Namaskarams,

There have been lot of changes in the traditional diet of Brahmins recently. I believe that this is leading cause of many illnesses like Diabetes, High blood pressure, cancers and even neurological problems like Alzheimers and Parkinson's. I think we should review and learn what went wrong. We can avoid microwave and aluminium pressure cookers and non-sticks to start with. I have heard that Palakkad brahmin diet is very healthy. What is the regular diet? What are the various food combinations? How frequently do the Brahmins fast? What do they do when you feel overworked or tired? I request my friends and elders in this forum to kindly share whatever they know and consult grandparents and parents who followed strict traditions. Even small simple steps in food preparation and diet schedule can help a lot in preventing chronic ailments. I have one big tip, coconut oil is very healthy! Get rid of sunflower, and restrict sesame oil.

Thank You
Mesha

Having less quantity of rice and more quantity of boiled vegetables is healthy

Palghat diet has lots of coconut ...

I am not sure if coconut/coconut oil is healthy for those with cholesterol as it has high amounts of saturated fat ...Not good for heart at all

I agree with your comment on sun flower oil as it has almost 70% of omega 6 fatty acids..Same is the case with soyabean & corn oil

I did read some articles about coconut oil which espoused the cause of virgin coconut oil helping in weight loss and prevention of Alzheimer disease though!

Always have a fibre rich diet, take vitamin 'c' related fruits and vegetables (Fresh), Carrot (Vitamin A), To avoid cancer take Garlic (Even though brahmin never used it previously), Have enough water for the body not to get dehydrated and also to cleanse the body from impurities, (Take Gingly oil (IDAYAM NALLENNAI) in the morning to rinse unwanted toxins in the body first by goggling (to make mouth pure) and then take some oil...Have more fruits after 50 (Especially Guva fruit and banana (if not diabetic),palm granede) and have proper regular exercise for digesting unsaturated fat by fast walk if possible or put eight (in your terrace if you have open terrace in your house)

hi

i had palakkad brahmins in my childhood....in a palakkad village...life is very simple....generally home grown vegetables...keerai

was regular.....green vegetables too ...a lot of cocunuts/coconut oil used....regular oil bath...a lot of walking had in my childhood...

even today from village to bus stand....sometimes we have to walk 2 miles from agraharams...regular games/exercise.....

no depression in life...no english medicine used....so the life was hard but okay...

I have noted to a great extent Indians tend to play undue attention to food for all the wrong reasons!
Mainly its all about taste and food becomes an obsession.

When I was in India last week I was having my meals in the Hotel I was staying in and took Idli and Vada for breakfast daily.

On the last day of my stay I noted that the Vadas seemed a little darker on the outside (may be the cook used too high a flame to cook it)..anyway I ate it still cos other days the Vada was fine and human error can occur..so no big deal.

But there was another man in the hotel who made such a big fuss and called the Hotel management and he was fuming mad that his Vada's were slightly dark on the outside.

He was really getting angry and was asking the cook how come the Vadas looked a darker than usual and he wanted an explanation.

I looked outside the window and I saw a dog on the street and also a crow near by >>I was thinking both the dog and crow would gobble up this Vada if given a chance and here this guy was creating a scene for slightly browned Vadas!LOL

Whats the big deal yaar?If we dont like something..either dont eat it all and quietly order something else.

This is not the first time I have seen people in India flare up when served food not to their liking.

Another thing I have noted that in India people actually "torture" waiters with non stop questions about a dish!LOL

Just to order a dish the waiter will be bombarded with non stop questions right from what type of spices used to how it taste blah blah blah.

When I order food I never ask questions..but waiters then start to give their Bhasya on the dish even though not asked!LOL

I ordered Shahi Paneer and the waiter was telling me "madam its a sweet dish"

I said "its Ok..what I desire is Paneer..be it sweet or sour or bitter..dont worry..I will eat what you bring"

I guess he was used to others asking him "why didnt you tell me its a sweet tasting dish"!

So you see my final diagnosis is people in India seemed obsessed with food..there is no give and take policy when it comes to food..they want it served 100% right!LOL

Dear all, It is a known fact that in the last 20 years, our grand children are fed junk food whenever they are taken out on holidays by their parents. Resulting they shun home food. Such children are likely to have problems, because the parents are not able to make them attracte:d to hOme food. I feel the following Menu would be the Best to avoid all the lol Ely problems ,not for children alone bu.t f oy oThers. Morning take IdliS most of the time. All would relish. In the noon sambar, rasam and thayir or butter milk. Night chapathis, or even uppumafor one day. All these will not create health problem.
When going out to hotels never order for unknown dishes , eat items which were earlier prepared by grand Maas.No oily food , forgone

hi all!! for a healthy living some tips....eat breakfast regularly dont skip. reduce oil content. eat only half stomach full. drink lot of water.dont take curd. make it buttermilk. and never never sleep immediately after taking food. if at all u want to sleep..sleep after b/fast. for eg. if u take b/f by 9 or 9 30...u can sleep for 1 hr from 12.30 to 1.30. so that u can avoid after-lunch-nap.eat dinner by 7.30.remember only half stomach full.drink enough water b 4 going to bed. do some exercise in the mng on empty stomach....best of luck

Dear Renu,

People do not get perfect food at home - good in ''
niRam, maNam and guNam'' (words in '' '' taken from a tea advt.!! )

Hence they shout at the waiter when perfect food is not served in a restaurant.

:gossip:
They can't afford to shout at mAmis at home on any day at any time!

One suggestion is to avoid eating outside as much as possible unless there is no other alternative

No one can guarantee the oil used, whether it is reused or fresh, what ingredients have been added and if any stale item has been mixed

For a safe food, I prefer simple home food!

Dear Rishi Sir,

What about 'kAy, kani'? They don't appear in the diet you have prescribed!

BTW, many kids and adults prefer dhOsA to idli. Hence, one company is trying to make idli popular

by preparing it as 'Madras bars' smeared with lot of moLagAppodi and packing it in a sleek yellow box.

It is said that avoiding / minimal use of white stuff like refined sugar, milk, curd, salt, maida, butter will make people healthy.

Hence many guys in the U S of A are becoming vegans who avoid all dairy products - milk, curd, buttermilk, butter and ghee.

Dear Jaykay Sir,

I read the thread you have mentioned only now because I used to miss the posts in food and recipes forum, earlier.

Our ancestors who followed the 'correct diet' lived long; but we can not say that people did not have high BP / diabetes

or any other disease. (OMG.. only now I notice that the one which makes us 'not at ease' = dis+ease! ). Our ancient

medicines and surgeries are the proofs!

Ram's father used to take two 'malai vAzaip pazham's with degree coffee at wee hours and after attending to his work till 9 am

in the fields, have his bath and do the poojA. Lunch will be around noon; a glass of milk in the evening and light dinner at 7 pm.

On EkAdasi days he had only liquids during day time and light tiffin at usual dinner time. He was hale and healthy till he hit 86

and had 'anAyAsa maraNam'. :)

Hi Raji,

Yes, not all of our ancestors had perfect health till 80s, 90s.. but those are very very rare.. as you say, my grandfather & grandmother lived till 96/97 yrs.

After 70+ yrs, my grandfather had lost all his teeth, so his only food was “white rice, hardly any veggies” - 3 heavy meals a day & he lived in perfect health till 96 yrs. by the way, both my grand parents never went to a doctor in their life time...

Like this, everyone in this forum can talk about their grand parents, parents etc…

So when so many people lived so well, & for so long, where is this sudden need for changing the food habit because of some junk research coming from the west ???

Also did you know – “as per your so called US medical research, low carb diet can lead to sudden death” !!. This small important fact is missed out when people tout about – eating less & avoiding diabetes..

Please understand, I know many people who have lived with diabetes for 30+ yrs & high BP for 40 yrs !!, where as youngsters today are dying at very young age due to “not eating well”. This western nonsense of “eat less, live more” is messing the lives of millions.

During our grandparents & parents time, we never heard of anyone dying early, today every other 20/30s are going. We never heard of cancer, tumor, or any number of the health problems plaguing people in the west.

Western fools have discarded all the ancient wisdom, food habits & they want to start afresh… so let them be the guinea pigs & suffer from their ignorance…

Most importantly, our ancients had perfected the food diet because if anyone falls ill in the past, they had no cure… so by eating very well and the right diet, they rarely ever fell ill.

Always look at all the pros & cons before deciding.

Cheers,

Hi Raji,

Are you aware of “Obesity survival paradox” ?

Those who have more body fat survive better than those with normal weightin survival situation. So during illness or if they are lost in the woods, orif they are under stress, those with more fat will survive compared to thethose who are very thin.

You will often see, only those who are very thin, will suddenly die &pass away. Those who are obese will continue to survive even if they end upwith some diseases like diabetes etc..

Cheers,

Even during heart attacks, people with fat will survive. if very thin people get heart attack, they will most likely die immediately.. so please extensively research like for years.. & pray to god if you ever change your diet, if you want to avoid this drama, just follow the "tried & tested diet" of our ancestors... :)

Random numbers are not statistics. One Individual is not representative of Billion people.
In India the ancient people did not know their proper age (I am being charitable). The average Indian now lives to a ripe old age of 65. It has been improving from the Independence.
in 1960 it was 43.

In India we do not keep death/ birth records.

In India the upper middle class has the obesity problem and only now the medical community has caught on. People have become health aware, and even Bollywood actors are physically fit.
The fat needed for survival argument is valid in the wilderness of Alaska or some other place like that. The blubber can provide warmth, but you have to be nimble to catch pray. In city setting in warm climate fat is of no use (your spouse may not need a bed).

A company in California has introduced a new snack called Dosa Chips.
So what is a dosa chip?Dosa Chips are an irresistible & satisfying snack with great crunch, some salt & no gluten. The batter ferments naturally – a new take on the famous San Francisco sourdough. Dosa Chips are handmade in small batches using just four ingredients. They are cooked in antioxidant-rich rice bran oil. Dosa Chips are delicious by themselves, or try them with cheese, hummus, tapenade, ice cream, jam... get creative! We think you’ll love them.

LOL!

Its is very hard to predict who will succumb or survive..a obese person would be having a host of other metabolic related illness to combat along with his heart attack...so he stands a higher risk..but even then..its is still hard to predict who dies and who lives..as a doctor you can only try to prevent but final outcome is just wait and watch.

Dear Jaykay Sir,

Thanks for your replies. Yes! I have seen a few fat pAttis and thoppAji thAthAs living 90+. But there were not many in number.

Now a days, I see most of the teen aged girls with big bottoms! They resemble an elephant without tail, if dressed in grey color!

Sorry to say this! But, during my younger days, there were very few 'guNdu' girls in our school and they will be usually teased by

the boys and some of the senior girls too! I guess the entry of cheese / chips / pizza in the diet is the main cause.

What do you say, Sir?

With a mavadu, I can have as many times Thayir sadam..We can embellish the curd rice with grated carrot & cucumber ..We can garnish with some pomegranate and small sized green grapes too..At times you can add chopped green chillies and grated ginger as well..Add curry leaves or coriander for flavor..Wow!

If I look at temples being built for actresses the Tamil people must like girls with big bottoms LoL

Dear RR ji,

My recent visit to India has confirmed your views.

I used to buy Salwar Kameez size S when I used to visit India and this time even size XS(Extra small was loose fitting!).

Its not that I had lost weight but the fact is clothes are being made for much bigger sizes these days.

An S is made into an XS so that an XL is made to feel as an L.

I noted even school girls were overweight.

I saw at Mantri Mall Blore and a local TV celebrity was there for some event and boy was she fat! and she was dressed with a halter Kameez top revealing a lot of her back and she wore leggings and she was bulging everywhere. Her Kameez top had high slits at the side so her whole thigh looked like a KFC leg piece in those tight leggings.
She should have worn a little looser clothes to conceal her imperfections.

If one wants to wear leggings they better make sure the Kameez is long enough to not reveal too much of thighs at the side. Its not a pretty sight.

If the Kameez is short and has high slits its better to wear it over a loose broader salwar or some broad cut jeans..that would look elegant.

I am not saying being fat is unattractive but my concern is health of girls.

Girls in India are really getting bigger..these days its hard to find slender young girls.

Each one is carrying a lot of weight in bottom and top..developing a super curvy figure beyond their age.

hi

i like GUNDU GALS better than skinny gals....BETTHER THAN KOTHAVARAKKAI POLE UNDAMBU......GUNDU PONNU WITH CHUBBY

KANNAM...very nice combination...LIKE THAYIR SAADHAM WITH MAA VADU....MEDIUM GUNDU IS OK...NOT LIKE WATERMELON...

not only junk foods but also ready made foods/restaurant foods are also harmful to the body fo a long run....

I guess the entry of cheese / chips / pizza in the diet is the main cause.
