AB Rh positive:Universal recipient

[FONT=comic sans ms,sans-serif]# 65. Pamphlet.
Pamphilus in Greek means "loved by all".
A Latin poem called Pamphilus proved to be so popular in the 12th century that numerous copies were produced. The thin paper covered books were later called as Pamphilets and later shortened to pamphlets.

# 66. Pedigree.
French 'pied de grue' means 'foot of a crane'
The arrow shaped marks lining the generations on a genealogical table look rather like the foot prints of a bird. So the pied de grue later modified to pedigree denotes the Genealogical table or ancestral line of man or animal.

[FONT=comic sans ms,sans-serif]# 67.Perfume.
Latin word 'per' means 'through'. 'Fume' is smoke.
At one time this name was given to the disinfectants.
Fumigate is related to this word.
Romans coined this word to describe the smell or scent drifting through the air like smoke.

[FONT=comic sans ms,sans-serif]# 68.Quarantine
Sick people are isolated from the others to control the spread of some contagious diseases.Originally quarantine meant being shut away for forty days. Latin Quarantine means forty. It was believed that during the period of forty days, the people who had been exposed to the disease were either completely cured or were no longer contagious.

# 69. Quiz.

In 1780, a theater manager in Dublin had laid a bet that he could introduce a new word English within 24 hours.

He spent the entire night in chalking the word QUIZ on the walls throughout the city.

Next day the new word was on every one's lips but no one really knew what the word meant!

So the word acquired the meaning of a puzzle.
Now quiz denoted a set of puzzling questions.

# 70. Robot.

Czech word for a slave is 'robotnik'. This was shortened to 'robot' by a Czech dramatist Karel Capek and used in his play about mechanical men.

This play was called R.V.R. Rossum's Universal Robots.
In 1923, this was translated to English. The word Robot became a part of the English language.

#. 71. SCHOOL.

School has become a nightmare to many children with Classwork, Homework, theory, practicals, projects, record work, tests and exams .

Yet the origin of School will surprise most of us.
The Greek word 'Schole' meant leisure.

The Greeks thought that learning was a purely leisure time activity filled with pleasure!

Dear VR Ji,

I read another version before which stated that the word School has its origins from the Sanskrit word Rishikul.

Yes, I think word school has origins in India. "GuruKUL" was very popular. KUL perhaps came from "Kulam" in Tamil, meaning CLASS.

I am a strong believer of a theory that everything started in Tamil! :)

I think ROBOT came from ROOPA, which means "Personification/ shapeling/ look alike". And of course ROOPA came from Roopam /Swaroopam etc and must have originated in Tamil!

KUL is sanskrit isnt it?

Sanskrit must have lifted it from Tamil!

Really. Lets debate which came first.

The origin of sounds/languages... were simple sounds, phonetics, "ah uh eh" type of gestures. And then they crystallized to form more formal languages.

Languages are always less complicated to begin with. They had lesser characters, words, simple writing methods. As time progressed languages evolved and became more complex to accommodate more communication tricks.

Sanskrit is much more complicated than Tamil. Both in characters, grammar rules and usage. Clearly, simplicity shows that Tamil pre-dates Sanskrit. All other languages evolved from there.

Oh wait, there is only one language that DEvolved from its parent origin with time. English.

Dear Dr Barani,

Ok this is really fun cos its like the chicken and egg debate.Nice one.
BTW Doc,I happen to read a post where you mentioned that we humans evolved from different monkeys. So how did we evolve from speaking "Monkey" to Human Languages?

Doc dont get me wrong I am not being sarcastic cos many tell me the same thing that Tamil pre dates Sanskrit.

Can you start off? Or may be we wait for madam VR to come tomorow and decide if we want to debate it here or in a new thread.

I am not very sure that we are "evolved" from monkeys even though we dropped the tail!

Genetically speaking, yes, we are supposed to have evolved from monkeys. But there is no reason why we should have evolved from the same monkey family, given that there are dozens of species - Apes, Orangutans, baboons, chimpanzees, rhesus... -

There are roses of different colour - white, red, pink, yellow....- and what if some plants descend from each of them?

Languages evolved from basic sounds over the thousands of years. I believe it must have required a fine-tuning of neural networks in the brain to accept signals and store them.

Sure, we can discuss these issues over the course of time, may be in another thread too. I appreciate it.

Dear Doctors,

You are welcome to discuss about Tamil and Sanskrit.:welcome:

I am all eyes and ears to watch the debate :ear:

between two well matched intellectuals! :nerds:

I am sure all the others are also equally interested

to watch the proceedings :)

with warm regards,
Mrs. V.R.

When I was compiling the words borrowed by Tamil from

different languages, I thought of including the Sanskrit words

also.

But the list was appalling! Almost all the words have been

borrowed from Sanskrit as it is, or with minor changes in

pronunciation and script since we have only one alphabet for

each varga unlike the other Indian languages which have 4

alphabets for each varga ka, cha, ta, tha and pa.

So Sanskrit must have been the ancient language and all the

other Indian languages must have emerged from it - since we

find Sanskrit words in most Indian languages.

Language Pundits and authorities are welcome to enlighten all

of us!

I sorta take the opposite view, since languages are primitive to begin with and become more complex with time. Therefore, Tamil came first, Sanskrit followed.

With regards to Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, all of them were the same as Tamil at first, then became dialects of one language, and slowly crystallized into their own languages.

IMHO!
