Cyclone Nivar: Chennai to witness extremely heavy rainfall, NDRF on standby​

Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will witness isolated extremely heavy rainfall on November 24 and 25, the IMD has said.

Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall as Cyclone Nivar is expected to cross Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coasts, between Karaikal in Puducherry and Mamallapuram in Tamil Nadu, on the afternoon of November 25. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) in a bulletin stated that the depression over southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm over the next 24 hours.

The IMD has predicted widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal from November 24 to November 26. Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will witness isolated extremely heavy rainfall on November 24 and 25. On November 25, especially, Tamil Nadu is predicted to receive rainfall at most places, with heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places.

CHENNAI: With memories of the damage caused by Cyclone ‘Vardah’ in the city
and neighbouring districts still afresh, government departments are readying contingency plans to face Cyclone ‘Nivar’. The meteorological department has said that Nivar may make a landfall on Wednesday. The Regional Meteorological Centre has forecast wind speeds to be in the range of 100-110km an hour.

தீவிர புயலானது ‘நிவர்’- இந்திய வானிலை ஆய்வு மையம் எச்சரிக்கை​

தென்மேற்கு வங்கக் கடலில் உருவான நிவர் புயல் தற்போது தீவிர புயலாக வலுப்பெற்றுள்ளது.

இந்நிலையில், புயலின் தற்போதைய நகர்வு குறித்து இந்திய வானிலை ஆய்வு மையம் கூறியுள்ளதாவது:

தென்மேற்கு வங்கக் கடலில் உருவான நிவர் புயல் தற்போது தீவிர புயலாக வலுப்பெற்றுள்ளது. அடுத்த சில மணி நேரங்களில் இது அதி தீவிர புயலாக மாறும். அப்போது 155 கி.மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் காற்று வீசக்கூடிய வாய்ப்பு உள்ளது.

கடந்த 6 மணி நேரத்தில் வடக்கு மற்றும் வட மேற்கு நோக்கி 6 கி.மீட்டர் வேகத்தில் நகர்ந்து வருகிறது. இரவு 11.30 மணிக்கு கடலூருக்கு 310 கி.மீட்டர் தொலைவிலும், புதுவைக்கு 320 கி.மீட்டர் தொலைவிலும் இருந்தது. சென்னைக்கு 380 கி.மீட்டர் தொலைவில் நகர்ந்து வருகிறது.

இவ்வாறு இந்திய வானிலை ஆய்வு மையம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

‘Preparing for worst’, says NDRF chief as Cyclone Nivar nears​

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has said that they are preparing for worst as ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm Nivar is hurtling towards the Tamil Nadu coast.​

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has said that they are preparing for worst as ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm Nivar is hurtling towards the Tamil Nadu coast.

“Cyclone Nivar is categorised as ‘very severe’. With this perspective, we’re preparing for worst. Our teams have been on the ground for last twodays. Till now, 25 teams been deployed through Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Andhra Pradesh,” NDRF director general SN Pradhan said, according to news agency ANI.
