Why do we dislike unpleasant truths

Why do we care less for unpleasant truths? Truth is bitter & we run away from it! But we are ready to listen to any type of un comforting lies which border on fantasy..You can see how we vote! Despite knowing that freebies do not come free we go for it! We become gullible and loose our sense of reasoning many a time! Is it because those who share the so called truth are rudderless and cannot change the status quo or is because those who tell lies are schemy and are able to manoeuvre the way by gift of gab? They create a facade and get followers!!

Satyam Bruyat Priyam Bruyat Na Bruyat Satyam Apriyam

satyam bruyat priyam bruyat na bruyat satyam apriyam
priyam ca nanrutam bruyat esha dharmah sanatanah

Speak truth in such a way that it should be pleasing to others. Never speak truth, which is unpleasant to others. Never speak untruth, which might be pleasant. This is the path of eternal morality, sanatana dharma.

To speak truth is an eternal value irrespective of time and place. But the expression of truth should be accompanied by two conditions. Firstly, it should be presented in a loving manner and secondly it should be spoken for the betterment of others. How you speak is as important as what is said. Priyam means speech that does not hurt others. Hitam is something that is said for the good or betterment of others. One should be careful of speaking truth but not hurting others.

We should be careful in speaking the truth. The purpose should be good and the words used and the manners in which they are spoken are important. So the value of truthfulness is relative to a situation. According to the Indian scriptures while living in the world of relativity truth can be interpreted in many ways.

What is truth?
What is the point of making someone unhappy?
What can you gain by telling unpleasant truths(!)?

I would like to explain with an example in politics...For example you might say that so & so is corrupt..He takes bribes....He has gained pecuniary advantage in a contract..This is the truth...But people may still support the accused who is notorious for his falsehood/lies and calumny because of his caste or community or some vote bank..The accused wants to be good in public eye and gives lot of donations for noble or not-so-noble causes, he takes care of his people & showers them with coveted posts...Now you can judge which category rules the roost..Do the public support you because of sharing undiluted truth which is unpleasant to hear??

Politics and truth do not blend. Politicians have to sell you a vision to get elected.
If movies were made to depict truth, you will have lot empty theaters and bankrupt producers.
Life is to a great extent make belief. You have to have a positive and somewhat grandiose vision, it may be mirage but it gives you hope. If you can only have truth, they will all be as boring as Satyajit Ray movies.

You say a politician so & so.. is corrupt................. It is truth No 1.

Despite his corrupt practices, the politician wins (people, power & money) by corrupt means.........It is truth No 2

You lose in life and he wins in life.............is again a truth............Truth No 3.

Truth No.3 ......one truth wins another truth; truth is always a truth. .....wins in a way....................lol

Prasadji I gave you a thumbs up but I object to you referring to Satyajit Ray movies as boring. He didn't just make Pather Panchali you know. You should check out some of his detective thrillers.

But as we grow older isnt it better to be dealing with unpleasant truth than sugar coating our words?

I like the direct approach however unpleasant it is at least I do not have to play a game of pretenses.

BTW there are 2 ways of dealing with the Hard Core Truth(Unpleasant Truth)...it all depends on the intent of the person who is telling us the unpleasant truth.

There are people who are actually shot gun point blank types who are just not used to sugar coating their words but they do not intend to be Holier than Thou..for such people just thank them for their opinion.

Now there is another type who speak the unpleasant truth becos they want to spew venom..act Holier or Better than Thou....these types are looking for conflict..so do not give them the chance to have a conflict.

Instead praise them..saying you admire their ability to differentiate the truth from untruth..compare them with the Royal Swan that can separate milk from water.

Watch them get confused as why we failed to get angry and react!LOL

If someone tells unpleasant truth, best to sock them and give a black eye .

Later on one can reflect whether what he says is true/correct..

Who wants unpleasant truths from others by choice.

We do not want to be counted as mahatmas.

Sorry Pather Panchali was the only Ray movie I had seen. LOL, thanks for the thumbs up.
