The tiny ruby throated humming bird defies the laws of physics.

It propels its tiny body weighing just an ounce or 3.5 grams on a non-stop-flight of 500 miles from the North America across the Gulf of Mexico to the South America, each autumn.

It is too small to store the energy required for the non-stop flight but it manages quite well.

It flies back again in the spring.

# 140. The sun seeker.

The sun loving Arctic tern makes the longest possible migration -from the top of the world to the bottom and back.

Each year its round trip is ~ 22,000 miles (32,000 k.m.)
It lives its entire life where the day is the longest.

It breeds in the unbroken daylight of the Arctic summer. It flies back with the sun to feed in the nearly endless day of the Antarctic Summer.

It can cover more than 100 miles (160k.m) a day on an average.

I  the cute little humming birds and their musical hum sounding like the sruthi!

One particular humming bird used to come quite close to my face everyday, almost at the same time, when I was with my elder son in 2010.

If one comes again this time, I can enjoy the hum with my very very musical grand daughter :ear:

Nature is very artistic and matches colors wonderfully.

The arctic tern lives in a snowy place with a clear blue sky.

Look at it the color of its feathers and how well they will merge

with the place the bird lives.

Some persons remind me of my own relatives due some inexplicable reasons.

Mr. Naina! you remind me of my romantic short-story writer chittappa Mr. K.N.Subramanian.

He was very handsome with a long mustache and a lot of curly hair. (Am I by any chance describing you accurately - even without seeing you?)

He would always reading or writing. He used to call my son Rajesh as Brujesh! :)

And like every Mr. Subramanian I know, he too was quick to react.

Peyar visesham???
:noidea:

This is a sphinx-like statement. ...what are 'the other things' ? The adjective or the noun? Or the gender?
Dear Sis,

Naina Sir equated the statement to sphinx and not you!!

Google search gave me the result for sphinx-like as:

adjective ... like the Sphinx; enigmatic or inscrutable

NOW I believe that you were really complimenting.

It was your words " a new bragging point" that made me

doubt the real meaning of your compliment. :suspicious:

So you acted :boink:
and I reacted! :croc:

So it seems.

Which means "No more hard feelings on either side!"

Is that O.K. now? :tea:

I thought I was complimenting. Sorry, if you took it amiss. A man never learns enough.

Every person who writes in this form can not log in every day!

They might be busy with many other activities too!

# 141. The Annual trip.

Each year the short tailed shear-waters make a five months long and 20,000 miles long round.

They breed on the islands of Bass straight between Australia and Tasmania.

In mid April, the flock young and old set out on their annual trip to the pacific coasts - visiting Japan, Alaska, Canada and Fiji

They return to the Bass straight in the last few days of September.

They go off to feed and return around 20th November and start breeding. The next annual trip will start in mid April again.

# 142. Butterfly flutter by!

Using their own wing power, many species
of butterflies can travel up to 600 miles (1000 k.m) non-stop!

Some can even fly across the Atlantic ocean from North America to Europe making use of the prevailing westerly winds.

Monarch butterflies are capable of crossing the Atlantic ocean non-stop under favorable wind and weather conditions.

The heart begins beating at four weeks after conception and does
not stop until the death. A new born baby has around a cup of blood in
circulation, while an adult has around four to five quarts, which the heart
pumps to all the tissues and to and from the lungs in about a minute while
beating around 70 to 75 times. A woman's heart typically beats faster than
a man's. The heart of an average man beats approx. 70 times a minute
while on an average, a woman has a heart rate of 78 times per minute.

# 143. The marching munchers.

images

Queen attended by the soldiers during migration

The voracious soldier ants are restless nomads - marching across the land in a perpetual migration.

Workers carry the eggs, larvae and the food. At night the whole army forms a huge ball with their own bodies.

The queen, the eggs and the young ones will be safe at the center of the ball.

They may camp for 3 weeks in a place. Foragers pick clean the surrounding area eating plants, spiders, vermin and even household pets.

The scouts locate a new spot and the army marches on!

The tiniest insect has a spirit of social unity besides unbelievable unselfish
unity. Ants share everything they get. Further, they have a sense of
discipline, which is really amazing to watch. Above all, they save for the
period when they cannot get food. Are we enlightened by this fact!
