# 126. Attract with light!

images

An amazing shot of a black skimmer in action
and its reflection by Mr. Alan Wilson.

Fishermen and the anglers use light to attract the fish at night. A bird uses the same technique more subtly though!

The bird called skimmer uses the minute marine creatures in the same way.

The skimmer usually hunts in the coastal waters during the evenings and bright nights.

It flies just above the water with the tip of its longer lower beak skimming through the surface of water.

As the bird forages forwards and backwards, it leaves a path of the disturbed phosphorescent micro organisms.

This will attract more fish to come nearer to the surface.
After catching the prey, the skinner snaps shut its beak with knife edges holding on to the food. It swallows the catch during its flight.

Since it flies so close to the water surface it has developed a unique style of flying! Its wings never drop below the horizontal- lest the fish be warned of the lurking danger in the form of the bird!

Skimmer bird is the ONLY bird with its lower beak larger and longer than its upper beak.

It is very convenient for skimming for fish and snap-shutting once the prey is caught.

# 127. Why do the birds not fall down when they sleep?

anatomy_diagram_perched_tendon2_reed_wiki.jpg

The red color denotes the tendons which help the birds to stay perched and not fall off! Diagram Courtesy Google Images.

The perching birds use a locking system to stay on their perches.

Tendons pass from the muscle at the back of the bird's leg, down round the back of its ankle and to the inside of its toes.

When a bird settles it weight on a branch, its legs bend. The tendons are tightened and the toes automatically grip the perch tightly.

Even when the bird falls asleep, there is no danger of its falling off the perch.

As soon as the bird straightens its legs or jumps from the perch, the tendon relaxes and the grip of the toes is released.

# 128. Double standards.

The red kangaroo can produce two different kinds of milk from the adjacent teats at the same time!

The tiny joey is attached to one of the teats. The other teat is available to feed the joey who had just left the pouch.

The elder brother is given richer milk to suit his needs.
The milk offered to the elder joey is 33% percent higher in proteins and 400 % higher in fats!

129. Built-in- chopsticks.

images

The aye-aye and its "chopsticks"!
Courtesy Google images.

The aye-aye - a rare lemur from Madagascar- has its own built-in-chopsticks in its front paws.

Its middle fingers are so thin and long that they resemble chopsticks.

The aye-aye uses them to eat with. it dips them one at a time into the pulp of the fruits. It lifts the finger and sucks off the juice. It even drinks water the same way.

its main food is wood boring insects. It locates the insects by listening with its big ears.

It then gnaws the bark until it can insert its long finger to extract its prey.

# 130. Quads Made to order!

images

The female of the nine banded armadillo regularly bears litter of identical quadruplets.

In the other mammals, the babies in a single litter are formed from different eggs. But these quadruplets come from the same egg.

The egg splits during the development and produced identical quadruplets.

The whole litter is always of the same sex- as if made to order.

# 131. The great sleep.

images

A woodchuck. Courtesy Google images.

The wood chucks of North America sleep for two thirds of the year. They are active only for four months in the summer.

As the days begin to shorten, the woodchucks eat far more than their normal amount of food. The excess food is converted in to "brown fat" and is stored in its body.

When the fat stored becomes about one seventh of the body weight of the woodchuck, it retreats into its burrow and becomes torpid.

It allows its body temperature to drop along with that of the surroundings until it may be very close to the freezing point.

The temperature sensors continue to work and the temperature of the brain is kept up.

If about to freeze, some of the brown fat is used up to raise the body temperature rapidly.

When the spring arrives, the remaining brown fat is used up to bring the body temperature back to normal.

Neivedyam and Anna Danam - Kanchi Mahaperiyaval's Desire

A handful of rice must be set apart every morning in every house for the poor and the
needy along with some money. Every House must sincerely do this everyday without
fail. The rice thus kept in the houses can be collected by somebody and handed over
to the nearest temple in that locality with a request to cook them and offer it as Neivedyam
to the Deity. The money saved along with the rice in the houses can also be collected
and handed over to the Temple for the preparation of side dishes and towards preparation
fee to the person who is undertaking this assignment. This will be a great service to
the poor and needy and also to the God.

Dear Sis,

Please request your forum Anna to post relevant topics in each thread!

Y does MahA PeriyavAs advice appear in this thread?

It could at least go to 'Thought of the day' or 'Q. Q'. Don't you think so?

I have learned my lesson.

# 132. Teeth of life.

images

An African elephant tooth. Courtesy google Images.

The permanent teeth in most mammals develop about the same time. But the twenty four molar teeth of an elephant grow in succession!

When the animal is young the first two molar teeth in each side of the upper and lower jaw are in use.

Successive teeth grow, move forward from the rear and come into use as the previous ones are worn out and lost.

By the time the elephant is 45 years old, the last four teeth are in full use. The rest of the teeth have been lost.

These teeth are 12 inches long and weigh 9 pounds each.Huge ridges on the teeth help the elephant to chew the quarter ton of rough plant food per day.

By the time it is 65 years old, the last set of teeth wear away and the animals living in wilderness face starvation since they can't chew food any more.

If our tongue is germ free, it is pink in colour, while if it is white, there

Look at the BIG eyes and the wobbly legs.
They make the joey both attractive and vulnerable!

images

Is it not amazing that this helpless, small, pink,
transparent piece of jelly with nothing but a
BIG mouth, grew up into the joey?

Thanks to the unknown benefactor.
yes naturally! People throng to read the posts
but fail to register their appreciation!
Well it is a point to ponder!
And after pondering for a while,
I will have to say, " Life is like that!!!"

Now you should be happy dear Sis, seeing 5

# 133. Family of millions!!!

images

Mom and kids. Courtesy Google Images.

Rabbits can breed very rapidly. A female can produce a litter of 9 young ones after a gestation period of 31 days. :flock:

She can become pregnant almost immediately and produce up to six litters in a year. :bump2:

If a pair of rabbits bred to their maximum capacity with no loss of the offspring, they could produce a family more than 33 million animals with in three years!
