it is basically lack of enterprise
In our families,engaging in business activities is looked down
all TB parents want their children to get high education and higher monthly salaries from MNC or secure govt. ,civil services jobs.
In bania and marwadi,gujarati families business is the norm. education is not that much stressed upon. those who do not do well in education are automatic choice for family business. those who are not good for business are made to take govt jobs or for ladies ,they become housewives having sona ,chandi given to them by their families and spouse who make merry running their business

Business is the making of money...This is where TB's fail..Surprisngly if they can succeed as CEO of a company why not private business...What is so great in the story that I shared..Rahul Gupta did not have any God father..He had a business idea..Started it from scratch...He has used plain common sense

naturally you are not surprised. you know, there is a desire to explore the paths not traversed before by TBs. brahmins can smell money and not act smart to get it since their risk taking ability is far less. but they feel bad that others are making it thru business ventures. most think you require money to start a business. money is the least of the requirements . school and college education does not prepare youngsters to make money. there is a brilliant book Good dad and bad Dad. - it is about what should be taught to make a person generate wealth with enterprise and risk taking. A must read for brahmin parents and others who are wary of business

I did not say its in the genes but traditionally those who are in business families tend to think a little differently.

I have met a few out here and they are obsessed with money and goddess Laxmi and might go to any extent for profit and gain..that is something not everyone can do.

you may look with disdain at those who generate wealth by their enterprise. without pushing the limits too much and not getting obsessed with money making you can become wealthy with very little efforts.just watching what others do and just doing 10 to 15 percent of what they do investing your skills ,brains and small money you can afford to lose. if you try it you will find it exciting. when I took my first job in govt ,I complained about lack of work and boredom. a senior colleague taught me to invest in stock market in 70s . I still have lot of those stock holdings.got thru IPO . another pushed me into real estate took money from me to buy a plot for me at 11 rs a metre which is worth lakhs today.my friend told me my kids will bless me for what I am doing. I was a bachelor then,carefree, not caring much about money.all this did not call for much intelligence and much money .only damn care attitude. I believe ,if you cannot think differently, go to one who does and do obediently what he wants. you will be a gainer in life

today's business is a skillset - whether it be retail or wholesale or manufacturing or consulting. a few books will give you sufficient idea how to operate one.

having said that, the mindset of folks is a different issue. also own business means long hours of work and 101% dedication, all of which, tambrams have no desire to commit. i think by and large, we like to get paid very well, for 9 to 5 work.

Nope I do not look at it with disdain.

I myself run my own solo practice..so its also like business in a way and looong working hours.

For most doctors here weekdays is almost 12 hours work.
At least in other professions to a certain extent one can delegate the work but for us..we have to be there.. no other choice.

what you say is quite true. brahmins have skill sets in It , finance ,enggwhich comes easily to them.they can join others who can manage the business and marketind end of it . in most business houses, technical disciplines are TBs and business ,marketing such related activities are left to punjabis. you find most top posts in business occupied by punjabis and southies are technical or finance
directors. it is not easyto change mindset . unless older generation lets go youngsters cannot make it in business ventures

what you say is true. brahmins are good in finance,iT and engg. they can tie up with punjabis who can manage the business and marketing end this is how it is in MNCs. mindset is a different issue .it can be changed only if parents change

You cannot be a solo in business for long term..Have a partner.In case wife is working you can take the risk and plunge head on..You require someone to take care of other eventualities/emergencies

you know there is no money in consulting alone.no sense killing oneself with12 hour schedules. you have a home also. consulting is always combined with other facilities such as testing labs, inhouse facilities for minor operations and having qualified technicians and nurses who aid in managing the show. it has to be a team effort with more than one doctor with many specialisations. the scale of operation matters very much to grow fast

Aren't TBs good followers than good business men? Yester years, some Bania would start a business and a TB would go there as an Accountant. In today's world, some Bania would start an Engg company and TB would go there as a computer programmer. As K has mentioned, it is more of mindset than of skill set.

i can only second this ............. i give some word set ....... procurement, cost control, scope creep, unit per share, exchange rate, inflation, conflict management, money, loss to begin with.........

genes = memory (obviously the hippocampus of a kid will have some memories of his dad)= mind set=word set.

you know more after that............, words, thoughts, action ------RESULTS dude!

Rs. 500/ per half an hour vocal class. And, many of them teach through 'skype' and get $ from the students living in the U S of A.

May be we can call this music-business!

skype is used by many psychiatrists / psychologist, i think they do some initial face to face assessment physically initially.

business in a slightly larger sense is what is being debated ?

but modern day business terminologies have changed quite a bit. for example, a HOD = co-ordinator of the department. more formal hierarchial leadership is found in only in "unruly mob" kind of scenario where work ethics is poor. modern day leadership to be very informal i can only predict.......

BTW there is something called CONTRACT CLOSING= where many conflicts are resolved and a project is FORMALLY CLOSED AND COMPLETED.

not much money in teaching dance, i think. my cousin, who has about 50 students, after paying for 2 assistants, does not get anything to write home about. cannot manage even to feed her household on that, with home cooking.

only good income comes during arangetram. especially if it is in the usa, with 2 months of stay added on, for last minute high pressure preparation.

Our friend's D I L is a carnatic singer settled in N J. She mints more money than her husband, who holds a very high post!

She has trained her voice in high pitched film songs too and accompanies many male artists, who visit the U S of A from

India. She has a lovely voice and gives free accommodation + food for the visiting artists, in her huge house.

P.S: Her husband has converted the basement of their house as a nice recording theater. :thumb:

It is my belief that artists are poor project managers to use time and cost managements techniques. they might be able to do technical detailing with respect to their art. you find many film and sport stars using professional managers for their career management. money making with ones talents requires a mindset which most do not have. many of these artists use their spouses for managing their career

behind every successful artist there is a meek husband managing the show. one famous carnatic singers husband committed suicide when his wife did not let him manage her career
