We have to get rid of 'bad money' from cinema too: Venkaiah

November 20, 2016 20:29

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu today called for cleaning of "bad money" from all spheres of life, including cinema.

"I understand there will be bad money everywhere... In every part of the society, in politics, in public life and even in cinema. We need to get rid of it so that we can have peaceful life and we can have a progressive future," he said addressing the inaugural function of International Film Festival of India in Goa.

"This cleansing set in motion by the prime minister should add good to the film industry also. I am happy that the first people to welcome the move of the prime minister are from the cinema industry. They have welcomed it," Venkaiah added.

Calling the demonetisation move a success, he said the money has to be white so one can really sleep well.

"But today you have seen the position, some people are not able to sleep or weep publicly because they have lot of unaccounted money, so cleaning of India is going on," said the Minister.

[h=1]Demonetisation to root out corruption? How Singapore, others, gained from such a move[/h][h=2]One can take some cues from the benefits such a move has yielded to some countries, like Singapore[/h]
Demonetisation of currency notes of R500 and R1,000 is a show stopper moment in India’s history. This move is one chord that touched every Indian much like the notes themselves which were once part of every wallet. As the elephantine exercise of remonetising the ATMs and banks with the newer currency unfolds, it exposes the severe inconveniences people have to undergo. However, for any status quo to change, short term inconvenience has to be viewed in light of the long term vision. If implemented in the right earnest, this single move has the ability to transform and remodel the economic as well as social mindset about the country.

Demonetisation will clearly have far reaching consequences across sectors. Real estate and jewellery segments are likely to witness a significant disruption. Particularly for the real estate segment, which drives the economy to a great extent, the impact could be seen in the form of correction in prices in the short- to medium-term, both in the primary and secondary markets. Coupled with the implementation of RERA, this could set in motion a cleansing exercise for this sector. If these moves are implemented effectively, the Indian realty sector could be on par with the global players. The PM has indicated intent to address black money parked in real estate and jewellery as well. In all probabilities, the clamp down on black money sought through these measures will trigger a spiralling clean-up exercise over the next few years.

The move is also positive in recapitalising the balance sheets of banks which have been reeling under the pressure of rising non-performing assets (NPA). With more money deposited in banks, one should look at a lower interest rate cycle in the medium-term, pushing down inflation levels and enlarging credit growth. Secondly, the tax revenues mopped up through this process will help improve government finances which should push up spending on infrastructure, medical facilities, defence and education. The increase in private, as well as government spending, is likely to lead to growth in employment opportunities.

It is very easy to assume that people have bank accounts. Then again a lot of bank accounts are inactive. In Rural areas there are no convenient banks. For a migrant farm worker without their own transport a bank may well be in another continent.
Somehow I feel that people assume that everybody has same facility like themselves. That is not factual.

TKSji,
Do you know that many American do not have bank account. Walmart & other convenience store charge 2% check cashing fee. Some of my employees tell me that $40.00 check costs them $3.00 (the minimum charge) to cash it. Sometimes I cash it for them at no charge. This is USA and not rural India.
So Modiji planned everyone to have bank account. Yes a lofty idea, is it feasible? Not by a mile.

Prasad ji -

More than 45% of eligible voters in America do not vote either. They have no sense of civic duty for a so called advanced nation.

There will be some tough time and India will come out of it fine. But many more Indians will get bank accounts. Till 2000 most people were not aware of internet in India. Today I have seen beggers having a cell phone and cell phone service across India is lot better than many places in the USA. Necessity will drive the required action and adoption.

To root out the corruption cancer, this is the first dose of Chemo given. The patient will suffer but will get better and do well in about a year or so. I do not trust the media outlets who write as if they cry for the poor. It is like that Tamil proverb where the wolf was worried and shed tears that the lamb may not get enough food to eat.

I think any bold move will have negative consequences. No one in India's history since Independence has taken bold moves. There is a possibility of failure but I am optimistic that this is but the first step in a series of steps to get India to become a super power in our life time

Well said Shri TKS Ji

I see a lot of wishful thinking by people with their feet off the ground.

India is primarily a cash economy, and if we could somehow bracket it into the ABC category, the B & C category who are much in numbers, but not bigger than A in %, would be the primary sufferers due to the poor implementation.

To operate and maintain a cashless economy, the people should be literate and know about banking basics. Transactions should be seamless throughout the country with very negligible disruptions. This requires that across the country, e-banking and e-commerce services are provided without bandwidth choke.

All the departments should go digital and avoid paper documents as there is a danger of losing the trail of transaction. There should be synchronization among the various facets of functional departments that could enable such a large scale operation without any internal / external threats.

All this in a country that has the majority in rural areas and who have scant idea of net banking, credit/debit cards and related security aspects. Then again, when people are accustomed to wilful default on loans, swiping a credit card and accumulating the liability is an easy matter. It is not an easy matter to scrutinize and organize credit default procedures on the larger majority in our very populous country; the cost of operations would soon emerge as a black hole.

All this in a country that is known for rampant corruption in every aspect of life. It is a well known fact that the government machinery (system) is run by power factions that would resort to extortion given the opportunity.

All this in a country that is not able to provide adequate power, water, transport and communication facilites to its people.

All this in a country that is unable to address and resolve current disputes in sharing of natural resources.

There are several grassroot steps that were required to be taken before introducing such a step. The few who reside in metros and thrive on internet and e-banking would thump their chest acknowledging a false triumph that rises, like the transient rainbow, in their minds.

Also there has been some rumours about limiting the amount of gold to 625 grams per family. If this were true, it is such a ludicruous step - another nail on the coffin to bury the average citizen.

Get real people. Brush off the chip of euphoria that is sitting on the shoulders for it is a demon disguised in the form of demonetisation.

Dear Auh,

Let us not focus too much on the execution because firstly the objective is of lot more importance than execution especially when it is done by the formidable machinery of a government and secondly any flaws in execution can be corrected in due course.

The most relevant questions are:

Does the Indian citizen want the country to be free of black money??
Does he want it to be corruption free?
Does he want a government that is trying to genuinely address the problems of the country?

If so, one will support the government in its initiatives. The exercise has just started and why should one cry foul immediately? Let us wait and give the government the support and time it deserves

Hi Sravna, planning is of no use unless the execution is done well. And sometimes the nature and means of execution do reflect on the efficacy of planning.

Lofty ideals and planning is like a dream that dissolves upon waking if the execution is not well laid.

Public deposited Rs 5.12 lakh crore in banks and exchanged old currency notes worth Rs 33,000 crore since November 10

Source:RBI

She has to deposit that after opening an account...No questions asked till Rs 2.5 lacs
Banks are so busy managing the crowd that no one helps to open new accounts. Even the illiterates, who have an account,

find it difficult to withdraw money. BTW, which bank gives 2.5 lakhs in one go? :noidea:

I have gone twice to one of the nearby banks and could get only half of what they promised, viz. Rs. 12,000/-

But, there is also a roumour that some smart guys print only one wedding invitation and try to grab 2.5 lakhs!

What an idea, Sir Ji!!

Unexpected support from Bihar CM Nitish! Excellent!

[h=1]PM Narendra Modi 'Bravely Riding A Tiger', Says Nitish Kumar On Notes Ban[/h]
Manish Kumar
November 21, 2016

Nitish Kumar is resolute about standing apart from the rest of the Opposition about Prime Minister Narendra Modi's decision to outlaw 500 and 1000-rupee notes. "Prime Minister Modi is now riding a tiger which could damage his alliances, but there's great sentiment in favour of his move and we should respect that," said Mr Kumar, who is the Bihar Chief Minister, to his party leaders.

On November 8, PM Modi said that just a few hours later, the high-denomination notes would be pulled from circulation as part of his commitment to ridding India of black money and corruption. The Opposition, which has broadly expressed its support for the cause, has united to indict the government for failing to protect the poor who were left cashless by the sudden move. The government has argued that without the element of total surprise, the reform would have been ineffective.

Last week, Mr Kumar, usually averse to praise for the PM, said that Prime Minister Modi had his "full support" on demonetisation, though his party members hastened to stress that the Chief Minister is concerned about the hardship that rural India has been placed under. 86% of the cash in circulation comprised of the notes that have been banned, and lakhs excluded from the banking system are now stranded, including farmers.

"The party will not hesitate to highlight these inadequacies," the Chief Minister assured his party yesterday. He said that he will continue to urge PM Modi to crackdown next on benami or proxy-owned property, where black money is invested in huge amounts.

Auhji,
Spot on.

I do not have a bank account in India. We were travelling in India on vacation. A family member gave a demand draft of Rs 50,000. I went to state bank in Chennai (The issuing bank). I had my passport, but they refused to cash it. I asked my cousin to come to the bank, another trip, he has an account with them, but they still refused. My SIS-IN-Law who is a big shot in some local school had to be brought in, she knew the manager, then and only then DD was cashed. I lost one day in the process. It is not easy to bank in India.
The haves have no idea how the have-nots live.

Totally agree with you Prasadji, SBI is the one and only bank which is capable of giving you nightmares. Even their online services are so badly managed one would easily get shocks for his lifetime. Private banks are far better and giving a run for their money to the nationalized ones.

A bank was looted by unidentified gunmen in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Monday. The gunmen entered the Jammu and Kashmir Bank branch at Charari-e-Sharif in Budgam and robbed Rs 12 lakhs from it, police said.

Bank employees alerted the police after the incident happened. Further investigations are in progress.
Earlier, three masked men had looted a bank of Rs 2.25 lakh in Kulgam district on October 25.

yes. i will endure with patience any necessary hardship for the welfare of the nation- if it is for the welfare of the nation.

i have two plastic cards that have enough money to keep me going well beyond the 50 day wait ( number of days of course subject to change). since my needs are minimal, the petty cash (princely cash nowadays) consisting of 100,50,10 denominations too are fairly adequate in my cupboard.
dutifully i have deposited 500, 1000 Rs notes in the bank- the amount i keep aside every month so that i can pay my staff in cash.
i can afford to be patiently patriotic, unlike my staff who will have to struggle to change the paper i give them into usable currency. i dare not ask them to cry 'jaihind'.
i am not an economist to analyze the policy and its long-term impact. i am a person dealing with persons everyday and i see the pain and frustration growing in my fellow-people.
i dont see any violent outburst as people have become too dumb and too numb.
i wish i can say jaihind.

Hi Sravna, planning is of no use unless the execution is done well. And sometimes the nature and means of execution do reflect on the efficacy of planning.

Lofty ideals and planning is like a dream that dissolves upon waking if the execution is not well laid.
There was tremendous planning and execution , not just planning only. The roll out of the policy was super because there was total element of surprise. There are some execution areas that cannot be worked out without revealing the surprise element which is key to a strategic execution.

There is calculated suffering and the country will overcome it all. Having seen India's progress from a far away place I have a different perspective. I have seen tremendous resilience and ability to adopt by rural and poor people as well.

There was a time when getting a phone connection meant waiting for 7 to 8 years. Within the introduction of certain policy changes I saw within one year almost every nook and corner of the country (where there is electricity) had a ISD calling places staffed by a person. They even gave the bill in real time and seeing that in one of the most backward village in South India was really a surprise.

In my last trip I saw so many holding a smart phone in ordinary trains and I was amazed at the adoption.

There are legitimate and major execution issues and bank people are working hard. This too shall pass.
But pessimists will always be there in the country - sometimes they need to be answered and sometimes ignored .
But the media people lack integrity and hence news sources cannot be trusted. Best is to ignore them

I would like to share the following message received through Face Book:

Today I went to my Bank at 12 noon...No crowds for depositing old notes...Just 3 persons were standing in queue..How about ATM? It is still a scene of shortage..It seems the delivery van comes at 3 AM & by 5 AM the ATM is emptied...I asked the Bank when will the next delivery van come...He replied at 3 PM...Long wait!! ATM's should be replenished more often!!
