Shocked to see the comments of Ex NSA head honcho that so called jihadists aka ISIS stand for spiritual purity...Is decimating the Kurds and Shias spiritualism! Is not Mr Narayanan crossing the boundaries of saneness...ISIS is a bunch of mindless Sunnis out to wreak havoc on their coreligionists..They have caputured vast swathes of Iraq and Syria by violent means...It is atrocious to give respectability to these ruthless warriors with medieval mentality!

[h=1]Ex-NSA chief warns of jihadi wave in India

September 23, 2014 A new version of jihad is attracting "small but steady stream" of Indians to join Islamic State movement in Syria, Former National Security Advisor M K Narayanan has warned.[/h]"New version jihad is proving to be highly attractive for its strength is spiritual purity. More and more youngsters find this very attractive," the former director of Intelligence Bureau said at a lecture in London.

"As a result of online propaganda, I would say the jihadi wave is achieving new heights today. In India, what we are witnessing today is a small but steady stream of recruits from different states trying to join the ranks of ISIS in Syria," he added.

The security expert, who recently stepped down as West Bengal governor, was speaking on the 'Security Challenges and Strategic Imperatives for India' at the International Institute of Strategic Studies.

"I don't know if I am the right person to speak on India's security challenges because I don't think I was very successful in meeting them," Narayan began on a lighter note.

"We are meeting at a time of great turbulence in Asia and India being a part of Asia, it cannot be totally detached from several of the strands or strains that afflict Asia today. Asia today faces a range of threats from violent acts by state non-state and sub-state actors to newer dangers stemming from fundamentalist, extremist and radical ideas and beliefs," he added.
Describing terrorism as a "defining threat", he pointed to "overt and covert militancy" as a result of infiltration from across the border making a steady stream of new recruits available.
"Newer players, newer methodology and newer targets reflect a change in terrorist imperatives," he warned.

He said that there was a resurgence of religious extremism in the region as a whole which is a potential danger but is yet to develop into a threat.

"India does not face any existential threat from any external source but like many other countries in Asia, India too is embroiled in some border disputes such as India-China and the intense rivalry between India and Pakistan, especially over Jammu and Kashmir. But I would like to stress that neither of these disputes are likely to lead to open conflict," he said.

"For the present India's worry is to maintain peace and sustain democracy in a region affected by violent agitations and the spectre of religious orthodoxy, mainly Islamist." Narayanan also highlighted cyber terrorism as another major security imperative before India

Dear Vgane ji,

"Spirituality" is defined as a "Dharma Yuddh" and that is what the word Jihad actually means.

Its their "Yada Yada Hi Dharmsya" moment.

Everyone wants to rid the world of "evil" and re establish their 'Dharma'

It is just that what is evil to one group is not seen as evil to another group.

Extremism in its purest form is often felt as "spiritual". It gives you the High Feeling.

That is why I feel religion messes up the minds of men.

It makes us a rebel for all the wrong causes.

So Mr MK Narayan knew what he was talking about.

You have no idea how twisted minds even see killing as a mode of liberating the world from suffering.

Some Hindus always want the whole world to be Sattva(whatever that is!LOL)..when they dont see this coming the become delusional.

The start to stir up emotions and sentiments and want a mob mentality.

Remember the Shankaracharya of Dwaraka who wanted to stir up the Naga Sadhus for a Dharma Yuddh?

Same way..extremism only leads to spiritual violence ..its just that those who havent found the way to express their twisted minds call it Ahimsa.

Ahimsa is just violence in waiting.

I see the comments in a different light.
The acts of ISIS (and al Qaeda) are violent but their message is one of 'doing their God's work'
When we call someone a terrorist we think of them as criminals. Our approach to them as just criminals and mad will not work.

They have to be shown as corrupting the great religion of Islam to all the Muslims in India and world wide.

What America and other nations have to do is cut off the money supply of ISIS - right now they have amassed enormous wealth by raiding places including oil wells of Iraq. They use this money to get new and young recruits who are given money looted this way. They are also promised captured women slaves as brides (or just for temporary wedding of few hours). Like cancer they are spreading across Iraq and Syria.
They are getting new recruits from other countries. After all the message is to do God's work, eliminate the infidels , get some money and have your pick of women for sex.

Underneath all this violence is a strategy which is to get new recruits for Jihad by giving them a 'spiritually' pure message.

To counter this attack all countries and India must publish information using Islamic heads that what ISIS is doing is against their religion. This will put a damper in getting new recruits by al Qaeda.

The other thing to do is to bomb and destroy the oil wells owned by ISIS and cut their money supply.

Intelligence is needed to identify who from other Arab countries are funding ISIS and deal with those people.

A label like terrorist does not help - they have to be viewed as corrupting a great religion in the minds of Muslims

Dear Shri TKS,

I agree with your opinion that we need to tackle the might of ISIS by adopting a different strategy..But does that strategy include calling the ISIS mission as spiritual..I think we are belittling the term itself...MKN could have said that ISIS are using spiritual purity as a ploy to inveigle youngsters, I would have agreed to..It is just a way of putting this across

Sri Vgane - I understand your point!

As US military continued to pound ISIS across Iraq and Syria, President Barack Obama on Wednesday called for more nations to come on board to not only deal with the immediate threat posed by the outfit but also to address the "cancer of violent extremism" and forces that contribute to its rise.

"No God condones this terror," Obama said, addressing the UN general assembly. "No grievance justifies these actions. There can be no reasoning - no negotiation - with this brand of evil. "The only language understood by killers like this is the language of force," he added. And the US was doing exactly that - with an international coalition.

"Today," he added, "I ask the world to join in this effort."

- The world, specially Muslim communities, must "explicitly and forcefully" reject the ideology of al Qaeda and ISIS. Cut their funding, counter their propaganda.
- End the cycle of conflict, specially in West Asia, that has given rise to such outfits. "Let's be clear," he said, "this is a war no one is winning."
- The countries of the Arab and Muslim worlds must give their people - especially their youth - affirmative "alternatives to terror" - better education, empowering women.

While laying out the challenges facing the world, Obama didn't hesitate to call out his own country. Referencing the Ferguson unrest, he said the US continued to face "racial and ethnic tensions".
