Infact 65+ yrs is a very ripe age for Indians overall given that 800 M are under dire poverty with no healthcare, food etc.. Infact it should be even lesser.

Now, lets look at the “correct” demographics of south Brahmins/tamil Brahmins who have almost identical vegetarian diet, & if one were to do a survey of this statistical set, the average age of life will be easily into the 70s/80s at par with the western countries or even better. Most importantly in our demographics people lived very well without any health issues or minimal health issues. Other than diabetes in advanced age, most didn't/don’t have any other issue.

I have yet to meet a south Brahmin family where someone from our parents/ grandparents generation has passed away in their 60s.. forget about 50s or 40s. In my friends circle, we often talk about this, I am yet to meet a friend who has come & told me so & so person passed away in 60s..

So while the sample is limited, I would rather rely on our ancestor’s wisdom on food/diet instead of some quacks doing research on 25 people, 50 people, 300 people in the western countries & touting them all over the world.

Hi Raji,

Lets get some things clear.

Being fat (unless someone is so obese, they have to belifted in a crane to the hospital) is NOT an issue.

What is important is being healthy & fit. Being thin does NOT mean they are healthy..

Having said this, there is no problem in so & so being fat. However if they are fat because of eating “pizza”, “French fries”, in general western food, then they are unhealthy.

In summary, are the kids eating our diet, eating very well, & if they are moderate to high active, then it is okay.

So unless some one is medically advised, it is dangerous to change the food diet.

Cheers,

LOL!

Its is very hard to predict who will succumb or survive..a obese person wouldbe having a host of other metabolic related illness to combat along with hisheart attack...so he stands a higher risk..but even then..its is still hard topredict who dies and who lives..as a doctor you can only try to prevent butfinal outcome is just wait and watch.

Hi Renuka,

Let me clarify- this is NOT my inference or interpretation. So called western researchers who are publishing a dime a dozen medical reports every day, have written extensively about the obesity paradox.

They are the ones saying, fat people have a much better chance of surviving an heart attack based on num of surveys.

Cheers,

hi

i like GUNDU GALS better than skinny gals....BETTHER THAN KOTHAVARAKKAI POLE UNDAMBU......GUNDU PONNU WITH CHUBBY

KANNAM...very nice combination...LIKE THAYIR SAADHAM WITH MAA VADU....MEDIUM GUNDU IS OK...NOT LIKE WATERMELON...

LOL! Cant stop laughing.

Somehow South Indians guys like Gundu girls.

I remember before I went to India last week..prior to that I was cutting down my food and exercising more to lose some 1Kg so that when I go to India and eat Indian Hotel food (which is quite oily)..so just in case I gain some 1 kg there I will back to normal weight again when I come back.

So I was restricting food intake a little before going and I was drinking lots of coconut water.

The guy who was selling coconut water here near my workplace is from Tamil Nadu and he asked me "Doctor why are you so thin? You should gain some weight"

I was happy when he said that cos that means my effort to lose 1 kg before going to India worked out.

I told him thank you and he was wondering why I said thank you.

So you see if you want to feel thinner... stand in front of a South Indian male..he will tell you"Madam you are so thin..you need to gain weight!"LOL

Dear Jaykay,

I have seen both thin or fat die.

Its hard to predict who lives and who dies.

I have a feeling you could be a Gundu Maama!LOL

BTW there is something known as Skinny Fat..that is a person who can even be normal or underweight but with high body fat and low muscle ratio seen mainly in those who eat a high carbohydrate diet with low protein intake.

So thin can also mean fat!

My input to all is - Never take any western research or publication as gospel truth & change your lifestyle. Question everything... like you would question if an Indian had published the report... :) and most importantly use the same google to search for contrarion views :). Read pros & cons on any research & once you read both sides of the views, you will quietly go back to our ancestor diet & forget about this entire idea of changing the food habits... :) LOL

LOL !. I am not a Gundu Maama… in the middle – not too fat nor too thin !!

See, I am only giving the other side of the view. When people say, being thin is the most important, my point is hang on, have u read the Obesity paradox… It extensively quotes specifically about obese/fat people who have much better chance of surviving critical illness…

I absolutely agree, it is hard to predict who will live long and who will not.

But there is NO point in experimenting with food when we see so many of our parents/ grandparents living well into the 70s..80s.. & some even into the 90s… And if you take similar demographics across rice eating asians, we have over 2.5 Billion people eating rice…

So all this white rice eating cannot be “so bad” as our western researchers make it out to be isn’t it ? and when I see their food diet & the kind of health issues they have… I don’t see any advantage in changing the diet.

Some google searches :typing: Fyi – you many want to read this…

Why being thin is very dangerous

5 Health Problems Caused by Being Too Thin

Heartdisease and diabetes are usually thought to be problems for the overweight and the obese, but thin people aren't immune from these conditions. It's very easy to be thin yet unhealthy, as naturally thin people might indulge in fast food, skip the gym and think they can get away with it. No matter the number on the scale, though, blood sugar levels and bad cholesterol counts can be rising. Thin people might also skip out on the check-ups that can detect these problems because they think they're in good shape.

The immunesystem is like a guard at the gate, ensuring that foreign and abnormalcells do not pass. This system needs fuel to take on invading infections, andunless an underweight person is eating very carefully, he or she could easilystarve this disease defense guard.

That meansthat very thin people are at extra risk for gettingsick during cold and flu season, and they could be at risk for more seriousconditions such as cancer, which begins with abnormal cell activity.

Nutritionaldeficiencies can also lead to the next problem on our list. What is it?

Most of you must have assumed Coffee is bad & Greentea is very very good.

Did you know Green tea can severely damage the liver.USFDA has stopped companies from advertising the benefits of Green Tea !!.Surprise isn’t it.

Did you know Wheat is the #1 food for ageing, not tomention it leads to severe gluten allergy & Celiac disease ? you will see, rice eaters will generally look very young, look at the Chinese etc…

With diabetes, one can take a tablet & continue lifeas normal, with Celiac – intestinal disease, one needs to be hospitalizedimmediately..

Did u know high protein diet will damage the kidneys ???

Did you know????? So check the cons of every great dietpeople talk about…

Namaskarams,

There have been lot of changes in the traditional diet of Brahmins recently. I believe that this is leading cause of many illnesses like Diabetes, High blood pressure, cancers and even neurological problems like Alzheimers and Parkinson's. I think we should review and learn what went wrong. We can avoid microwave and aluminium pressure cookers and non-sticks to start with. I have heard that Palakkad brahmin diet is very healthy. What is the regular diet? What are the various food combinations? How frequently do the Brahmins fast? What do they do when you feel overworked or tired? I request my friends and elders in this forum to kindly share whatever they know and consult grandparents and parents who followed strict traditions. Even small simple steps in food preparation and diet schedule can help a lot in preventing chronic ailments. I have one big tip, coconut oil is very healthy! Get rid of sunflower, and restrict sesame oil.

Thank You
Mesha

Ok where to begin? Lets start with why our diet worked for generations before and why it is failing in ours. Generations before did not have things like cars and buses and airplanes, etc. They walked everywhere. Calories in and calories out were adequate. Second, they didn't have the quantity of food that we have today. Possibly even go without eating some days (i.e. Ekadashi etc.). Third there was nothing that was not "organic" that they consumed, everything was fresh. These days everything is easily available and you don't even have to seek it out, it can even be ordered online these days and delivered directly to you. We're too sedentary a society these day's and that's killing us off.

Yesterday there was a discussion in "NEEYA NAANA" Vijay TV Programme. They have told that in the mortality rate of people who do regular general checkups and people who do not, there is not much difference.

Even the morbidity rate (that is for disease prevention also) also there is not much difference. Therefore general check up after the age of 45 or 50 is also not a better way of preventing people from death or preventing chronic diseases.

Therefore as previously told by JAYKAY, it is purely on our own bio clock rythm and how we control our breadth through slow breadth by way of relaxing rather than get stressed for everything. The way of life which changed to fast paced is one of the causes for our early death or our getting chronic and early age diseases like sugar,BP, cholestrol, etc.,

Actually to consume food and give health, one should have flavour in order to induce our saliva which actually is the first reason for our digestion.Whenever we eat something or do something, we have to relish what we do. That is actually told in ZEN Buddhism also. Therefore there is nothing wrong in having a food which suits our taste as well as fill our stomach. One thing is we should not always be too much particular about food as rightly told by Mrs. Renuka that we can't always get a food which serves according to 100 % expectation of ours.

QUOTE=Jaykay767;256853 My input to all is - Never take any western research or publication as gospel truth & change your lifestyle. Question everything...

This point i mostly agree because most of the western research relating to food items and others of commercial or marketable value are only serving the purpose of people who want to make money rather than helping us.

Second whatever we consume from childhood will only help us to get digested easily since our digestive system has accustomed to that food. May be due to ageing our digestive system may be slow to digest..that does not mean that we should leave our traditional food altogether.

Third the life span is more dependent on our breath control rather than the type of food we eat. That is the life style (fast paced or normal paced) and the level of stress leads to more shorter life span that the food.
