I Sincerely wish members post their posts which are in the form of questions in this section;

I thank Mr Praveen for creating a separate section for this.

Will you be able to stop buying Silk Saree?

All the wondrous qualities of silk come at the price of literally billions of silkworms, all of whom are raised and killed in order to harvest their valuable cocoons. For people trying to live as compassionate a life as possible, there are alternatives. So-called "ahimsa silk" or "peace silk" is made only from cocoons discarded after the moth has naturally emerged. It is marketed and sold by a small number of companies and is an option which some Hindus may find acceptable. Even here though, doubts are justly raised about whether such silk should be called "nonviolent.

Please also read this:
Silk is the fiber that silkworms weave to make cocoons. To obtain silk, distributors boil the worms alive inside their cocoons. Anyone who has ever seen worms startle when their dark homes are uncovered must acknowledge that worms are sensate—they produce endorphins and have a physical response to pain.

What

Sri Swami Chandrashekarendra Saraswati on this:

Our women must give up their fondness for diamonds and silks. This will be great help to our family and social life. Indeed womanhood itself will stand to gain and stridharma will flourish. Woman should think of the millions of silkworms killed to make the sari with which they drape themselves. They claim that they are vegetarians. So should they not feel remorse about being indirectly responsible for the destruction of countless silkworms because of their love of silk sarees? If women of wel lto- do families realise this and stop wearing silk, they will no longer set a bad example to their less fortunate sisters.

Q: Will you be able to stop buying Silk Saree?

A: Yes! I bought one silk saree for myself and a few more as gift to my relatives in 2005. After that, I got two more from

my close relatives, as gift, till now (2012). I always buy poly silk sarees and wear this type on almost on all days at home! :)

:gossip:
I have at least 60 poly silk sarees!

This is not a direct answer, but something connected with sarees!

The advantages I find with poly silk sarees are:

1. Worms are not killed to manufacture these sarees.

2. They are very durable.

3. We can machine wash poly silk.

4. Colors will not run!

5. They are made in great combination of colors.

6. The price ranges from Rs. 250/ to Rs. 700/ only.

7. 'Light iron' is enough and could be done at home.

8. If tassels are made, they appear just like original silk sarees!

The only disadvantage is that it is difficult to wear during summer, especially in Sing. Chennai.

What is poly silk? Is it like those garden sarees or something? Silk especially Kanjeevarams are sooooooooo expensive!! I've recently got a hugeee craving for cotton especially bengal handlooms. So much cheaper and so pretty, natural fibre and no killling worms! And i've been toying with the idea of getting one of those Kerala kasavu saris (cotton with gold border). Me and cotton go a long way back. Even if i want to buy some other material i always end up with cotton, especially for salwars.

These are really pretty bengal handlooms. I think it beats all those chiffons, georgettes, tissues, nets with loads and loads of stone work, sequins and so heavy to boot. These saris like silk rely on the weaves and threadwork, plus is classy without being ostentatious :)

Mr. PJ,
Your question is pertinent, but so is the position of PETA, or Vegans. We cannot live in this world without some degree of harm to some living organisms, may it be plant, bacteria or some other forms. We should minimize our contribution to the destruction of life forms. You can take it to extremes and make others miserable with our position, or privately live our ideal way.
satyam bruyat priyam bruyat na bruyat satyam apriyam
priyam ca nanrutam bruyat esha dharmah sanatanah

By imposing our view of the world on others we only impose misery.
So live by your rules and let others live by their rules.

Did you read my question fully before answering ?
It is the advice given by Sankaracharya Himself on this;

My eldest brother happened to meet the Maha Periyava just before my younger son's marriage for blessings with the Marriage Pathirikai
Maha Periyava advised him not to but
y any Silk saree for the marriage; My brother kept his promise , and no Silk saree was bought for the marriage.
He also advised him to run Veda Padasala and my brother did it for 7 years.

I am sorry but i read this twice, thrice but still i am not able to figure out how this topic is suited to a question and answer section...

A question and answer section clearly means
Member A asks about something to which others reply.

this topic and this one http://www.tamilbrahmins.com/questi...se-stop-violant-culture-among-young-boys.html

The two posts can and might have been posted in other section - Chit Chat or General Discussions....

Again, A Question and Answer section is purely and only for getting answers to certain questions/doubts etc...

Otherwise i do not see a need for this at all!!!

Amala darling, those images of sarees are so good.. I love bengal cotton and I do own a couple still, I used to live in Cal for nearly ten years.. :-) good taste dear..

ON the subject of would I buy silk sarees. ... I admit I do have a lot of silk sarees, my mom was fond of them so I was introduced to them, but also love the kanjeevaram cotton so much.. the next time I go I would like to buy silk which is woven from the discarded cocoon..

I am not going to sit here and lie that I feel guilty for owning so many but that was the trend but now I am more more into protecting of the environment and I recycle everything that can be recycled and reuse and very careful about not using too much plastic.. I not not bought leather bags on my own but was given one from all my friends at work when I left, I understand that I did not do the killing of that animal and it was not made just for me.. and moreover it was given to me with love so I am using it..

subhalakshmi madam

Your quote" I did not do the killing of that animal and it was not made just for me" seems a lame excuse.
Every non vegetarian also says the same.
When Maha periya Himself suggested that one should not support wearing these Silk sarees, it has a meaning in it.

Where Leather Comes From

Most leather comes from cattle who are slaughtered for meat, worn-out dairy cows who no longer produce enough milk to be profitable, and veal calves whose soft skin is particularly valuable. Each of these animals suffers a lifetime of cruel confinement and is ultimately harvested for their milk and/or flesh. They also suffer from overcrowding, weather extremes, and lack of food and water on the long trip to the slaughterhouse, with many dying on the way.

Praveen Sir

These questions posted by me were buried under other posts

My post about doubts about Navarathiri Kolu posted on 27/10/2012 in GD Forum still not yet answered by any and buried under many other posts although it was viewed by many.
Similarly my question on Different items of Abhishekam and its significance posted on 27/12/2012 still remains unanswered and buried under other posts.

(Most of the Abhishekams in Temples start with Oil, and ends with Viboothi or Milk;
Many items of abhishekams are used like, honey, pachamiratham, annam, flower, coins,Sandanam, Kunkumam etc
Wish to know the spiritual significance of each of the items used in Abhishekam and why most Abhishekams start with oil?)
208 viewed this

Another question regarding keeping different types of cereals before each Navagraha Deity, posted on 27/10/2012 still remains unanswered, although viewed by 119 viewers.

This is for your information.

Thank you. I love those bengal cottons myself. Its so pretty no? And not costly! I admit unless gifted i would struggle to justify spending on silks when these bengal handlooms seem just as pretty if not prettier for me.

My mum also has lots of silks and some of which i have worn. But i had no idea there are kanjeevaram cottons! are they as pretty as bengal cottons? i always thought only kanjeevaram silks!

Gadwals are very nice too but somehow they don't seem to "call" out to me to get them the way bengal handlooms do!! :D

I guessed it right! There is no need for a separate forum for Q and A because most of the threads in the G D forum

and Chit chat are like this. And, many thread takes several twists and turns towards other topics and some end up

in fights, finally get the 'brahma mudichchu' and hence :tape: !

Dear Amala,

Poly silk sarees are made of pure polyester threads and imitate pure silk sarees. There are many varieties similar to Kanjeepuram

silk, Banaras silk and brocade silk sarees. Some names of poly silks are Belgaum silk, ApoorvA silk, AparNa silk (my favorite) and a

few others. If we get the correct combination of colors, they look just like pure silk sarees. I have already written all the advantages.

I like cotton sarees when other lean persons wear them! :) I am lazy to maintain cotton sarees and hence do not buy them though

they are the best to wear in Sing. Chennai. I stitch simple cotton salwar sets to wear as night dress. I hate nighties!

I am not giving you or anyone any excuse for the way I live, I know who I am and I don't have to justify anything to anyone, I am a good human being period... if you don't like it does not matter to me, I don't seek approval of the world for my honesty or what I am.. I am who I am..

I know where the leather and silk come from, don't need a lesson from anyone for that matter. I am not ignorant.. I clearly said that my bag was given to me by my friends and therefore out of their love I am using it.. I am sure at one time or the other you have used leather slippers, have you used kholapuri slippers or anything like that, it is all leather.. I am not a leather lover I have never bought leather either, did you not read that...

Yeah Amala, you can enjoy kancheevaram cotton sarees, they mimic the silk sarees, of course you have to maintain it but these days cotton comes in different styles and pattern, even those I mentioned.. Yeah Bengal cotton is lovely how about Venkata giri sarees.. they are pretty too.I used to have a beautiful red with large gold border, my mom loved me in it.. :-) go to Nalli the next time, they have quite a variety of all those..

The temples should first do away with silk. Then hindus in general will take the cue and follow. Even the MP (Maha Pariyava) could not have made the various Temples to eschew silk for the idol or other uses, imo.

Raji Madam

What is that brahma mudichchu ?
Like to hear the story please.

Mr Praveen is right
by transferring these posts to Chit Chat section, i will be careful in posting appropriate questions in Q& A Section.. wait for it and Answer directly if YOU KNOW AN ANSWER

Raji Madam
Thanks for new new meaning given by you.
I thought Brahma muduchu means this:

1. Ego (I) 2. Maya( Illusion) 3. Karma( sin).
and these three threads are knotted together called the “Brahma muduchu” (Knot) .( poonal muduchu)

Thanks

Mr. PJ I too come from the same Sankaracharya group. But I am little bit more pragmatic. I do not have to accept everything said by any guru or Godman. I do have my intellect still with me.

My God the Brahman does not speak to me yet (or I am not able to hear him yet), so every advice is tested against my convictions.
So it does not matter it is Mr. PJ or Shankaracharya, they all have to pass my test.

When this topic was discussed, I expressed my view that a separate section is not needed.
I still believe that you do not need this section.

I agree with your statement.
We do not need to lectured on in a Q & A section.
Secondly posting One Opinion, as superior to others is totally against all social norms. You might have reverence for XYZ, but that does not make that opinion superior.

What seperate section? It's still in Chit Chat only! Anyway, I must have missed it.

Answer to the question... I will be able to stop buying silk sarees. Recently our son got married.. no silk sarees. None for anyone including the 'Cow Girl' ( maattup penn!:) ). ( i asked her to appear in jeans for 'sambandhi pojanam'... she refused and bought gagra....

Cheers!
