Your above sentences are mutually contradictory.

by the way, I can never buy the argument that salwar kameez does not look good on SIs. It can and it does... to many. There is no comparison between a Western woman and her sAri on this one. As all Indians are similarly structured, and thus Salwar Kameez can equally look good on a SI structure as it does to a NI. This is my view on it and I am not changing it.

10 yrs ago, I was slim and I used to sport a Blunt cut and wear Sleeveless tops and jeggings. I used to feel good in those too, not to mention a Salwar Kameez. Now that I have gained weight, I have resorted to loose jeans and long sleeved tops or Salwar kameez which I feel is form fitting and attractive at the same time, hiding all that hideous weight.

And, dressing should be left to personal choice and should never be 'dictated' to others.

I end presenting my views here.

Dear JR,

I will give an example...some women have big arms but beautiful long slim legs.

In fact most Indian women tend to have legs that are comparatively thin with the rest of the body.

So they can cover the arms and expose their legs a little with a short dress that ends just on the knee or may be a little above the knee.

So there is no need to cover up everything.

And for those who have not so flattering legs but slim arms they can opt to cover their legs and expose their arms with sleeveless or some thin strap top.

So its like a mix and match situation.

Also there is something call balancing the outfit for example if I am wearing a short dress like a little black sleeveless dress that ends above the knee ....in order to make it look less revealing..I drape a bright colored shawl around the shoulders if its a casual occasion I am attending.

If I am attending a formal occasion like a seminar/conference then I just wear a nice colored jacket over it and remove the shawl and make sure I choose a good pair of high heels cos short dresses look good with high heels.

So that way even a mini sleeveless dress can still look decent and be worn for both casual or formal occasions.

This is what I meant by no need to cover everything.

In fact the "no need to cover up everything" is a fashion tip given by most fashion magazines and shows.

BTW just to add...no one needs to change their opinion on anything here cos its just a friendly discussion and not a fierce debate with any prize. Everyone's opinion is equally valid in someway or the other.Life is not always a competition. So be cool. Cheers.

Dear Renu,

In Sing Chennai, most of the women like to wear tight fitting dresses not caring about the number of tires in the mid region!

Also short tops / tops with long side slits + leggings worn by many ladies make others :scared: .

Dear RR ji,

Tires need to be concealed by loose tops but sleeveless can be worn.

Also leggings should not be worn with short tops or tops with long slits cos even unsightly thigh shape is visible.

This is where people make mistakes in their dressing.

Out here we have a type of legging that is not tight but like a Arabian pants style with cuffs at the ankles.

It gives an Arabian pants style flowing well and can be worn over a Kameez or Short Kurti.

You are correct, Renu!

But many ladies here are the don't care types!

I know..even here we find pregnant females wearing tight figure hugging clothes..it does not really look all that flattering.

But out here there are many who display tires too but they feel that they do not need to hide tires and feel Au Natural!

Ok..even in those who do not have tires when we sit the body will have natural fold and give an impression of tires or a muffin top...so clothes should not be too tight even if we are slim..it has to be slightly loose so that no muffin top or pseudo- tire is seen when sitting.

Its all techniques.

Sing. Chennai tailors ask the customers whether the dress should be 'tight' or 'normal loose' or 'loose' !! :decision:

Dear Renuka,

I can't help but asking, when it comes to you, you being a SI, you will wear anything including a min-dress with a sleeveless, but for other SIs, even Salwar Kameez won't work in 1 sweeping statement by you, is it? :)

Dear JR,

Well I am not 100% a South Indian..only 50%.

But I do not like to wear Salwar Kameez cos I do not look good in it.

But I look good in short dresses.

BTW you have the right to disagree with me that it could be a sweeping statement. Its your opinion.

But I wonder why you feel as a South Indian one cant wear short dresses?

I am sure being in USA you would seen many?

BTW I still feel only Punjus look best in Salwar Kameez and SI look best in Sarees..let me add..Punju females look better in Salwar Kameez than a saree.

So its fair and square my dear.

Dear Renuka,

Now I see where the sweeping statement comes from... with confidence! ;-)

Here's my sweeping statement: Western clothes on Indian women only makes them look like Christians... to be more precise... Anglo-Indians - and this is ANY Indian woman. ;-)

I dont like Salwar Kameez as much as I feel a Saree makes me look much better and even my husband says I look much better in a saree.

Out here most people wear western clothes and no one mistakes anyone for a Christian or Anglo.

In fact when I was a student in India even my friends from TN used to be dressed in short dresses for parties and no one mistook us for Non Hindus.

BTW in life sometimes no one really can guess our religion at one glance...I have been mistaken to be a Muslim at times say 10% of times mostly by foreign workers from Bangladesh but 90% of the times people just know I am a Hindu. But when I was in India I was never ever mistaken to be a Christian or Muslim.

Only the very conservative ones our here in Msia think not wearing a Pottu= Muslim or Christian.

But all are humans..so its no big deal to be mistaken to be any religion.

dear JR...so you mean to say you never wear dresses or skirts to office? What about pant suits..that would look real good on a person in the corporate sector like you.

I can already imagine you taking the lead in a board meeting.

Dear Renuka,

We are far, far off from the OP's subject on 'Dhavanis'.... so let me make this quick, last reply on our topic here.

I really like Western clothes (very fond of them). 10 yrs ago I used to be very Americanized, I even used to wear swimwear. To office, I always wore 'career casual' - pants and tops except on Fridays when jeans was allowed.

But with age and weight gain, I've become very conservative. These days I like Salwar Kameezes and Saris better than anything else. My taste has definitely changed.

And I am fondly recalling my 'Dhavani days' in school... which I used to regret so much when I was a student back then. :)

Dear JR,

I have always been sort of sometimes traditional..sometimes modern.

I still wear swim wear cos I love swimming.I prefer 2 pieces one which comes in various types now.

I have worn sarees to work here when I used to work in the hospital before on days where I am not on call.

Nowadays I hardly wear sarees...and as I age I am losing interest in sarees and prefer pants with tops or short of full length dresses.

I do not like midi dresses...I prefer either full lengthdresses or short dresses above the knees.

There are long shirt type tops without sleeves that are imported from Nepal that are beautiful to be worn over pants to work.

Sometimes to work I wear the Malay traditional garment called the Baju Kurung..which is like this:
joanna-mirror-print-baju-kurung-black.jpg

So I like a variety of various types of clothes and I also like long dresses to work at times..for example like this...its very comfy..

long-dresses-with-sleeves-maximaxi-dress-with-thigh-split-long-sleeve-maxis-view-long-sleeve-djq2zwmw.jpg

After work I dress with shorter clothes ..but over all I am a conservative person.
