Are we Brahmins shrinking in quality, uniqueness and number?

Dear Sri V. Balasubramani Ji,

Thank you for encouraging Sri bsnlmouli Ji.

This is a Forum for all, on all subjects, and all opinions are welcome, well reasoned or not. There are very learned members here, with very varied view points and we hope that it creates an atmosphere where value can be added to our community.

All of our voices have the same validity in the Forum, which happened thanks to the owner of this Forum site, Sri Praveen.

KRS

Sri bsnlmouli Sir. I should thank you for this thread though it happened to be your first thread. I am an ‘L’ Board member of this Forum. But the responses to your thread from Veterans are really thought provoking. IMO What is important is getting the best from these Mahanubhavulu (viz.the Members, Senior Members, Veterans, Senior Moderator,etc.etc). I tend to change my habit of reading the Dailies in the morning to going thro’ the postings of this Forum which I enjoy. Now news paper became my second priority. Keep it up.

P.S: IMO though there is no teasing/ragging thing here, beginers need to be more careful while posting their opinion. Natural, cos you deal with big guns.

I hope members dont take me wrong by saying this but among all the types of Brahmins I have been exposed too..mostly Tamil Brahmins are the ones who are most worried about shrinking in numbers and qualities etc.

Other Brahmins seem "cool" and not too concerned about this.

I really wonder why??

Brahmins in the other states of India are esteemed high, honoured, respected, regarded and are hardly persecuted or troubled as in Tamil Nadu.

Parallels of Dravidar Kazhagam (who rode on and survive on an illusory 'dravida' sentiment which has fooled the non-brahmins in tamilnadu) could hardly be found.

In the other states, most of the non-brahmins adjust with brahmins and aspire to emulate the brahmin way of life.

On the contrary, in TN, brahmins need to adjust with and adapt to other's style of living to tide against the anti-brahmin wave that swept the state since ascent of dravidian political powers. Unlike other states, brahmins are being sidelined, dishonored in TN.

In the other states it is a matter of pride, honor being a brahmin. In TN brahmins tread with fear.

This is something really serious!

Most of the tambrams do not like to follow the traditional way of life. They think that doing the nithya karmAs

is a burden in their routine. The girls are scared of madi and AchAram and want to be free from all these! I too

have had many scary experiences with the strict madi, AchAram in Ram's village house. While searching for a

groom or bride, the horoscope plays a very important role and no two astrologers agree to each other! This

might be the reason for many I C and I R weddings happening in tambram society! This also is a main cause of

worry, because after two generations, it might be difficult to find the so-called pure tambram descendants! :spy:

For brahmin girls of the current century, money, wealth, fame, prosperity, prestige, pride is of prime importance than brahmin culture, tradition, way-of-life etc. Hence they marry men of other castes.

For brahmin men of the current century, one who would supplement their salary, who would help add to their luxury and extravagance, who is externally beautiful regardless of character or conduct and many other superficialities are of greater priority and caste takes a back seat or no seat at all.

Perhaps hence deterioration and decay in brahmin way of life and a dwindle in pristine brahmin blood.

Shri Balasubramani,

AFAI am concerned, there is no need for beginners to be careful about veterans and all that as long as you write sincerely. Just my 2 cents please.

Wow, Sri Sastri Ji!

You seem to be prone towards generalizations about people, countries etc., even though your data points of you reaching such conclusions are scant to nil.

'Pristine brahmin blood'! In what century are you living sir? This smacks of the 'pure Aryan blood'. What do you know about the brahmin blood to be 'pristine'?

Can you back up your conclusions with proper data analysis and studies? Thank you.

KRS

Sir, True. That advise of mine to beginners is only as a matter of caution bcos most of the subjects dealt with are of highly sensitive in nature

So what if it is the case that Brahmins by patriarchal birth heritage are decreasing, but Brahmins by education, training, wisdom, scientific, literary and artistic training are increasing? Is that a sign of Kali Yuga?

Sir, Please excuse me. IMHO it was patriachal once. Does this hold good even today? Cos here, in most of the families, I see mamas are considered only as a dummy pieces and have no say in the family, best used for second fiddeling. They are sparingly, comfortably used as scape goat whenever the opportunity arises. (Thank God they earn ,lest......?). Besides children of nowdays, they think better and wish to be independent. The pendulum is supposed to swing. Is that too a sign of Kali yuga?

I feel Yuga does not influence anyone.

By blaming all ill effects on Kali Yuga we will never rectify our behavior and just find an excuse for our behavior.

It is not as if Kali Yuga is like some virus which infects humanity.

Human thoughts, words and deed evolve and adapt over time.

Our thoughts, words and deed shape the era and not the other way round.

I feel as humans we should at least be brave enough to admit that "yes I am wrong..yes I am bad " instead of trying to act innocent by blaming the Yuga for influencing our mind.

That is no different from some religions that blame the Devil for every wrong deed!

The problem I have today with following rituals, is that, when I look at folks who are known to me and who are practicing such rituals, the majority are not basically good human beings. They cheat and lie and are corrupt. I am not saying, mind you that all of them are like that, but a solid majority are. This list includes members of my immediate family.

Based on the above statement, it is not clear why you have problem with rituals. You should have problem only with the cheats, the liars, and the corrupt. If you are somehow trying to show a causative relationship between rituals and lack of ethics, I do not think your argument will hold.

Nothing to do with helping the society, which was the only reason the concept of Brahmins came about, and not even for attaining Moksha, which is a noble personal goal.

Perhaps those brahmins are following the rituals out of selfish interests. But their practice is still useful in the sense that it is keeping the system alive and therefore hope for a better future, as you imagine the past, remains.

Dear Sri Kala Bairavan Ji, (sorry I don't have the keys to type in Tamil, and so I apologize),

You are correct. I was not clear.

I said I have no problems with folks who believe in pursuing Purva Mimamsa as a means to an end.

It is a personal thing with me - I do not need any Punyam - I wanna be liberated. Besides, my knowledge of Sanskrit is close to zero, and I would rather look at other Darshanas for myself. Just my make up.

I am in no way discrediting Purva Mimamsa. If folks want to accrue just punyam and do well in their next birth, I have no problems with that either - I only have problems with folks who follow it to get punyam in a fraudulant way.

I am sure for lots of folks, it is a disciplining and cleansing tool.

Hope this explains.

KRS

shri.KRS, looking forward to see your post in Tamil :)

Step 1) load this url ????????? ???????? ????????? ??????? ?????????????? ? ???????? ? Google ????????? ????????

step 2) Type in English pad KAALA BAIRAVAN , you would land up with கால பைரவன் . For certain words google will give few more word choices, which are close sounding to the typed text, which you may chose the right one by pull down menu.

In case its difficult to tag/remeber this url, you may load google and type TAMIL + GOOGLE+ TRANSLITERATION, you would land in there.

Sorry ShivKC Sir..... I can't stop giving ideas!! :D

If we have a gmail account, there are options to type in different languages in the 'compose box'!

Just select 'Tamil phonetic' fonts and pichchu odhaRify in Tamil. That's what we do!
:typing:

Lesson: :)

a, aa /A, i, ii / I, u, uu / U, e, E ( ee = ii), ai, o, O (oo = uu), au are for the uyir ezhuththus. H =

k, ng, ch, jn, t, N, th, n, p, m, y, r, l, v, zh, L, R, n are for the mey ezhuththus.

Though na is for ந and ன, the software is smart enough to type ந, if it comes in the beginning of a word!

The sanskrit fonts
ஷ், ஸ், ஹ், ஸ்ரீ are got by typing sh, S, h and sri respectively!

So.......... open an gmail account if you do not have one right now!

P.S: Probably you missed my post written to Sangom Sir to avoid the umpteen ??????????

Here it is for your reference:

Gossip expands, especially when females are in the ring.

This is an old joke:

Q: What are the three rapid ways of spreading a news?
A: Telegraph (defunct), telephone, tell-a-woman. 2 & 3 form a deadly combination!!

Dear Sis,

I have not heard so many என்ன?s

They are either two or three only! :D
