Ambassador maker Hindustan Motors to launch small car

Hindustan Motors, a C K Birla group company, is gearing up for the launch of a small car in the next fiscal, its MD and CEO Uttam Bose said on Tuesday.

The new sub-four meter small car will be manufactured on the Ambassador platform and will be only in sedan variant.

"The new car will be cheaper than the Ambassador because of its smaller length, which will attract less excise duty. However, its name is yet to be finalized," Bose said.

The initiative is a step towards revival of the company's fortunes, he said.

We have small cars like Hyundai Santro, Nissan Micra, Volks Wagen Polo, Maruthi 800, Ford Figo, etc

Let us wait and see as to how the Junior of Ambassador rules the Road,

With regards
:)

What happened to Nano the flag ship product from the TATA stable that was launched with much fanfare as a budget car ...Understand that dwindling sales is making them reposition the car as smart car

Ambassador moving into small car is welcome as there is a huge market for cars in India with middle class with motor cycles/scooters will prefer to upgrade to a small car..

Sir,

You are right, TATA's Nano was omitted by oversight.

In the year 2009 with great expectations, Tata Nano, the world's cheapest car was launched. The initiative was mainly to attract price sensitive buyers who wanted to own a new vehicle. Sources have claimed that the firm is planning to revive its fortunes by launching diesel and CNG versions, While the CNG variant is expected to hit the market this October, Tata Nano diesel could be introduced in India in 2014.

With regards

Hindustan Motors started with Morris Minor 10 a small car in 1949. Now again they are going into small car, a full circle indeed.

Hindustan Motors (HM) was in a deep slumber for the last 3 decades ...How come they endured all the assaults on its Market share starting with Maruti in the 80's followed by a wave of car manufacturers set up post liberalization with Hyundai, Mitsubishi, Honda, Toyota etc launching swanky cars with latest features...And TATA too has come out with several cars...HM-Better late than never...Hope it succeeds!

Dear Sri "Vgane",

No Sir, Hindustan Motors never in deep slumber. They were continuously in production. their brand leader "Ambassador" has emerged as the car mass-produced for the longest number of years, with minimal design changes, on the same assembly line (Uttarpara,West Bengal,India) in the whole world (1958- 2013 and still going strong). No other car made in the world has surpassed this record. ( I am not sure whether Volkswagen coceived by Adolf Hitler has this record) Ambassador cars enjoy the patronage of the Palace. It was the ராஜாவீட்டு கன்னுக்குட்டி with continuous Government patronage. There is a saying that "Ambassador Cars and Indian roads are made for each other". Another one " before buying Ambassador Car, better check your Horoscope for compatiblity with the car", because each unit will have its own tempermental behaviour". When "Mitsubishi" wound up their out dated models, they found a buyer in HML and passed the models to them.Their "Pajero SUV" is an instant success. Hindustan Motors went into joint ventures with automobile giants all over the world including General Motors of USA, (Trucks), TEREX and Caterpillar of USA, Fermac of UK for Earth moving Equipments, Zetor of Czechoslovakia for tractors, and their Contessa Cars had Isuzu Engines.
It has a colourful History.

Dear Sir,

I meant actually Ambassador car manufactured by HM in deep slumber...It was once called as king of roads and was ruling the roost till the early 80's...Till then Premier Padmini (Fiat) and Ambassador were the only two cars on Indian roads...Come Maruthi & it changes the rules of the game...Customers were exposed to sleakier and fuel efficient cars

The whole of 2011 only 2500 Ambassador cars were sold...It was once the car of the Babus with almost 15% of the sale to Government bodies...That also changed post the Vajpayee era...The nail in the coffin came with the launch of Indiac from the TATA's which is now being used as Taxies The Ambassador taxis have also been taken off the roads in 2011 because of failure to meet stringent pollution norms

The failure of Ambassador is because they took the customer for granted..The price close to Rs 5.0 lacs is also exhorbitant...There was hardly any variant that could be called as catching the eye of the customer...Now it is only a marginal player

HM has a huge land bank in Uttarapara in Bengal which they can use for small car...Hope this clarifies

Ambassador cars had an enviable market when they were on rate contract with government organizations; almost all vehicles purchased by central and state governments were 'ambassador'. Even today most of the taxis in tamilnadu are ambassador. I have seen rows of ambassador taxis parked in thatched shed in tiruchy and madurai even last year.

BS IV norms for Emission in 4 wheelers came into force wef 1st April 2010 ...These were rolled out in National Capital Region ie Delhi & surrounding areas + 13 identified cities viz Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Pune, Surat, Kanpur, Lucknow, Sholapur, Jamshedpur and Agra

Trichy & Madurai are not part of the list...Hence you find Ambassador taxis still being used

Ram prefers Ambassador cab even today because of the high seat and low chassis - easy to get in and out!

I wonder whether it is because he was with H M, Calcutta, for a decade and after a break, for 8 years in Sing. Chennai!

I too prefer Ambassidor.eventhough 'bit' hard to drive.. No power power steering.. It was very reliable in long distance travel..highly suitable for IndianRoad condition..I have driven it in worst roads of western ghat..
