost all Japanese goods, I had known a friend who used to supply any product of the highest quality for about 50% more price as compared to the market price for the same, USA product, in the bazaars; he used to say that these were also produced in the same USA manufacturing units, but with more care and attention. He used to give a one-year warranty also.

So, that explains the capacity of Indian labour.

sri sangomji

Our forum members are not interested anything to do with economic activity.

the retired members would like to enjoy their retirement in subjects related to religion mostly and rituals associated with it

at best they might be interested in carnatic music.

if we talk free market economics and milton friedman, they would as much turned off as about socialist economists Nicholas kaldor or the nehruvian-mahalonobis model of

indian planning with state occupying commanding heights of economy.

You have been lamenting about indian engineers not being able to operate a lathe or a welding kit.

quite true , as engg colleges do not take practical training and workshop practice seriously.

if you would like to see such things in india go to punjab/haryana small towns and villages ,you will see many with such workshops turning out cheap products and repairing

and replacing parts of heavy mechanical equipment . you will find excellent fellows who can wind/rewind motors ,fans , turn out cheap pumps and fix any machine.

most of them have learnt on the job or have minimal education in ITIs in electrical, mechanical trades.also there is the spirit of enterprise .

wherever they go punjabis/haryana people do well when it comes to basic engg skills.
